Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) My favorite Feature is the "Quest" for the big D (sparked by finding the HoP), and I wish there were more quests like that in the game. My favorite Item is the whole category of "Artifacts," because experimenting to find out what they do is fun. For similar reasons, I also enjoy items that have a hidden function that isn't immediately apparent -- like the Lookout Frogs, the Toy Robot, the Mantle, etc.. It would be really cool if there were even more of these, too.
2) I very much liked being able to set those little "waypoints" in SAIS; so NOT being able to do that is my least favorite Feature of WW. I also really preferred the larger ship displays set to the side of the combat screen in SAIS, and I find the hover-displays in WW more than a little annoying. My least favorite Items are all the useless junk at the bottom of the scale: Explosive Shell Chaingun, Structural Gluon Shield, Pulse Detonation Thrusters, etc.. They may be necessary as starting items, but it really annoys me to find something that useless on a planet somewhere. Quite a few of the weaker weapons are totally pointless, too -- the Gatling Laser, the Electron Accelerator, etc. -- and I never use them for anything but trade fodder to buy something more worthwhile. I'd rather not find them at all, and just find bags of gold instead, since that's all they're good for. 3) Definitely the largest map. I play that almost exclusively. 4) I like (and play) all three ships, but obviously the big military Frigate is the show-stopper. 5) All of the bosses feel just about right, I think. They're all powerful enough to splatter you like a fly on their windshields -- but if you're well-armed and know what you're doing, you can take them. I particularly like the Kawangi in WW, because it is now possible to defeat him in combat -- which was damned near IMpossible in SAIS. 6) I'm not sure what the question means... but if "risky" means trying to tackle enemies without being confident of beating them, then NO, not really. I will take small groups of enemies as I come across them, but I save the tough groups for later -- after I've found every possible weapon, system, and ally on the map. If I find the Mirror, I'll even use it to acquire items from those tough groups before I fight them. 7) Not really, no... but perhaps I might, if there were more opportunities to feel like I was interacting with the game's other characters. (See my answer to #9.) 8) Yup! 9) I don't really feel like the characters are very noticeable, at least not AS "characters" rather than as mere portraits that you glimpse briefly. There isn't a whole lot of personality to any of them, and there's no real opportunity to interact with them at all, so it's difficult to say which I "like" best. 10) Yup! |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
Having lots of fun!
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Pausable tactical combat with interesting varied damage to ships, interesting different equipment, abilities etc. Mod-ability. Finding new stuff. Getting into interesting tricky situations in the game, like when damage or not finding the best toys leads to choices and risk-taking. All in all, very well done. Gripes below are signs of enthusiasm! 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Not infinite enough. From the title I was hoping for more infinite space, more infinite and varied play. More going on - more to find. Not varied enough situations. Part of that is the balance not being good enough. Retreating is too automatic. Some of the weapons and equipment are too good. The built-in goals and economy are too limited. Conflict without the good stuff is too risky, and it's too likely to be able to avoid conflict until just being given the good stuff. Best example is the Hyperdrive, which is perhaps too often lying around or available for trade for a few coins (not to mention the swap meet), and then the player can often hop around picking up free toys and fleeing anything dangerous until they can beat opponents. There's no penalty (besides time spent and momentary disappointment) for failure, nor even a record of it (I'd like to see stats on how often I don't do well - see the averages and failures - not just the best pay-off from a long-shot spoiled-brat playstyle). I think only ships designed for ramming should be able to ram, especially by accident - Gargans only. Space ships would probably get wiped out by a collision, and would never try. I wish I could reverse in combat - not just move forward and run into problems when getting too close with no rear-firing weapons. It'd be nice if aliens would run away more. I don't see them do it much even with the "run when all weapons are out" option turned on. My example of why there is an issue with weapon values, fleeing, no reverse, etc., is the situation that I've died in a few times, where my ship is healthy and defeats one enemy but doesn't finish it off completely - it has maybe one weapon half-left. I then turn away from that enemy either to engage another, or just because I'm too close and want to avoid a collision. The crippled enemy then proceeds to shoot me in the back with its one half-working weapon... and the damage piles up quickly. I can't easily maneuver to turn around to settle its hash before it's caused serious damage or even destroyed me. So I should have stopped sooner and blood-thirstily wiped him out, when I'd sorta rather not for role-playing reasons. If I had a rear-firing weapon, I expect it'd probably fire automatically with almost no way to prevent it, too. The five-coins trading system doesn't leave much room for scale of value. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Small for more interesting limits and challenges, but large just because there's more there. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? I like them all. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? About right, but maybe too predictable, without modding. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? I try many different play styles to add to the interest. I wish there was more reason to play it safe, as in statistics. If it kept track of my survival rate, I would try seeing how well I could do without dying, and/or how high I could get my average score. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Sometimes a little. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? No - way too dangerous! 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? Esmerelda. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Edit: Oops - I thought you meant the current version, so I answered "Yep/Yep". After reading Will's answer, I realized you meant the previous game, so that'd be "Nope/Nope" - I'd just heard about it third-hand - a friend of a friend who was addicted. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) Favorite Item is the Plasma Cloaker- I've used it to sneakily defeat enemies I usually can't tackle without some really good weapons. Favorite new feature is the Primordous quest, great idea.
