Well, congrats, lowly First Lieutenant. I plan to retire roughly when I reach the next grade myself: retirement benefits for Generals are a lot better, or so I heard.

Exactly my thought... Forums with this shown tend to have a great deal of fluff but little meat. Why, we even have threads dedicated to running up your post count. Sheesh.

And while this may seem inherently bad, it is vital to the survival of an online forum. Forums feed on teh post count numbers and so therefore, the more post counts the healthier and stronger the forum. Post padding threads are really started by the forum in an effort to sustain itself.

Post counts are by no means necessary for forum sustainability. It is posting that matters, not counting the posts.

Htere really is no reason to argue the point...unless... of course... you are the physical entity of the forum, carrying out it's whims and wishes!!! That is why you must be arguing back, to keep the fresh posts coming to feed the forum!

I always felt it was the content of the posts. For example, some people get high post counts by 'debating' in the form of endlessly restating their viewpoint. In my opion that is slightly better than inane posts, but still a boring read. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/yawn.gif

I post padded a time or two as a newbie trying to find out at what levels the ranks change. The result of that was a thread very much like this one. There's a list of those values somewhere. The novelty of it wore off long ago.

Everyone is here for a different reason. Those who take sides on any issue should take that into account. Veterans who long for the good-old-days can be happy that this forum is still here, and those of us newer to the game are happy to have found it. Some are here for the camaraderie with like-minded individuals, some strictly for the wealth of information contained herein, others to teach, and still more just because they feel they should support this marvelous game that has brought us all together.

We have a good forum and a good community, whether we agree with each other's positions or not, and that is what's important. It's like family. Sometimes you just smile and nod and look the other way.
