New PBW game: SPIN CYCLE
 
Consider a typical grid map.
Now, connect the top and bottom edges, as well as the left and right edges. You now have a type of Spherical map, in which there is no boundary, and you can keep travelling in one direction forever, eventually reaching your starting point from the opposite direction.

Now, consider what would happen if all the warppoints leading westward and northward were collapsed, leaving only one-way warppoints directed south and east.

Enemies to the northwest will be able to attack you at will, and you will not be able to counterattack. Any losses you sustain must instead be recovered by taking your southeastern neighbour's territory, and your empire will slowly rotate in a south-easternly direction.


Will you be able to keep up with the whirling merry-go-round of violence?
Can you handle the dizzying geometry of rotating territory?
Which race will come out of this cosmic spin cycle squeaky-clean, and which ones will be relegated to the dustbin of history?

Nice idea for the map!

Keep the map around - others might want to use it later (particularly with a mod; at least PvK Balance Mod).

I might join if I wasn't too busy with other stuff.

One interesting ramification of all the one-way warp points is that you will have no indication of where the warp points inbound to your territory come out until something comes through them, at which point it could be too late to even try blockading the sector.

I once tried making a map that looked like snakes and ladders without the snakes, but the AI couldn't handle it.

The 'closed universe' is a good idea. Making it all connect with ONE WAY warp points is not.

You might want to disable stellar manipulation. Otherwise, the map features will be ended once WP openers and closers come about, which doesn't take all that long in stock.

Only glitch for me is I leave next Tuesday (22nd) in the morning for Ohio to visit my family over the Thanksgiving holiday and arrive back home on Saturday (26th). If the game can't be paused for me during that time, then go ahead and boot me (rather than me miss crucial beginning turns and lousing the game up).

If it's anwhere in the western third of the state you should be heading right up 75, which goes right by me. If you are going to Columbus or Cleveland though you will probably veer off at Cincinatti and miss me by a far piece though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

8 sounds interesting. And I'll assume the game can be paused while I'm away for 4 days since you approved my entry. Who knows, depending on execution times, waiting on me might not cause the game to be too delayed.

Very interesting concept, but maybe you could use AT's Expanded mod (is stock but slightly more)

PBW isn't loading for me, but I'll check it out when I can.

You might try re-downloading the turn when PBW comes back, in case that was the trouble.

Yeah, I tried that (files unzipped the same). Tried rebooting...no go. Tried with the Launcher and straight from the SE4.EXE file...no go. Last time I looked, no turns were uploaded so wondering if it might be systemic to the whole turn (instead of just me).

Well, it seems congratulations are in order for Khyron of the RDF.

Carefully balancing a stalwart defense and a strong offence, he has emerged victorious in this game after 130 turns!

It was a very unique game. Not being able to pull back into your own space made for some interesting choices. I was moping up the Claw Beast empire and sent a large fleet unknown into Skynky's space. Normally I would have backed up, but my only choices were to attack or move through 8-10 systems to get back where I started.

At the end Slynky was by far my biggest worry. I got lucky and defended against his counter attacks into my space only with very disproportionate losses. If I didn't have 2-1 or better odds I wouldn't consider fighting an option.

Great game everyone.