2) Least favorite item is the Mantle of Babulon. I really like the idea, it just seems to make the game too easy and it turns up in the most random places. I'd either make it a quest goal or require the player to assemble Babulon's full regalia. Least favorite feature is your wingmen not being that smart- it can be very hard to manage a full fleet, sometimes the wingmen are a liability. I'd like to see the option for the wingmen to accept some more general orders and fight on thier own. 3) Medium Map- I use WW as a 'take a break from a project' type game, and Medium strikes the right balance between too fast and slow. 4) Pirate Corvette is my favorite. Good combination of starting items and cargo space, and I seem to have much better luck with finding artifacts then life forms! 5) Pretty much spot on, I think, though some are defintly harder then others. 6) I pretty much know how many enemies I can handle with what equipment, so combat wise I tend to play it safe. In the overall game I am a risk taker though- I almost always break the Bauble, I will try just one more star even if my time is running out, etc. 7) Not really enough character interaction to 'roleplay' much, but I do try to complete each mission as a I feel it should be. Like in the science mission I always try to make peace with as many people as possible, in the pirate mission I will ruthlessly exploit everyone and anything for points, for the Military mission I will do my best to wipe out every hostile fleet on the map, etc. 8) Yes, and the start menu, and the task launcher tray! 9) Hmmm, It would have to be Ripcord, cool little background story and a neat ship. Would really like to see more characterization all around though. 10) I only played the demo of SIAS, but I played it a lot. -Will |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) My favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
The various quests , upgrading my ships . Items wich have hidden functions and easter eggs . Combat is nice and simple , but a little bit more control wouldn't actually hurt , like being able to "drag-select" ships and "attack at long range" options . 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Well , I'd like more random events , more quests , more items , a more dynamic Sector Prime . 3) Which map size do you prefer? Huge . The bigger the better ! 4) Which player ship do you prefer? The science ship . I like science missions . Second on my list is the warship . 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? They're spread out all over the spectrum , which is cool . Carriers and deep Hunters are quite easy , Vent Mothers are difficult , while Primordius and the Kawangi are allmost impossible without using quest items . In general , they're just right . 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? A bit of both . I believe in acceptable risk . I take some risks , but I don't push it . 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? As much as I can , I like to roleplay , but there's not much to roleplay WITH in WW . It'd be cool to gain some experience and level up your character or crew a bit , or to interact with aliens like in Star Control II . 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes , and might I add , "Strange Adventure"'s icon looks better than WW's generic planet one ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? Ripcord , of course ! 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Just a demo . I've tried to compile the sourcecode though ... |

Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
I like the cloak best. Hyperdrive is clearly the best item, but having the cloak makes combat much more interesting, particularly when one's collected weapons and other items are not yet that great. I also like the Timeless Bauble as it allows one to fill in a missing item (like the cloak :-) I wish I could figure out how to magical word to make the Bauble give me a hyperdrive! All of the easter egg items are fun, it would jazz things up if most items had some use or purpose to be discovered. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? The Mantle of Babulon is way too nice. Once you get that the game becomes too easy (for pirate and frigate). The crystal fish is better -- applicable to only one species, instead of three. I would like more special quests than two -- how about another few please? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Also, it is too easy to retreat - as long as you hit retreat within a second or two of combat you can escape, even if surrounded. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Medium - a nice 15 min break from work, and not all items guaranteed to show up on every map. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Pirate - limited (but not too limited) weapons loadout keeps combat interesting, with decent cargo space. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? All are good. Kawangi is really difficult, but that's okay, they are supposed to be the ultimate enemy. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Mostly safe, trying to be rational about choices and avoiding fights unless they are winnable. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Not really, mostly I play not so seriously. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Too dangerous. I play enough as it is! 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? I rather like the Garthan who disses you before initiating compat. And the Tan'Ru intro is amusing. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? No. Cheers, Green Frog |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1. The combat system LOOKS great, i could watch the menu background for hours...
