Keepin SEIII alive

Just came across whis website:
http://www.bettafoods.com/space_empires_iii_central.htm

I had no idea the SEIII community was still active. I'm impressed. Does anyone know the person who runs this site? Is anyone here still active in SEIII? We could use some SEIII wizards for the Wiki...

Note also SEIII conversions for the Drushockan and Ukratal shipsets =-)

Fyron October 28th, 2005 12:59 PM

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

There are two of them, BlueOrionTiger and AdmiralMartin. They are moderately active over on SEnet.

Oh, and on IRC. Can't forget that. AdmiralMartin is on IRC right now.

So cool!! And I've still got SEIII fully installed on one of my older computers! Getting the urge to break that out again.

Though I probably shouldn't as it would really take away from my SW SF work. Thanks a lot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Ahh, so many fond memories from SEIII. Still play once in a while, the AI's can sure give you a run for your money if they're on team mode! Good times.

Because, even though it's old it's still a good game?

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

why

Because some ppl would rather play a shareware game than shell out hard cash for SE4?

Because there are some ways in which SEIII is arguably better than seIV? (construction queues spring to mind)

Because it make a nice change from se4 every now and again?

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

IIRC, some guys found a cheat that was never addressed by MM. That sort of killed of the PBEM comunity.

But it was a nice game. 1v1's could be over in an hour. And ship sets were easy to make.

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

I fully own SE4 and Starfury, and will be buying SE5 when it comes out, No insult to Malfador here at all, but I really can not be bothered or want to pay $25 for SE3, is there anyway to get it full version for free so I can try a few games?

Fyron October 28th, 2005 07:48 PM

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

Only by purchasing it. The shareware has no turn limits, just tech limits and no modding.

wilhil October 28th, 2005 08:07 PM

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

wow, I like the research in this game, from screenshots, I am guessing it is like this in SE5, also, it is weird having thegalaxy map larger than the sector map!

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

ahh, cant get my head around it, and not enough time to learn. I built some colony ships, figured out how to move them, then after one move, life support and crew quaters became damaged http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif im confused, and I quit!

I say let it die.

Fyron October 28th, 2005 09:20 PM

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

You have to let them be built. Ships start with all components "damaged" in SE3. They do not take many turns to appear as they do in SE4. Build time depends on number of components rather than cost.

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

I believe that would be me.

I'm Blueoriontiger, administrator of Olympus Champion Shipyards. Sorry it took me a couple of weeks to get here and registered, but I was held up with pending projects.

A lot of people are still interested in Space Empires III, but I made my site after I see sites slowly blinking off into oblivion, and whatever site exists have not been updated in over 5 years! I decided to rescue whatever shipsets I could, record their authors, and post them on my site, which I would continually update, make better, add more shipsets, and make sure that it wouldn't disappear, providing whatever remained of the SE3 community with a valuable resource.

I update the site about once or more a week, and now I have made an SE3 forum, Olympus Champion Forums at Invisionfree. Almost anything imaginable about Space Empires III could be discussed there, including concepts about shipsets and such.

Yes, I have SE3 conversions of all the stock SE4 races. I haven't had a chance to post them all yet, but they're there, and was made from help from Fyron, so that I could have a cool SE4 shipset before I got SE4. I have done that to several other races also from SE4 players, namely my biggest contributor, ISACommand. Kevin likes what I've done with them.

Enough said, Space Empires III is a great game. I'm probably the only one actively trying to keep it alive. The title is our site slogan and motto, Keepin' SE3 Alive.

AdmiralMartin helps me moderate Olympus Champion's site and forum, and makes changes when I'm unable to do so. He's a great partner, and have done some great SE3 co-op games against the computer.

I'd be happy to archive a copy of all the SE3 files and mods on my server as a backup in case something happens.

Fyron probably would too.

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

How the heck can I get a copy of SEIII? I see no point in caring if it stays alive if I can't even play it.

douglas November 29th, 2005 11:12 PM

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

The shareware version of SEIII can be downloaded directly from malfador.com. Getting a registration code costs $25 and can be ordered here or through a number of other options listed on the SE3 section of the Malfador site.

Nice to see new faces around here. Welcome to the forum, Blue.

Oh, hey. I notice you've got an SE4 section on there.

You could add my SE3-ism mod for SE4 to it.

SE3 sets were trivial to make. Even little 'ole me made several. SE4 sets, on the other hand, require quite a bit of talent.

There are a number of copies.

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

Ok, I haven't played much if any SE3, but from my observations the shipsets are basically the same as the mini's from se4. (the overhead view ones) Am I right? if so then it should be simple enough to make a SE3 version of all the se4 shipsets. The art is already done, the mini pics might need a bit of resizing is all.

Ok, now who's gonna take on that project?

Nuf said, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

Yeah, cheese.

AdmiralMartin has Mods for SE4, so he put a section on e the site. Why not? Offer stuff for the next generation, too.

You're right, David. As for ALL the stock SE4 shipsets, I've done all of them. Not all of them are posted, but they're done. I've taken on the job of doing other SE4 shipsets that players have made. I love anything Space Empires III related.

AdmiralMartin December 1st, 2005 02:26 PM

Re: Keepin SEIII alive

Yeah, Olympus has an SE4 section. I am currently working on a sister site that will focus on SE4, the original Olympus Champion will stay the same though. SJ we would love to add your MOD. The link doesn't work though.

Works now, I'll add it ASAP. Earlier it was giving me a "Page cannot be displayed" error.

Feel free to SEIII-ify my sets (vikings, valkyries, KanesS) if you like. Please mention where they came from though, and send me a copy so I can put them on my site and the wiki.

Here is a template for SE3 shipsets:
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr...9-Template.bmp

Notes:
- The top right corner is the tiny-flag, and should be a zoomed down version of the big Flag.
- The bottom right corner is filled with your race colour. This is used for shield effects, direct-fire weapon effects, the colony population bars, the galaxy map presence circles, and so on.
- The LT, MT, HT are transports. Light medium and heavy, just in case you don't recognize those.
- This file is all you need and all you get. Name it STYLE###.bmp when done.

Everything else should be easy for SE4 players to match up.
