Just bought SE2!!!
You know, I first found out about the SE series by downloading and playing to death the SE2 demo. Then I found the SEIII demo and played it to death, then bought it...but in my eagerness to play the full game, I bought only the registration codes, not the CD delivery option which would have included SE2 as well as SE3. Then I moved on to SEIV and so on...
But now I'm feeling a little nostalgic and decided to line Aaron's pocket with $35 of my hard earned dollars http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif SE2 should be coming soon!! |
Re: Just bought SE2!!!
Congradulations. I have never played it. I wish I had known about it back in the day as I am sure I would have bought it then.

Have fun!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I haven't played SEI or SE II either. A long time ago I downloaded the SEII demo and started it up just to see the intro and the menus but I never got around to playing a game. |
Re: Just bought SE2!!!
Where did you buy it?
|
Re: Just bought SE2!!!
tbh SEII is not my cup of tea. I did really love SEIII tho.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
Aaron was going to release the source for SE2 soon... but I bet he's glad to have a nostalgic fan actually order that old game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
I remember a long time ago my brother used to play it, and I played it a little but was to young to enjoy properly. WoW I wonder if I still have that game some where, it was great.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
I never got to play SE I. When I bought SE II, I was under the impression that SE I was never released, and never would be. It would be interesting to se how it all started, but I don't think I'll spend $35 to see it.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
SE1 was briefly available for free, I think around the time that SE4 first came out... I might have it lying about somewhere, or maybe Fyron does... Basically the universe was one huge grid of sectors (no systems or warp points! Though I think there were storms you could hide in), and all planets that were not homeworlds were occupied by primitive civilizations that you had to conquer before you could take the planet. You couldn't design ships, and I don't think you could research either, but instead you built ships with predefined combat strength. There was no AI, so you had to find someone else to play against. Pretty primitive, huh? Though I do like the "primitive civilizations on every planet" idea... hopefully we can mod that into SE5 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
Primitive can be a nice change of pace sometimes, though.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
SE1 was released for a while during the SE4 Beta test because people new to SE4 (at that time) wondered why there was only 3 SE titles. Aaron originally made the game for himself and his friend if I recall right, it wasn't ment to be a product of any kind. I have it somewhere still in my CD and DVD backups with the rest of my SE crap. It's a fun change of pace for a short hotseat game. Ed has it pretty much right, there was a few ships, a couple of bases. No design, fix amount of income generated based on your planets, no research, etc.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
The Space Empires series, which includes Space Empires 1-3, is on the compilation disk. It was available for purchase through a link on Malfador's web site, but I don't know if it's still there or not.
***Buyer Beware*** Even though they're old, SE2 and SE3 are still highly addictive games. In some ways they are superior to SE4. |
Re: Just bought SE2!!!
Space Empires I sounds a lot like 'Empire' in space - a game that I always wanted to create before I discovered Space Empires.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
I liked the way SEIII treated construction. It builds the ship and then fills it up with the components, the same way that a damaged ship is repaired. So you don't suddenly get a completed ship at the end of the construction. You can also have multiple ship yards on the same planet or same ship, and you can move construction items around from one ship yard to another using a special interface, even if they are partly made. It was a lot of fun when you have construction worlds with space yard bases or ships in orbit. You can shift those grey construction blocks around from space yard to space yard, tweaking and optimizing the construction sequence to take advantage of different build rates and timing the completion dates according to your plan.

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
Se3 hade a great construction system, I could shuffle ships and projects around so that I'd have the ships I need when I need them. I hope it returns.

If SE5 has everything se4 had and more, and a few extra possibilities for modding, then a true primitives mod could well be possible. There's a great thread about it all here: http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr...t=all&vc=1 yub yub! |
Re: Just bought SE2!!!
/me adds another entry to the "To Do" list for the EOGC Mod, post-release

Re: Just bought SE2!!!
I liked the building queues in SEIII too. I also kind of liked the way you could spread satellites around a warp point instead of having to dump them all in one stack.
I never played SEI or SEII. |