2. The combat system IS very shallow though... Also, the galaxy is very sterile. It had no past before i visited it(besides some guy called Babulon, who scattered his stuff everywhere), and has no future after i visited it. 3. Small 4. random 5. hmmm... no idea. 6. risky! 7. yes. 8. not anymore... 9. there is no individual deep enough to be called character. 10. no, only the demo. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
I really like the modability of the game. I like how it sortof plays at being epic while still only absorbing moments of your time. Some of the items seem like they belong in history books while others seem like they belong in the trash can, giving the game a very real feeling. When I first got into combat my very first thought was "damnit I'd better be able to RAM things!" and lo and behold, I can! I think a little bit needs to be done as far as the logistical benefits and detriments to ramming (like if the Klakar ship ever tried to ram something it would crinkle like foil, it's just not designed for that crap) but it should always be an option. Collision is a real concern in space. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? There's not much about the game design that I don't like, but the content could be more diverse. After playing countless rounds on large, medium, and small maps and playing community mods, I feel like the original game is analogous to a "starter set" of a CCG. I think eventually once engine updates have petered out or slowed down you could do well to release greater content packs, especially quests, without changing the balances and overall feel of the current game as much as you would with a mod. The primordius quest especially has a great feeling to it. 3) Which map size do you prefer? large all the way 4) Which player ship do you prefer? i tend to pick the pirate or the military ships but the scanners on the science ship were a nice touch 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? i don't think they're too easy, just too few. this goes along with my request for more content: you end up facing the same bosses too many times and get used to how they fight. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? risky for the most part. i'll elaborate in a sec. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? well, not in the sense of normal roleplaying, but i tend to pick a tactic and stick to it. if i'm in the mood for a hostile conquest (which i frequently am) you'll see me trekking halfway accross the sector to drop the mantle at glory so nobody tries to ally with me. other times that will be the one item that i seek out the most, looking to make as much peace and profit as possible. of course if i find the horlogue or accidentally stumble accross the d-stroyer i really like playing that quest. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? pinned to my xp start menu 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? the lookout frogs are absolutely hilarious but not really a character esmeralda or fomax probably 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? nope, i got here through a penny arcade link I read some of the other responses and PvK's idea about reversability sounds pretty interesting. You could make it as simple as firing braking thrusters to give you a quick drift backwards, in which case you wouldn't even need to add another ship's system or relate it to your normal impulse engines at all. It would give you a good way to avoid ramming as well, which enemies need to do more often (dead ship-drift isn't good enough for me!) as a last resort, or for Garthans maybe a viable tactic. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
Moddability is good. Hopefully there will be a few more goods mods out for the game before long. I also like some of the ambient sounds you get when stumbling upon some of the planetary features. Strangely atmospheric and effective. I also enjoy the simulator, but sadly it's missing an option to upgrade the player's ships. I want to see if a powered up frigate and science ship can take on a fleet of Carriers etc. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Well not my least favourite items, but the PVC is over-powered. I think there needs to be more diversity added to the game and more special quests. I was surprised to find I'd seen nearly all there was to the game within a couple of days. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Large. Gives you plenty of opportunity to explore and find artifacts. Small is too random: it's very easy to have a barely playable universe. Medium is ok, but large is where it's at. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Frigate. I prefer the main ship to be the one doing all the shooting, and that's the Frigate. Pirate vessel is a close second. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? I think they're balanced well, although I'd like to see a super or heavy carrier for the Garthan. Once you have a Particle Vortex Cannon, you can pretty much take out a fleet of Garthan Carriers single handily. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Hmmm, I don't play too risky unless I have a few good items aboard my ship. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Not really. I tend to try and destroy everything in sight no matter what mission I'm playing. I don't think there's the depth or character shown in the game to make you feel like roleplayng. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? The Zorg Helmsman. Here's to Folding space. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Nope. Course, if you want to give it free to your loyal WW players... I'm surprised you didn't ask what enemy strength we prefer as well. I like to have the maximum level. It's great see large fleets duke it out. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
Randomization of the maps, events, encounters. Visuals and sounds are sharp. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Gaining hyperdrive early makes the game far too easy. Could use more variety in events. Stars exploding is interesting, but ultimately not much of a factor. More random factors, such as system failures, encounters. More decisions to make would be ideal. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Prefer small maps. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Prefer the science ship, once I can get a good weapon. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Just right. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Risky! 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Not really. Just looking for a quick diversion, a few fire fights, explosions, and that feeling of not really knowing what's around the corner. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? No, distracting. How would I get work done? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? Frankly, they are all rather unremarkable. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Own and play. But not anymore since WW arrived. |

I also love the nebular plow, once I equipped it and, er, plowed through a nebula. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I was an early purchaser of the game (having been addicted to SAIS) but for some reason I didn't really dive into it until today, of all things. Who can play this for just a single 10 minute session? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Quote:
