No bragging about beta, or we drop your computer from a height.

Just thought I'd let you all know, I've been cleared by Aaron and SF's Marketing Department to let you know that the official, set-in-stone, will-be-out-no-matter-what, shipping date of Space Empires 5 is.....

Well, that's a relief, considering all the unfinished, patched-on-release-day games lately.

agreed I'd rather have games done rather than done 80% and declared done by marketing. then you hear about all the sutff that had to go at the last moment and all the bugs and then you curse.

*groan* Oh noes! SEIV beta started way back in ... well, I can't quite remember. I know the planning started around 1998, beta I think was sometime late 1999 or 2000... and we're STILL getting patches to it, at the end of 2005!

We're not gonna get it until 2010! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/skull.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/skull.gif

(Ok, ok, so there was Dungeon Odyssey and Starfury in between... but still)

Re: ETA for SE5?

Starfury was just making the engine for se5 and

Dungeon Odyssey was just WTF.
Ragnarok from 1992 is better, granted Ragnarok beats just about every other modern RPG also...

Final Fantasy Tactics for the playstation was my favorite, but I grew up with the Dragon Warrior series for the NES. My 4 year old was playing the original the other day,She wasn't doing too bad for not being able to read yet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Might and Magic VI I thought was a good game. I play adom at work every once in a while, but I was never a big fan of "die and start from the begining" type. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter had an interesting save system though, but I haven't gone far into that game yet. I'll have to give Ragnarok a try, I'm always up for a new RPG, there just arent enough good ones out there.

Anyone here play Guildwars?

Wolfman77 November 29th, 2005 04:15 PM

Re: ETA for SE5?

I never got into the online games, partly because I don't have the money for the montly fees, and partly because I don't have internet at home. At the time I looked into it I couldn't see paying 20-30 dollars each month for the little time I had to play. I did play a free demo of something along the lines of an MMORPG, It was aimed more a kids though. a free trial aimed at kids meant there were alot of people running around not knowing what they were supposed to do. I wouldn't mind trying out something like Guildwars, but for now I'm stuck with single player RPG's

Fyron November 29th, 2005 04:29 PM

Re: ETA for SE5?

Guild Wars has no monthly fee. You still have to pay for Internet though, which might run around $20 a month for low end DSL from SBC (they have special deals all the time) or similar.

Wolfman77 November 29th, 2005 04:38 PM

Re: ETA for SE5?

Thats not so bad. It's been a few years since I had internet at home. I gave up when I couldn't find a reliable SP that wouldn't try to shaft me. My current comp isn't worth fixing for internet though. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Re: ETA for SE5?

Wolfman77: You can get around Adoms' total death syndrome by simply copying the savegame into a backup folder.

But in my opinion, this does take away something from the experience. (Doesn't mean I don't do it, though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif )

Wolfman77 November 30th, 2005 12:05 PM

Re: ETA for SE5?

Thought about that. You are probably right about it taking away from the experience, but after spending 15 minutes creating a character, then dieing the first battle. I did that three times trying to figure out the game. Then the next five times I died in the first dungeon, a couple times from starving. Man thats annoying.
I always liked being able to do stuff as slow as I wanted and not being a slave to a timer, but I also don't like to lose something I spent a long time working to build. I realy like the weapon system in the game, and I think I like the magic system, haven't played long enough to see that though. Maybe If I can learn the game a little better I won't need the backups.

narf poit chez BOOM November 30th, 2005 05:44 PM

Re: ETA for SE5?

Well, that's a perfectly good reason to backup.

Spoiler space in case you don't want some tips.

Tips: Bats, rats, wolves, dogs - As long as the're not rabid, eat the carcass. Doesn't matter if your character isn't hungry.

Doors: Leave the locked ones for last. Then, always kick them from a diagonal, if you can. Some traps only hit the square in front of the door. Won't keep you perfectly safe, but it'll help.

Worms: Unless you want to farm some XP and weapon skills, kill them the instant you see them. They replicate.

Alignment: Don't attack non-hostiles; it moves your alignment towards E.

Scrolls of Identify, Potions of Bless: Use the potion on the scroll. Presto, it now identifies everything in your inventory.

And that's all I can think of now.

Re: ETA for SE5?

Thanks for the tips. The food issue is hard for me to get used to. The Doors tip is a good one for almost any RPG, at least the ones I've played. Good to know about worms, I'm sure I will farm some from them at some point. I didn't know about the non hostile alignment change, but it makes sense now that you mention it. Is the scroll potion combo a one time use?

narf poit chez BOOM December 1st, 2005 04:34 AM

Re: ETA for SE5?

Yep - Both scrolls and potions are one use each.

Also, carcasses that have an element name by them - Like Fire beetle or fire lizard tend to do stuff like give you the appropriate resistance. Basically, eat (Almost) anything non-sentient. Some things have negative effects; a good indicator is common sense. Oozes, for example. Common sense says don't eat.

Some of the people in the village will give you quests; the village fool has a few usefull things to say - Explore options.
