Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Mine hates it.
'Course, she hates all computer games. |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
My mother plays, but she's still afraid to post. Although not particularly interested in playing all the time, my g/f is more than happy to play. Especially as it runs on my laptop and can be brought on trips. Along with RuneSword, WDK2K and Nox, we can fill all of our travel times.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Funny you should mention that, my girlfriend hates the game as well. She also hates this forum. She has a no SE4/game forum rule whenever she comes over http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
This game just gives my wife something else to bug me about. (she hates anything about aliens.)

AAAAahhhhhhhhhhahahahaahahahahahahah Ya riiiigggggghhhhhhtttttt.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
My wife hates this game too. She also hates Babylon 5, which is how (oddly enough) I got hooked on this game.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
My gf doesn't understand the entire concept of gaming. She can't see how "violence" in any form could be entertaining, and is baffled about why anyone would find roleplaying games "fun".

Man, I don't think I have ever met one living soul that did not at least UNDERSTAND that concept. its just too ingrained in human nature not to understand. like or dislike as you will, its a pretty hard concept not to grasp. I think I recall Heinlein writing (and correctly so, as far as I can figure) that laughter and humor are invariably based on situations derived from the suffering of others. which is why "non sum-zero" methods of entertainment are rare to non-existant. but that is a concept that would take f-ing forever to even explain, much less discuss. |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
My wife is into games like Age of Wonders, but not the space games. She says as long as I don't load a 'Space Empires Theme' onto the desktop she can deal with it...

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Ummmm,.......NO! Anything that takes up time away from her, NOT. Luckily I work nights, she works days and we spend time together on weekends. All weekdays from when I get up till 4pm are SE4 days http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.(course, she dosn't know I play that much, http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif ).

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
I don't even have ANY offline freinds that like SE, at all. I did get a few people to play se3 with me in college when it came out, but I havn't seen them in years...

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Same here - girlfriend hates it, don't know anyone offline who's into it. Unfortunately I live with my g/f and she get pretty annoyed that I have to play at least 1/2 hour a day to keep up with my PBEM games.
Wow... trying to imagine what it would be like if she played. She'd probably go into a three day sulk everytime I trashed one of her fleets. Anyone know any good games for "converting" computer- hating girlfriends? ------------------ There is an exception to every rule. Including this one. |

Especially since, by the time we get home from work, there's only about four hours we can spend together before it's time to get to bed so we can get up and go back to work in the morning. Weekends are somewhat better, but I still generally try to play SE4 only when she's asleep or running errands on her own. We've been playing Final Fantasy on the Playstation together, but SE4 involves too much micromanagement for my fiancee to want to play. |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Best way to convert is not to convert...
I sat down with my g/f and bluntly explained there are things I like to do as my hobbies. I would do these regardless of she feels like participating. If this ment we would not spend some time together, so be it. So far, of the list of 4 hobbies, she's accepted all four and participated actively in 3. She doesn't neccessarily like them, but she's willing to try. The only weekend this ever causes trouble on is our local gaming convention (CapCon at Ohio State University.) I run Clay-o-rama for about 36 hours, destroying my voice and spending a pretty penny. She _HATES_ this, but I have a bLast. |

But I also understand that she just like to sit with me and watch a movie or something so against my better gaming judgement, I watch the movie (secretly plotting my video game playing for later). http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif It can't be all one sided! ------------------ Regards, KiloOhm |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
The movies are not a problem unless it is a star trek movie or any movie with aliens (she hates star trek and can't stand that I like it.) She does like the movies about serial killers. ( that's why I have so much time to be on this forum. afraid to sleep.) She just does not like video games that much and does not understand why an adult my age would still find them fun.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
I've convinced my wife it's cheap entertainment, a few trips to the video arcade with the kids was all that was needed to get her to agree.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
My wife is very tolerant of my gaming habits for the 15 years we have known each other. Whether it was RP games I used to play or computer games now - She has put up with it since she was my g/f in High school, through our engagement, and now as my wife. She would rather see me here hanging out with a computer game - ready to be summoned back to work at a moments notice.... than at some meat market bar with all my friends that are prowling for girls.
She is into Video games so she understands my interest in a computer game more than she ever understood my interest in RP games. [This message has been edited by AJC (edited 12 April 2001).] |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
She says it look spretty boring - not as much as Stars!, though .. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
But she likes Boardgames, and spends ages playing "Anno 1602" and something like that, not to mention "Tomb Raider". And she really likes roleplaying games ... A. |

She always pokes fun at me by saying "Off to save another world?" as I head off to my computer. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif BUT... I can get her to play some computer games, just not the ones I like. I did get her addicted to the SIMS for a while and she did occasionally play Sim City 3000. She even got pretty far in Grim Fandago. Right now, I have her addicted to the internet. I set her up with her own computer and she spends lots of time in certain forum's she likes. She also does plenty of e-mailing. I just think women in general do not like same kind of games men do. While I can enjoy an occasional game of The Sims or Sim City, it's not my cup of tea. The same goes with my games for her. ------------------ Regards, KiloOhm |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
My HUSBAND does not appreciate SEIV at all. Nor does he appreciate any of the other games I enjoy, which happen to (pretty much) all be strategy and RPG's. However, I do not appreciate his flight sims, either. Complex, machine hogging, flight stick requiring flight sims (and related games, like ATC sims). Happily our dual income, no kids life style gives us time for both :-)

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
I'm not alone. It's incredible how everyone's description is so similiar to mine. I too have to sometimes plot a secret time to play...but I usually play while my wife is at work if I can.
Sometimes my wife will let me play and then after a hour, she's like "Are you getting off yet?" - I only get like 6 turns in! [This message has been edited by capt_spoogy (edited 13 April 2001).] |

HAhahaha...thanks for the much-needed laugh at work, Dracus. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif I'm currently in an LD relationship, so I can still get away with it. Although with school and work lately, I rarely have time for too much besides a quickie FPS. Funny about the offline friends comment, though...only one of my friends is into SEIV. Is it just me, or is SEIV mostly a web-based/word-of-mouth/fan of previous SEs thing? Anyone here because of game reviews? zen |

Yep. I first heard about SEIV while browsing strategy reviews on GameSpot. |
Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
I guess I'm really lucky. I've gotten two friends into SE4 is a painful way (they are as bad as me now). As for the girlfriend issue, my fiance' only plays games with wanton carnage. She never wanted to try anything like Unreal Tournament, but I made her one time, and now she thinks Head-shot is the most wonderful sound in the world. Anything with more thought and strategy than Diablo II she'll pick up for an hour then never look at again. Go figure.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
I found SE4 by accident at a review site, can't remember which one although I should remember and thank them. I that whatever it was that told me to download the demo, as I usually don't do that.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Heard about the game via a magazine review... It may have been Electronic Gaming Monthly.
...My wife's idea of a complex strategy video game is Windows Solitare. Luckily she's okay with me playing games. She figures it's a good balance based on the fact that I spend zero time watching sports on TV. |

Well....That does it!! I'm NEVER getting married now! I love watching sports AND playing computer games. I heard about SEIV in Computer Gaming World and ordered it that day.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
I found out about SE4 from a stray link that came up in a Web search on a different topic; I don't remember what I actually looking for. ISTR the link went to a review, but I don't remember what site it was on, either.

Re: Does ANYONE\'s wife/girlfriend like SEIV?
Playing whil gf is at out / in the bath, thinking about games whil watching TV... lol - I do both of these.
Damn, we're snaky aren't we? Must be all those spare intel points. I actually found SEIII while sarching the web for freeware strategy games I could play at work - I was hoping for something a little less obvious so I didn't actually play it for ages. |