Honestly, I'd love to see a simple system for handicapping oneself--the ability to remove (or render unusable) any item in the game with a pleasant interface by which to do it. Or else, a method by which score can be adjusted based on the items that were equipped/used in the game... someone who manages to do well with just a basic hydrogen drive should perhaps get a bit of a nudge over the guy who bounced everywhere with his hyperdrive. Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game? I love being able to fly around and upgrade all my ships, having a fleet, etc. I think my absolute favorite moment, period, was when I first discovered the Damocles. My mind was just absolutely blown when that happened. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Okay, when I was playing the demo and it advertised the "Create your own battle feature" my first thought was that I'd get to personally deck out a bunch of ships with weapons and equipment, then pair them off against each other. Instead I get to stick OTHER people's ships and have them fight, which is kinda boring in comparison. I can already guess how most of the fights will turn out, and you can't "play as" all of the ships, or even USE some of the super secret ships. Bah! 3) Which map size do you prefer? Largest. The others aren't as fun - the exploration is so enjoyable, especially on a map with such a long timeline. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? I like playing the Pirate scenario. The pirate ship is fairly fast, has a large cargo space, and rates artifacts as valuable, which in my head seems appropriate. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Kawangi is just ridiculously powerful, and only gets potentially harder as the game goes along.. (since it's possibly destroying the weapons and ships that might kill it) At the same time, I really love the challenge that the Kawangi brings with it. I kinda wish there was a checkbox "make this a kawangi scenario!" Then at least I could practice. <_< 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? The riskier the better! But I always bonk myself when I lose a cool ship because I pushed the envelope a little too far. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Errr.. sort of? 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? No. The quicklaunch bar is much more convenient. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? The Moon Marauder chick. I love the music that plays when you find her and I love her ship. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Nope, didn't know it existed until I came here. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
Features: Combat simulator, Kwangi and Primordius quests. Wish these quests were optional rather than random so I could play them on demand. And of course the mods. The modding capability is probably the best feature of all. Items: The high end weapons/special ship upgrades (neb plow, hyperdrive etc.) and interactive devices (gong, mirror etc.) 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Lifeforms, Useless Artifacts, Passengers. Passengers would be interesting if they provided some sort of usefulness to your crew/fleet or added to some sort of quest. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Largest, always. In fact I wish it went bigger. Even if it meant many stars were added with no items or events. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Military frigate almost exclusively. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Balance is pretty good as is. I usually play at the highest enemy level and this seems sufficiently tough. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? I have to play "safe" at the highest enemy setting. At medium setting I grow a little bigger balls.. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? No. There isn't really any interacting with the characters to speak of. This game could really shine if there was! 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes. Right next to my Urquan Masters (Star Control 2) shortcut! 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? Does WW have any characters? ;) Probably the Klakar or Fomax. Worst is RipCord, I cringe every time I run into him.. ;) 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Own and play.. Usually the "Even Stranger" mod.. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
Yikes, lots more responses. Thanks guys. I'll get back to this one as soon as I can.

Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
All of it. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? What? I don't understand the question. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Medium and Large. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? The Pirate ship. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? just right. The Kwangi are a bit over the top, tho. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Middle of the road. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Sometimes. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? All of them. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Yes. But not amymore. WW rocks! |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
cloak, primordius quest, ability to fire at point in space. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? non-balanced medium and large maps. you'll eventually get everything! 3) Which map size do you prefer? small 4) Which player ship do you prefer? frigate 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? kawangi is over the top - too quick to appear, no bomb, no win 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? medium to risky 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? yes, but it usually the same for all ships and you can't attack once you allied! 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? no 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? 5 fiery fires. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? played a bit before getting WW I really want separate move and targetting commands (targetting a ship or point in space and moving in different direction). |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) I enjoy any quests. - I do have fav items, but too many to list. - I haven't really used the ability much yet, but being able to easily create and implement mods is great.
2) I generally like to play the largest map and it seems it's too easy to find too many items. It makes it seem less rewarding. 3) I usually play the largest map 4) I normally use the frigate. 5) The bosses are fine. Since you can wait to attack Primordius until the end of your game, I find it's usually too easy to defeat. The Kawangi come at you a little early in the game. Quite often, it seems it's kinda hard to properly equip your ship in time. Hasn't really bothered me too much at this point. 6) I usually play kinda risky. 7) Not really. I guess I do in my head, so to speak. The more you feel a part of it, the more enjoyable it is. 8) I keep no program icons on my desktop. I do, however keep an icon in my start menu and in my Games folder on the desktop. 9) The Klakar. Anyone who'll trade you a PVC for a broken Thrint Whistle is cool in my book. 10) I played the demo of Strange Adventures and while looking for the full version found out this was coming out in less than a week. Since then, I've only played this ver. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
Favorite features: the quests.
