OT-strange comp thing
I am wondering if anyone can explain this. Occasionally my computer has been rebooting itself. Now until recently I havn't had any troubles. Mostly it's while I am playing SW battlefront2. during play, or the last time at the end, the computer just reboots. The only other time I can think of was when I was looking at a webpage. It doesn't happen much, perhaps once every few days. The biggest change recently was when I installed sp2 during that spyware trouble I had.

I've heard bad things about service pack 2, although that was months ago.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
When I installed SP2 my computer no longer booted, so I have since reinstalled SP1 and all the critical updates. My system works like a charm. Aparently SP2 does not like some motherboards. I have an ECS Elitegroup K7S5A.
here ends my knowledge of SP2, good luck. Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: OT-strange comp thing
Well actually I had avoided installing SP2 cause some people mentioned trouble, but what with my infection the help websites said install SP2 or you're just wasting time. Anyhow I just thought of something. We had a new power point installed last week and I put the computer on that. It's not outside the realms of possibility it is faulty and has power glitches. Except if power gets cut the modem would switch off so I might be wrong.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
I have SP2 on my computer and the only thing I can say is that after you install it, you have to reconfigure your whole system. It will make ALL microsofty programs the default. Try disabling 'Messenger' and 'Outlook' in your "Set program access and defaults" on the "Start" menu bar. Make sure you check ALL the settings in the control panel for your power backup. Right click on 'my computer' and check all your hardware setting. Just look them all over and make sure that they have the current hardware listed that YOU have on your computer. AND last, check your bios settings! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif
Hope this helps. |
Re: OT-strange comp thing
I have(had) a (Windohs 2003 Server) computer at work recently that was rebooting randomly, but only after being on for a few days and then trying to do something with it. It started happening after adding some RAM, but otherwise it was a very fresh installation. The best guess is it was a heat problem in some component causing a failure and reboot.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
The problem has continued occasionally and I wondered if my computer was overheating. I looked inside the case (my friend put in a glass screen when he last upgraded it) and it has huge piles of dust. I guess it would make sense to have it cleaned. I guess next week I'll have it taken care of. It always seems to me problems pop up on fridays when I can't have it looked at the next day.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
Those rebooting issues are probably just blue screens of death. The newer windowses like to pretend it never happened and reboot instead. You should be able to turn off that "feature" in the control panel, so you can have a chance to figure out what it is crashing over.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
The last time I had "spontaneous rebooting" it was some faulty video driver installed with a game.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
Could be an overworked or dying power supply too. There's just so many things that could cause somewhat random rebooting.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
You can also see the error message that would have been displayed by the blue screen in the Event Viewer administrative tool. You can make these appear in the start menu in the task bar properties dialogue.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
Have you checked the fans inside the computer? Just the other day at work I had to replace a bad processor fan which was causing a computer to constantly shut itself off... good thing we figured it out in time before the processor burned out!

Re: OT-strange comp thing
The problem doesn't happen if I'm just using the internet or low powered stuff (well ok it did reboot once when I was looking at a website), mostly it's when I'm in the middle of Star Wars Battlefront 2, which makes me think it's a heat thing. Anyway I have another suspicion I'd like input on. After that spyware trouble I had a few weeks ago my computer has a whole lot of anti-spyware things. Stuff like my AV software, then Microsoft Anti spyware, then SPysubtract, you get the picture. I read somewhere that having more than 1 AV program means they conflict with each other, might that be it?. I'd like to fix the problem as I plan to play DDO when it comes out and I don't want to be dropped in the middle of a dungeon with everyone else.

Re: OT-strange comp thing
After a week free, it happened again. I looked at the event log but have no idea what to look for. It has a record of the check it does when the computer was restarted without preparation but nothing just before that to say why it went and restarted.
