In need for a few beta testers!
I am building an events files that has a larger number of new events. I would like a couple of people to help me test some of them. If you are interested let me know.

Just some things different from the normal star destroyed, planet destroyed. Some events that increase pop, etc. And some more neg events. It just that it takes forever to get the game to do events even at the highest settings. so it is a little hard to test each one by my self.

How do you test it right now? I would suggest the following:
-2 human players only -large galaxy (so theres more stuff to get hit by random events) if thats the way it works, otherwise use small -all ministers on except politics -make a partnership treaty on first contact -do not choose x years of peace as victory condition. -For the first few tests, artificially inflate the likelyhood of your new events so they happen almost every turn Then, you can just flip through turns, and scroll through the log for each player. |

I have already tried all these things.
Even if you change the events occurance to 100 it does not occur every turn. I have ran 30 turns with no events occuring. I am at a lost on figuring out how to test these events . |

If 100=10%, the probability of going 30 turns without an event is still over 4%.

Most likely but the you change the number to let's say 101, the game error with a can't load file. so there is no way to that I can find to do quick tests on event files.

I assume you changed the "Event Percent Chance Low/Medium/High" settings in Settings.txt. You might want to change all 3 to be 100%, just to cover yourself on game setup (i.e., forget to change event probability). BTW, since the default values are 5, 10 and 25 respectively, either the numbers are in tenths of a percent (unlikely, given the error message you encountered) or the game only checks for events at certain times (say, once per 10 turns). Otherwise, events would already be happening at a pretty fast rate.

I have changed all the setting to 100 still no luck.
Dev, I will have it completed asap and will post a copy for you to help me test. I have a couple more idea's I want to add. May have to remove some, if they don't work once they are tested. |

Another thought on event chances: as noted, the game uses ALL planets, warp points, stars, etc. as possible event locations. However, it's possible that the game doesn't allow multiple events per turn. Therefore, as soon as an event and a location have been chosen, no further checking for events occurs. Then, unless an event location coincides with a player's system, no event is logged; and, more importantly, the effects may not be applied either. So, for testing purposes, it may be better to use a VERY small galaxy (like, say 10-20 systems); use 10-planet startup, 2 (human) players, form a partnership, and colonize each system. Then just wait for events to happen...
EDIT: by "player's system" I mean any system where the player has an actual presence; the "ancient race" trait wouldn't help. [This message has been edited by DirectorTsaarx (edited 12 April 2001).] |

I've modified my event file also with a bunch of stuff. Things like galatic olympics, glac elves taking supplies, and mooserat hunting. I haven't seen them yet work too. Even made graphics. I'll post mine later. Maybe we could compair/contrast?

sure we can do that and maybe once we get them to work, we can put them all together as an events mod. One of mine is a pleasure ship event. I would love to see it work. |

This is great stuff, it really adds charactr to your empire - I love anything that helps me to believe that my empire is a real society with cities, people, culture, lives... ------------------ There is an exception to every rule. I'll post my event file with pictures tonight. I just need to zip this up. Is there any way to get a derelict space craft in there? For instance you find a ship with a certain technology bonus.

I don't see a way for a derelict ship but there might be a way for a you to have a derelict planet show up with technology.
There is a planet - created event (alas no example of how to use in the file). You might be able to choose the type of planet and create a new planet that has a higher chance of ruins. A lot of ifs in this one. Also I have never seen a stellar manip created planet start with ruins so creating planets may go thru a different process then when the galaxy is made. You can have a 'derelict ship' found on a planet when the map is generated that can be found with colonizing (just a ruin of a different name) |

Not at this time, We are limited to the types at the top of the file.

This file has five of the 20 or so new events that I have written. I have set them all to low and 1 or 2 turns. If they work, then that will let me know that the other most likely will to. They are the Last 5 in the list of the events file. The others are the orginal ones that came with the game.
I will add more to the Messages once I know that they work. Please try them and let me know. Each of these are good events. I stuck with the picture files that came with the game as to make this file workable with everyone's game. [This message has been edited by Dracus (edited 13 April 2001).] |

I think I figured it out. at 100 for settings. The event will occur every 5-10 turns. but only if there is not another event pending. So lets say an event that take 15 turns is active. No other event will occur until that event is complete. I set all my events to 1 turn and in 60 turns I saw my pleasure ship event occur 8 times and my birth event occur 1 time. I still have not seen the planet create event occur yet. This maybe because those type of events can only occur of you allow high or cat type events. I will test this. |

I really liked the games and computer virus. I added these to my test events file. I gave you credit at the top of my file. Here is my beta verion 1.02 for testing. These are set at the levels that I would like to use them at. They have been added to the bottom of the orginal events file. Please try them and any feed back will be quite helpful. Thanks Dracus All these use the orginal pictures that come with the game and will work with any mod pack. load into your data file before starting a new game. |

This is all very interesting; but I am curious how the "lucky" racial trait fits into all of this. If there are "good" events, then it isn't so "lucky" anymore to miss out on half the random events, is it?

Since the events in a normal game do not happen that often. Any gain That a planet/empire recieves is not going to give them any real edge over the ones that use the lucky trait and besides they are also at a higher risk of a bad event occuring then those with lucky trait. Plus I am adding a few new bad events also. it will be like a 60/40 or a 70/30 in favor of a bad event happening.
I honestly don't think that this will hurt the advantage of using the lucky trait in any way. |

Ok here is the newest beta Version.
there are 19 new events in this file. Few are good and a few are bad. My attempt is to give a feel to the population in the game. Please read over them and tell me what you think. Try them out and let me know if there is a problem. Just load into your data file. As with all my mod files, I only add to what came with the game This file works with the mod pack and the star trek mod. |

I've got it installed into the mod I'm using... yet to get any new ones, but I'll let you know. If I like it, I might perm. add to my mod giving you the credit if that's ok with you...

Well I had the pleasure ship pull up twice (although both planets were already jubiliant)... Also "scientist improved resource management" happened once.
Also 2 cosmic storms(conditions)/1 meteor(facs)/1 eathquake(pop.)/2 lvl.1 plagues/1 firestorm/1 planet deystroyed Occured in an ancient galaxy, with 6% chance of events, while running only one empire... I only controled 8 systems out of about 50. Played about 1750 turns. Well I hope that helps... [This message has been edited by Trachmyr (edited 18 April 2001).] |

One question did the resource management increase the resources for the planet and can you remember by how much? |

"Supposedly" it increased planet value... but to be honest I do not know how much (but I know it did, as It had Radioactives at 151%, and no planet started higher than 150%... I normally put refining colonies on planets with 135% or greater)

It might of... 20 is deffinatly in the possible range now that I come to think of it, I was short on rads and was colonizing any planet in the 130's range as refining (131+20=151).

Since I have not seen any bugs and everything so far appears to be working fine. I will set up and release the full set of events for your gaming enjoyment.