Favorite items: why, the PVC of course. Least favorite features: there is nothing that is in the game that irks me. Least favorite items: the 1-credit stuff that has no use whatsoever. Preferred map size: Large. Preferred ship: the frigate. Boss difficulty: depends on the boss - Vent mothers, Garthan carriers and even Primordius go down easily if you have the right stuff (read: dual PVCs and/or Damocles) but IMHO Kawangis, deep hunters, and decimators are hard as heck when faced in combat - especially the deep hunters, you can't even run away without taking a lick from them once you're in combat. Mode of play: I play it safe, usually, unless I want to try out new ways of dying. Roleplay: not really. Desktop shortcut: Yes. Character: If I understood the question correctly, the zorg corvette. SAIS: No, I don't. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
The Plasma Coil Cloaker, the multi-missile launcher and the molybdenum node cannon. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Limited possibilities in the Quest scripting language Can't program add-ons in more flexible languages like, say, c++ http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I can barely ever attack any decent-sized urluqai fleet without losing at least one or three ships. It annoys me to have such dirty tactics standing in the way of the expansion of my empire. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif 3) Which map size do you prefer? The bigger the better. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? The Frigate. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Depends. You have to be lucky to be able to beat the worst of them. Sudden exploding stars are very bad news in a ww game, and spells low odds of survival. But so long as the reward meets the challenge, there's no such thing as 'too hard' unless it's impossible. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? I don't take unneccesary risks. Unless i'm bored. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Nope. But i do play it with vigor. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Nopes. It's in a folder on my desktop, though. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? The ones i add through modding http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Nopes. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
Not sure if this is still relavent, and I haven't played all the difficulty levels yet but...
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game? The easy to learn tough to master aspect of exploring. You basically jump in and off you go, no real complicated rules or tricky subscreens to navigate or tedious stats to grind, read what an item does, then just drag and drop cargo and items where you want them, simply brilliant. My favorite items are the "uber" items, specifically finding them, it's like finding treasure. Top of the list would be the "wish-granting" bauble, the hyper drive, and the gong. Also Ilike the 1 credit weenie items, it gives me something to trade with at swap meets. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Well, it's not so much that the stuff in the game irks me it's just small things I wish I could do. For example in the combat sim It would be nice to be able to customize the ships with items i've found in the game. It looks like when i put a ship in my fleet it's just the stock ships, some of which greatly outclass others. Second, I would like to see a weapon or device that lets me board, capture and plunder/scuttle enemy ships in the combat screen, kinda like how you can board derilicts if you "gong" them. The pirate ship should come with this item stock and maybe have a better item available to find(like how the science vessel starts with scanners). Maybe a device which paralizes weapons and engines for a short period of time, and an ability to board certain ships if their shields are down instead of just ramming them(have it be a third option in the attack/ram buttons). After I capture a ship it could be part of my flotila, any parts that weren't dammaged in combat are salvage and you can scuttle or repair it and keep it. Third, some of the weapons area bit unclear on their exact power, range and use, a readout like that in space emires would be cool. Something that displays rate of fire, range, type(beam, balistic, seeker ect) My least favorite item is the Melodium Conograp, not that it isn't cool, traps and surprises are fun, I just dump this as soon as i find it.... 3) Which map size do you prefer? Medium has a good size to it, big enough to explore, and find lots of goodies. It's just right. Small maps are kinda short, good for quicky games, and I do like the large maps when I have time. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? The science ship due to it's scanner. Also it seems like I can make it super powered once I get all the top tier items and friendly ships, before that even the terran frigate will get it's but kicked so retreating is the best tactic no matter what really in the early game. It has a huge cargo bay too. However now that I'm figuring out that reatreating from hostiles is best until you either get the diplomatic items or big guns, I'm finding that the other 2 ships just as fun and the scanner kind of unnescessary. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Just challenging enough without making it impossible, however if you're lucky with finding treasure some can get a bit easy. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Well when I was figuring the game out I always charge in with guns blazing, and occasionally I underestemate the vent mothers and the exact extent of a black hole's gravitational pull, especially when it's between me and glory and i'm running late... 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? To the extent the game allows role play yes, I tend to stick to the mission. A few more multiple choice scenarios like the bauble guy would be fun, maybe you could find artifacts or trade information from other races, then use that to engage in a "conversation" with the race(answering multiple choice or typing 1 word or brief phrase answers like in starship titantic), or perhaps have a simple alien language or "code" you can speak to them in(like the robot race's) which requires some kind of cipher item to learn. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? In order: George and Margie from the manual, Ripcord, The Zorg, The gargathan, the slug guys, and the klakar 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Not yet no..... |

