OT: Which of these looks best?

So, which of these ships do you like best? Before you ask, I'm making them to be sorta like relatives of the Phong. Same general shapes, different configurations and coloring. Please, let me know which is best, what I can do to make them better!

Top Left. Looks like the ship's been used and not sitting in dock with the crew buffing and waxing it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Renegade13, what did you make them with? I'm curious because they DO resemble the Phong...

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif I made them in Bryce 5, definitely my favorite program for creating ship models. And you won't believe this, but I found the EXACT texture that was used for the Phong! In fact, the textures of the top-right and bottom left, plus a bunch of parts in the other two are that same texture, just recolored from the customary yellow to a red or green. The texture I'm almost sure was used for the Phong is called "Urban Dwelling" and its a stock texture that comes with Bryce 5.

Just wish I could convert .br5 to .x format...

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

The upper right one looks like a ship from a "dark", semi-evil race to me, not really the Phong but more of a weird Phong/EEE/Fazrah combination with a little bit of "chaotic evil" thrown into the mix.

The lower right one reminds me of the Xi'Chung, probably because of the nose. It seems to me like a ship from a race that has trouble trying to shed their reputation as "evil" beings.

The upper right one looks the most Phong to me, but the red..... well, I dunno about that. I like it, don't get me wrong, but the red kinda detracts from the feeling that these guys are akin to the Phong.

The lower left one looks to me like an upper right one with extensive combat damage.

Personall, I think the one in the upper left-hand corner looks the best.

They are all good. But the bottom right is the best. I like the mix of red and green.

Upper right catches my eye the most.

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

OK, I've counted up all the votes thus far. When people said they liked two or more, I just divided the vote (.5 for two, .25 each for all four if all four were liked http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif ). The results are:

Top Left: 2.5
Top Right: 4
Lower Left: 1.5
Lower Right: 5

So it's a close race between Top Right and Bottom Right. Lower left is pretty much out (it was my least favorite as well).

Maybe I'll just have to create a couple variations. Keep an eye out for some more models which will come as I have time to work on them! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Maybe later I'll have some sort of a competition where people can suggest names for the finished set, with the best one chosen by vote or by me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif . Might be a little while before the set is done though.

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

I was in a mood this evening to create some ships for this set, so I sat down for an hour and a half and made 13 ships, just over a quarter of what I need. After that many I kinda ran out of creativity so I'll have to wait a bit. But in the meantime, I finished all ships from Scout up to Heavy Dreadnought. Below are the models of the Heavy Destroyer, Battlecruiser and the Dreadnought.

Please let me know your honest and full opinion of these ships. Don't sugar-coat anything, I can take it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Any criticisms (as long as they're constructive) are most welcome, or just feel free to say what's on your mind.

I've tried to keep these ships somewhat simple in form, sort of like the Phong they resemble. Thus the heavy usage of circular shapes, stretched and distorted somewhat. Actually, I think a circle is the only basic shape I've used to create these ships!

Anyways, enough of me babbling, here's the ships!

Pretty ships, in an ugly sort of way.

Looks nice, maybe a bit dark. What do they look like with a bit more light?

I like them all, tended to favor the lower-right version of the original image, and agree it might be good to shed a little more light on them.

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

Could you do a test with your last batch of nice ship designs?.. Change the red to yellow? Post a sample, I think a green and yellow color scheme would look better than the red and green. mind you red and green are christmas colors and tis the season and all that.

btw isn't bryce a wonderful program?

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I'm afraid I have no idea what this means http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

PVK, Wolfman77, I'll try messing around with the lighting and re-rendering. Although I'm not sure if I can actually get the lighting to be good, so they may stay as is, except color. See below.

DEG, I actually hadn't thought of the red/green color scheme as being holiday colors. Subliminally snuck through it seems! Anyways, I think I'll try out the yellow instead of the red and post a couple of before/afters in a bit. Probably later tonight.

And yep, I love Bryce http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Esp. the UI, it's simple and easy to learn, yet powerful.

Come on, somebody bash my work, it's eerie to have no one say anything bad (yet)! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Well, the're well-made and the texture is very good, but they look like brutal warships, which is probably what the're supposed to be.

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

I think by making the red/green areas yellow, you make them look too much like the Phong ships.

Re: OT: Which of these looks best?

Ah, I see what you mean now Narf. Thanks! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Kwok, you're right. The yellow made them too similar to the Phong, and actually clashed a bit with the green. It was...not the effect I wanted, so I'll stick with the existing colors.
