Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
OK so my newer computer will no longer run SEIV in a playable manner. Thee is about a 3 second delay for everything that I do, if I move the mouse the cursor doesn't move for a few seconds, same with clicking buttons if I manage to get the cursor in the right spot. So I've given up on it untill I can aford a new one. Now I'm trying to load SEIV on my older comp with Windows 95. I used to have no problem with it a few years ago, but now I get an Esocket Error when I try to run it. tried both the gold version 1.60 from the disk and 1.94 patch. It is a fresh install of windows, and I put the network stuff on there even though I don't have it connected to anything, someone else had fixed a similar problem that way. Windows version is 4.00.950,
I have a couple of things I am going to try, but if anyone remembers having a problem like this and what they did to fix it, I would apreciate any help. |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
TCP/IP mode in Gold added checking for network sockets, which may not be present on your 95 machine. Install TCP/IP Internet protocol in LAN properties and maybe it will work?
On the new machine, try disabling ship animations. |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
Thanks I'll try that when I get home.
On my new machine, it does that even in the game setup screens. I've been having problems with it for the last two years, being windows XP there is no way to fix it that I know of since all my restore points disapeared. Even before that it was questionable. The paging file is gone so I have no virtual memory, changing the setting on that does nothing, literally, it resets itself to 0 as soon as I exit the screen. It's an HP, I've never liked it. I think the HD is dying. A few other problems that I can't remember. |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
This problem came up before, same issues, same solution. It should work.
As for that XP machine... backup your files to a second drive, format & reinstall. |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
I was hoping it was something simple like that.
As for XP I have nothing to reinstall from, I would have done that as soon as I bought it. They said the program was on a second partition of the drive, which explained why I have 32 Gb on a 40Gb drive, but I'll be darned if I know how to find it much less use it, if it's really even there. |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
Get a Knoppix live CD and see if it sees the multiple partitions?
|
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
I'll give it a shot. It will take me about a week to get it home though. I'm going with this one: KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso, there are 4 others that look like they go with it: .md5, .md5.asc, .sha1, and .sha1.asc. Do I need to put them on the same CD? Anything I'm missing?
SEIV works fine now on my old comp, so I can at least play that. Can get adamant through setup though, freezes on the race selection screen. could an issue with one of the races cause it to freeze without an error message? |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
Why use a special CD to check for multiple partitions? All you need to do is go into Disk Management.
Simple right-click on My Computer, go to Manage and then click on Disk Management in the left pane. It will show you all partitions found on the computer. Even if one of the partitions isn't formatted it will show up here, giving you an option to format. |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
I'll check it out tonight, I tried everything I could find on there, I'm sure I checked there, but it never hurts to look again. If it is there how would I go about accessing it?

Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
Ok I found something showing there are 2 partitions in the "system information" on my drive. One is just under 5Gb, the other is the 32Gb that is useable. But I still can't find any way to acces it. It doesn't list any drive letters there just disk#0, partition#0 and disk#0, partition#1. Will the knoppix CD let me reload windows from the hidden partiton onto driveC?

Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
The Knoppix CD should ignore whatever they did to make it not appear as a drive in Windows and mount the partition so you can view its contents. It generally puts drives as folders on the desktop (note that nothing is installed or changed on your PC by booting a live CD). I don't know if it would be possible to launch the installer from there though.
The computer manufacturer most likely provides instructions for how to install from that partition, assuming a full Windows installer was included. Maybe they stuck a readme on there? Who knows. Did they provide any sort of "system disk" or "emergency repair disk?" |
Re: Esocket error starting SEIV in windows 95?
None nothing, I called and asked about it and they said it didn't need one, that was what the system restore was for. I'll see what I can do when I get knoppix home, it'll take about a week to do that. If there is an installer on there I should be able to reformat the C: partition and reinstall windows from the other partition. Thanks again for all the help.