1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game? The Damocles/Primordius endgame!! Particle Vortex Cannon Toy Robot (I freaked when it **edited**) Sardion Optimizer 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? All the missles except the Multi-Missle seem really ineffective. Chromium Gong: this thing is just too cheap. Especially against the Tchorak. Ship speed isn't enough of a factor. ie. if you get the Reactionless Thruster it isn't very helpful. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Medium. Its playable in 15-20 minutes but still very fun. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Military. Its easier to complete the endgames with 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Kawangi: very hard. Perhaps too hard Primordius: Just right. With a loaded military ship, a small flotilla of wingmen and Damocles its just possible to destroy it. Vent Mother: Too easy - especially with the Chromium Gong. Maybe if it shot twice the amount of missles? Deep Hunter: Too easy. Very thin armor. I think the Urulaqui need a capital ship of some kind. Garthan Carrier: Too easy. The fighters are easy kills and close in the Carrier is quite weak. Actually I'd be more afraid of the Corvettes because they are so adept at ramming. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Depends. If I find the Hyperdrive I play it safe. If not, I'm reckless. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Don't know what you mean. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? The Zorg. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? I did play it. - - - - - - - - - - |

1)I like the obscure creatures, such as the Crystal Fish. I wish the other creatures did more weird "stuff", even if it wasn't always something VERY useful, perhaps something event-oriented. 2)I feel ambivalent towards the invasion of the nova-creature as well as the hyperdrive, the latter makes the game too easy for me. Also, the Gong seems way too overpowered, I think using it should give a %-chance that it gets destroyed. 3) I prefer medium map sizes, since the large one seems, again, "too easy" (almost guaranteed to find a hyperdrive, it seems). 4)I like all 3! But the military one seems most attractive simply because of more slots. Would be different if you didnt get more cargo room when you hired other mercs -- then the science or pirate ships would be more attractive. 5)Some bosses' toughness are negated by the hyperdrive or the "folding" merc Zorg: if you have the Gong, you can just keep going back and nailing them one by one. 6) I usually play it risky, since I can always just start again....! 7) I dont roleplay it, although it would be fun -- the games are just too short for RP! 8) No shortcut 9)I don't see too many "characters", but I havent played that long.... Would like to see more! 10) I do not have SAIIS. thanks for making a fun game...! |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) The variety of content and the constant variation between games. The fact that the game mechanics (combat, UI, navigation, etc) are slick and well designed is also integral to why the game is so good. The interaction between items and events (like mirroring the Kawangi into the Vacuum bomb or a black hole) is also a blast.
2) The imbalanced items. Once you pick up the cloak, the gong or the mantle, you're pretty much invincible and a lot of the tension drains away. The neutronium railgun is also too strong against missile weapons- it's usually best to keep the two you start with over most 3 or 4 star weapons. 3) The large map. It's got the most space to explore gives you the best chance to enjoy conquering the galaxy (that's how I usually play it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif) 4) The military frigate. 5) I think the bosses mostly too easy, but in most cases it's due to the fact that they're vulnerable to a particular very common weapon type. Neutronium railguns make fighting tchorak, garthans, and primordius a breeze, for instance. I'd enjoy the solitary bosses more if they were on a level with the Kawangi. 6) I play it risky. It's more enjoyable to do the risky combats than ones that are shoe-ins. 7) Not really. 8) Yes. 9) Babulon. 10) No. I bought the game after enjoying the demo. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
I particularly love the random encounters that make you feel like you've discovered something new on an alien world. I still love the combination of graphics and sound for the quicksilver sea. I'd love it if there were more of these, and if the graphics were just a little larger. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Although I love the particle vortex cannon and hyperdrive, they do seem to make the game almost too easy once acquired. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Medium. Small is too short, and large gives you too many good items, thus making the game get easier as time goes on. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Science vessel. I'm just a nerd at heart. Also, it gives the feeling of "boldy going where . . ." 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? I love the Primordius mission. Got to admit that I've not yet managed to stop the Kawangi. The others are damned tough, but definitely beatable. (especially with the gong!) 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Safe, most of the time, but I occasionally just 'go for it'. Usually regret it too. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? A little - in my head only though. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Hell yes! It takes pride of place in the centre Mac OS X dock. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? Hmm . . . Not Esmerelda, that's for sure. Maybe the Zorg guys. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Had a demo of it that I played a little, but this came out shortly after I discovered it. Thanks for a wonderful game. Who needs Solitaire/Minesweeper anymore. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
