Searching for mods....

I've managed to try out a few mods for SE-IV, and I like 'em. I'm interested in trying out any and all of them out there, to kinda figure out which ones I really like, and which not so much.

Right now I have the Adamant Mod ( though I haven't yet had time to try it, but I'm eager to... ), the Eclipse Mod , the Masters Mod 1.3 , and the Star Trek Mod ( another I'm really eager to try but haven't had time enough yet... ).

I've heard bits and pieces 'bout others, but don't know much about 'em. I was trying to find the Cultures & Demeanors Mod when I decided to make this thread, since I can't seem to.

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearin' real thoughts & opinions from folks 'round here as to why some mods are good, and some not so much, and even how to find 'em.

This page here has a list of pratically all known mods:
http://www.malfador.com/se4mods.html

Alternatively some mods (including rare or low key ones) are hosted here:
http://www.pbw.cc

Keep in mind you need to be registered with the Play-by-Web site in order to download the mods there. It takes only a minute or two to do so.

What are your thought and/or opinions about some of the mods ??? Any you'd feel incline to recommend ???

Re: Searching for mods....

Adamant is a huge mod with a massive learning curve. It has the most options for racial traits and such of any of the mods I have played. It does not work well in SP games.

I have not had a chance to play the masters, eclips, space food, or CB mods in great length. I do know that they are enjoyable but take some time to learn.

Star Trek Mod has a moderate learning curve. Requires some skill to play effectively and uses mounts for engines. It is also a good SP mod.

Dark Nova Played this mod in a PBW game and outside of PBW and enjoyed it. The AI is a bit weak though.

The Expanded Mod Is more or less stock SEIV Deluxe but incorperates FQM and Neo Tech ships hulls. Some slight changes over stock but mostly stock and plays very well in SP as the AI is from the TDM mod.

TDM The best AI mod for single player to date.

Devullun Don't recall much about this mod but do remember that it was fun.

I have played more mods but I cannot recall them at this time.

Thanx

That's the kind of response(s) I was hoping for. Very helpful. I'd like to hear more from as many folks as care to add here, but that is a great start http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Here's a thought... Instead of posting here, how about we add stuff to wiki articles for the mods? Everyone can help flesh them out!

Must be an older version you played. The current version has TDM AI's adapted for DN4, though they don't use Intel, which is still something I'm looking into. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I've added some details to Wiki for my mod. Gotta do more though but it's a start.

Cultures & Demeanors Mod. It's not really a full-blown mod per se, it's more of an add-on to add some flavour and make your Culture selection actually matter (immensely) with regard to your style of play. I'm working on a new version, I'll see if I can put it up here someday soon.

It's really nice to see the C&D Mod mentioned once in a while, you know http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Interesting. How could I have missed that one. It is exactly what I need now...

For a completely new (and massivle improved, imho) game, play the proportions mod. It's a whole other game, and a very popular mod. you should have no trouble picking up a game on PBW. To be honest I'm surprised I'm the first to mention it in this thread.

Re: Searching for mods....

I've been playing the Masters Mod the last week or so. Its pretty good, the AI is good also, at least they are givving me a good run. I don't think they are set up to atomatically generate, but I added them manually and they are proving a challenge, even with a medium bonus.

A friend of mine also mentioned to me the following mods: Carrier Mod, Imperium Verus Mod, Invasion Dev Mod ( not sure about the name of this one ) , DevNull Mod, Peace Station Mod, PvK Mod, and Ultimate Sizes Mod

Anybody ever heard of them ?

Captain Kwok February 15th, 2006 12:12 PM

Re: Searching for mods....

Yes.

Some of those are fairly popular like DevNull (similar to stock, but better) and Carrier Battles (not like stock, but better). The Invasion Mod by CombatWombat also has forums and has a couple of pbw games running. I've never tried the Imperium one, but I believe an older version was packaged with Deluxe and an update is available at SE.net now. The Peace Station mod has a site, but I've never tried it myself...

PvK Balance mod is stock but with highly balance culture and racial traits, and Ultimate sizes just adds a bunch of vehicle sizes for stock. I guess they're both mini mods.

Keep in mind the MM link I gave earlier has descriptions for all these mods.

Thanx, I checked out the link you posted, and it was well worth it.

I really want to hear " meaty " thoughts and opinions, too. Not simply a general review. I can glean a lot more from folks who've tried it, good or bad, that I can from a review. Gives me the basics, but not the " feel " of it all.

Re: Searching for mods....

Haven't played Devnullmod in three or four years, but it used to be my favourite mod, so maybe I'll go write it up.

i know you want 'meaty' reviews, but let me tease you with a barbeque saucy four-word review of Devnullmod: Planet-eating space monsters!!!!

Carrier Battles
Simple pieces... very complex interactions.

Everything is useful in its own way, and the best fleet has a hearty mix of everything.

For a change of pace you might try the Risk Mod. Simple "board-game like" mechanics. With no research or design decisions to make you can concentrate soley on tactics. It even works as a single-player mod, but I recomend it more against other humans.

Hey Geo, there is a spot for your Risk Mod just waiting for details!

Somebody should open a Rock-Paper-Scissors mod game on PBW.

Someone should mention a AI Campaign mod, too. What's the best current link?

The old home page is still dead... You could use the page on SEnet as an interim solution:
