Poll: what OS/platforms (besides Win32) for DomII

I assume Windows is by far the most-used platform, but what of the other platforms do you use for your DomII gaming? My computer at home runs Linux/PPC, and I am very glad this quality game supports my platform (not many do!). Speak up for the platform(s) you need to see supported.

Sill
(I realize this may show that nobody but me uses Linux/PPC and thereby Doom support in the future... oh well.)

I have a MAC at home on which I play Dominions.

Boy! Would I be sad if Dom III did not work on a Mac!!

Incase some haden't seen this. From a press release Oct 18, 2004.

Not Solaris? Dang, I wanted to buy a Sun before they went bankrupt http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Only Windows, but I know that it would be easier to run automated scripts on Linux. Gandalf Parker and his random maps are quite an example in that part... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Actually, we are in an age where triple-platform "scripting" tools (Mac/Win/Linux) are powerful and easily available. Many of them are free and/or open source.

My favorite is Python. Others include Java, REALBasic, and C#/Mono. With the cygwin Unix environment for Windows, one can add all the other usual favorites: Perl, Ruby, shell scripts, Tcl, PHP, and who knows how many others.

Not all those are "scripting" per se, but all could be used for writing and running small programs of this kind on all 3 platforms.

Don't worry, OpenSolaris is proceeding well. There is even a PPC version in the works http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

You may want to add XBasic to the list (at least for Linux and Windows, dunno if there's a Mac version)

And what do you need cygwin for? There are "native" version available for Windows.

And with Tcl/Tk you needn't worry about the GUI .. works the same on all OS. You can even wrap the app into an .exe, even cross-platform. (At least, that's what I read from the freewrap how-to. Haven't tried it, though. Might turn out trickier as advertised, as usual http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif )

well, I voted for Solaris, just because its cool having dominions support it - not that i've personally ever heard of anyone using it to play... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

You really do need to put a Windows option if you want most people to be able to respond.

You missed the point. It's what other OS do you use. Windows is the same as windows, so by conclusion it isn't other than windows. Therefore not a valid choice. I heard rumors that other OS'es are, in fact, used. Besides, such polls get boring quickly. See here:

I think that you missed the point. This poll is poorly designed unless you only are interested in the OS used by a small portion of the playerbase.

Re: Poll: what OS/platforms (besides Win32) for Do

Considering that word 'other' is used, I'd suspect it actually is designed to get information from 'small' portion of the playerbase. So your post is off-topic.

Just to jump in....
I use a Solaris?Sparc system and a Debian Linux for hosting and webside interfacing to games, and I usually use WinXp for the player/client side. I would be thrilled if Dom3 continued to support all of them. But apparently Illwinter has announced in a news article that Solaris will not be supported. However that only means they dont plan to create a solaris install and do solaris testing/debugging. It may still be possible to get it to work on one. Especially a Sun running something else other than solaris.

Im thrilled to see some Basics mentioned. I did my Dom1 stuff in BWBasic on the linux, and for all the stuff on my Dom2Minions site thru to the present I use YaBasic for linux scripting and CGI. Especially since its dual compatable to Windows and allows me to compile EXE's. I dont see any reason to switch for the Dom3 stuff.

And people with fond memories of my site. I have had Dom3Minions.com registered for nearly a year now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I checked the link. It doesn't tell you any useful information because I'm pretty sure I can remember that poll being posted as Slashdot, which means that you're going to get swamped with a much greater than normal amount of Linux users. After all, the market share for Macs is only around 5%, and the market share for the other *nixs is going to be much smaller.

On the other hand, there is the "fish factor" to consider. Big fish in small pond versus small fish in big pond. In the Mac market a game is a much bigger "fish" than in the windows market. And in the linux market, you are a freaking WHALE! Things are evening out but it is still true at this time that a new relase of a game that supports linux will get some great pr in national sites that is hard to achieve if it were only a windows game.