I really love the game and thus, it is hard to define exactly which feature makes it so fun to play. I like the fact that each game is different. Also, the fact that a game takes you less than 30-40 minutes. The Klakar are nice. They act both as helpers, traders, bank vault. One thing though: When calling them with the beacon, it should take a few days from the counter (it shouldn't be instantaneous). Although I haven't played many mods, the fact that the game is moddable is definitively a positive point. It is also a challenge to my own creativity. I like the "Esmeralda factor". Sometimes you have to develop a strategy so that your precious loot is not in danger of being stolen. A nice thing would be that after she has stolen something, it would be possible to find Esmeralda on the map (in "her" ship) and fight her to get your stuff back. Some weapons are funny to play with, for instance the Micrometeorite gun. I'd like to see more variety though; for instance, weapons with recoil/inertia, a goo gun (which slows down the enemy ship), etc. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Currently, most star drives are too pedestrian in nebulas. What if some of them gave a speed of 2 or 3 at least? There should be more variety in drives. I liked it in SAIS when it took some extra time to capture a life form. This funny feature is missing from WW. By the way, some of the expensive loot/items/lifeforms should slowly damage your ship's hull (for instance, huge violent beasts or radioactive jewels) -- the player would then want to resell the stuff as soon as possible! Combat is sometimes disappointing; it is slow and limited. I tried to mod the game so that thrusters are 2x as fast and weapons fire 2x as slowly, but it didn't make combats funnier. It would be fun to have faster and more agile ships, but it would require major changes in the way combats work. Ships collide way too often in combat; maybe the shields should have a repealing effect, at least some of them. It would prevent some of the accidental collisions. When we encounter a fleet 'round a planet, the "bonus item" should float in space in a cargo (ie, the enemy fleet would defend it). It would then add some new dimensions in the game: blowing up the cargo by mistake, running away with it (cloaked or with a fast ship), etc. It would be nice to encouter some low-profile baddies between stars (nebulas should be infested with pirates and creatures). And no hyperdrive please!!!! I don't like it. 3) Which map size do you prefer? Medium. I never ever play the small map; most quest are unplayable on it. Maybe there should be special quests only for the small map? 4) Which player ship do you prefer? I love the 3 of them. The one I play the most often is the Frigate, though. At first I would only play the Corvette, but as I got more confident in the game, I started having fun with all ships. With the Science ship, it is important to build a fleet with some firepower; I often give a Zorg ship the status of "flagship". I have to say, though: the Terran fighter (Ripcord O'Reilley) should be a real fighter, and have no star drive. It is too limited to be considered a real ship. And how 'bout having a Terrain carrier? You find it (on the map), you keep it!!! 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Primordius: Too easy to defeat if you have the Furies (Chromium Gong). Maybe the Furies should be slightly scaled down, so that they give only 50% of the damage required to destroy Primordius. Also, Furies should be single-use (or have a limited number of uses, each time getting weaker). Idea for the furies: each time you use them, there is a chance that after destroying the enemy they "materialize" as a ship and attack you back! Vent Mother: Holy moly! This is a major foe, even with the PVC in hand. Although you can have your way with tremendous firepower, 2 Neptunian Railguns and some mobility. Garthan Carrier: I don't really like the Garthan in combat. Their fighters are weak (although they can pack a punch if you're weak too). Their carriers are boring. I like their attitude though. Kawangi: Too strong in combat (unless there is some trick I don't know). If I don't find the LVC, the Furies or the Mirror soon enough, it's the end of the game. Their single undefeatable ship with 2 mighty weapons is just too much. Maybe the ship should be an undefeatable carrier. If you defeat all its fighters, it runs away & escapes from the galaxy. Deep Hunter: Some Urluquai fleets are currently very hard to cope with, especially with their initial "surrounding" configuration. One thing that would help would be to be able to change the initial orientation of the player's ships. When meeting Urluquai, I'd like to have my ships placed back-to-back (and not all facing up with some Urluquai frying my ***). Tan-Ru: The fleet with 2 red Tan-Ru populates my nightmares. There should be no more than one of these kick-*** fleets in any map. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? I take risks. That's why a big Urluquai fleet usually kick my sorry *** at some point. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? No. Although there are some nice roleplaying features in it (like being able to name planets), I don't see the point. Maybe all the stars should be nameless at the beginning of the game. The player would then have to name the stars without a fleet (ie, not owned by aliens). Also, the % of the map that has been either explored (or conquered) for Glory should have some emphasis. The player should choose a flag at the beginning of the game; the flag would then be shown beside the systems that have been "claimed" or "conquered" for Glory. The roleplaying aspect should be explored. There could be a "journal", which would fill automatically, at each game. The only "roleplay effect" I have is an adrenaline shot when I see a star exploding at the start of the Kawangi game. Then, I am totally stressed out and run around the map in a frenzy. Good times. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Absolutely. I play the game at least 3-4 times a week (I usually play 3-4 games each time). 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? I don't know. The game doesn't offer much character development. Maybe the ambassadors should have their say in some situations (for instance, a Celatian would refuse to be present in combats)? 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? I own it, but I don't play it anymore. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
Oh, and I forgot. There are too many types of Time Capsules!!!

Re: 10 questions from the devs.
The Bauble should be worth a HUGE sum of $$$ when it hasn't been broken. So the player would have to ponder the pros and cons of using it.
Same thing for the Mantle. It should be in its "original wrappings" and in "mint condition". If you use it, it loses much of its resell value. |

Re: 10 questions from the devs.
I know this is an old thread, but I want to put my two cents in the bag.
"1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?" All of the main quests, especially the Primordius one. Damocles and all of the Tchorak I think are very cool. The Particle Vortex Cannon is a great item, and I like all of the truly Weird creatures. Really, the entire game. "2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game?" The Chromium Gong should be removed completely from the game. If you have it, coupled with a hyperdrive and maybe a Zorg mercenary with folding abilities, then any battle is way too easy. The hyperdrive, while great for making good scores, should go as well. Or at least make it a bit like the nova cannon where you can only wish for it. "3) Which map size do you prefer?" Any map size. Depends of what time I have, really. The large one is probably my favorite, though. "4) Which player ship do you prefer?" The pirate corvette. Not only is it most similar to the original S.A.I.S. one, but it also is a mix of both good cargo space and reasonable technology. "5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right?" The Kawangi is just right for THE boss. Primordius is too weak, even though I really like the quest in general. I beat him with just myself and Damocles, and reasonable (not even good) weapons. The Vent Mother I find is actually harder to destroy than the Kawangi. And defenitely my favorite ship. The deep hunter is just perfect, and the Garthan carrier is too weak. It should launch way more fighters. "6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky?" Risky. Very risky. "7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it?" Sort of, but not really. "8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop?" Yup. "9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character?" An actual character? There really isn't enough, but, I'd say the Moon Marauder captain. If you count the Tchorak "ships" as characters, then I'd have to say the Vent Mother. She's really just superior to anything else. "10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space?" Years ago, I had the full version for Palm. Then a demo for the PC. I don't own either anymore, but I have Weird Worlds and every single mod I can get, so... |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
I like how events are fairly random, yet after a few plays you can play wise and prepare for them in some ways (keeping Frogs/Robot toy to trap Esmerelda, for example.) The whole quality of randomized elements coming together at some point really appeals to me. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? I don't like how smaller wingman-type ships feel basically useless in combat. The Mirror item makes the game too easy. Lots of cool random items - but having more would be cool, as would be having more to DO with them. Can't use the Stassis Cone for anything? What's it all about? 3) Which map size do you prefer? Largest. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Military. The more weapons, the merrier. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Generally too easy. But please don't just boost their HP - just make it necessary to employ some kind of tactical plan to beat them. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? Risky. 7) When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? I do not filter my actions through a conceived character's personality, no. However, if the game offered roleplay options (dialogue choices, situations to solve through items and quests, choices-and-consequences, picking a race or species, etc.) then that would be pretty cool. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Yes. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? ....Jumbo Shrimp? 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? I had the demo, but once I get WW, I figured that there was no reason to get the older version too. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game? Hm. The Lookout frogs and the robot. To be sure that i keep items i found 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? That the yellow kawangi may come after a short time ... in which i haven't found something to defend 3) Which map size do you prefer? Size does matter. Make it BIIIIIIIIIIIG http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif 4) Which player ship do you prefer? Pirate 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Just right. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? No risk, no fun 7)When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? As somebody told before, picking a race would be cool 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? Macs don't need this http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? Esmeralda. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Not so far. |
Re: 10 questions from the devs.
1) What are your favorite features/items/etc. in the game?
Items you may have ignored the first time, but that turn out to have a use, such as the crystal fish, vacuum collapser, timeless bauble, toy robot, etc. On a similar note, I enjoy some of the combos - foldy guy plus gong, for example - that other people complained about. Also really love Mods since they allow an ongoing supply of surprises generated by other fans of the game. 2) What are your least favorite features/items/etc. in the game? While I like the combos, I'm not as fond of some one-item wins. The mirror can really reduce the fun, since spaceship combat goes away. The Particle Vortex Cannon is just too good - even though I could wish for a Nova Cannon, I'll wish for a PVC instead 'cause it kills fighters too. General bugginess irritates me too. While I love modding, it's brutal sometimes trying to figure out how to debug the mod you've been slaving over. Could really use some debugging tools (for mac). 3) Which map size do you prefer? Small. I can fit a game in between other projects, or cram in a couple quick games while dinner is cooking. 4) Which player ship do you prefer? I want to say science vessel, because I like the value scale it creates with coins/prices. But the Frigate is the most fun. Just wish there was some value to lifeforms and non-systems in the Frigate scenario so you had to choose between trading for valuables and trading for better weapons. 5) Do you think the bosses (Kawangi, Primordius, Vent Mother, Deep Hunter, Garthan carrier) are too easy, too hard or just right? Kawangi's a tad too hard, but that's okay from something you see every 15th game and are best nuking from a distance. Garthan Carrier is super easy, doesn't feel like a boss. The others are just about perfect. 6) When you play Weird Worlds do you "play it safe" or do you play risky? If I'm on the small map, or just killing time, I play take lots of risks. The occasions where I'm in the mood for a large map and longer game I tend to play it safe so as not to blow my progress on one bad fight. 7)When you play Weird Worlds, do you "roleplay" it? Sometimes, but rarely, and only when on the Science Mission. I also often flee from Zorg and Muktians in hope of befriending them later, but that's less roleplaying and more metagaming. 8) Do you keep a Weird Worlds shortcut on your desktop? The Mac equivalent, yes. 9) Who is your favorite Weird Worlds character? The Zorg. I know, a race, not a character. But I dig their faux-zen quasi-hipster goobledygook. 10) Do you own/play Strange Adventures in Infinite Space? Yes. Learned about Weird Worlds because of SAIS. I broke SAIS out again after nearly a year of not playing, and checked the web for new SAIS mods only to learn of WW:RTIS. |
