New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
(The set is available HERE and will soon be available on PBW and www.spaceempires.net, provided Fyron is willing to host.)
I started work on this set about 2 months ago, finished 2/3 of it then couldn't find the inspiration to make the remaining models different from what had already been done. I stuck it on the back-burner until yesterday when I started to complete it, then finally took a couple hours today to finish it off. Before you ask, yes this shipset borrowed somewhat from the Phong, one of my favorite stock SEIV shipsets. As you'll see, it's also quite different, so I think it works. If you read the README and Credits, I lay it all out there just on the off chance that you're curious http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif If you have any criticism, comments, etc. please feel free to post them. Be totally honest, even if you hate the set http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif This set is totally Neo-Standard compliant as well. Below are a couple images, the Worldship and the Heavy Cruiser: http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr..._Worldship.png http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr...uiserHeavy.png |

I notice that you have them called "Nosral Republic" in the AI_General file. Confederacy is a better name. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

I for one think it's very good. Not a criticism, but just one thought to add, though - No mine, satellite, or fighter groups, and no fleet.... |

BTW, I wanted to say that I love the way you've taken inspiration from the Phong ships without simply copying or recolouring them. It's a recognisable Phong-derived set, but still unique. Very good. I like the way you tweaked the race pic as well. |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
Kinda reminds me of the Romulans; warlike beings, originally members of a compassionate race, clash with their "softie" brethren, take off for a distant world and expand without contact with their brethren for many years.....
The race portrait is creepy. It looks like some Tiberium-mutated Visceroid humanoid or something, it's really creepy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
New Shipset! Hopefully done right this time!
OK, the updated and fixed set is attached to the original post in place of the defective one, and for your convenience, here is the link:
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr...?Number=407158 I will also be sending the updated set to Fyron, asking him to remove the bad set and loading this one instead, so until this happens, here will be the only place you can get the set. Fyron and Black Knyght: Thank you both for your reports of errors, they are both fixed in the update. You've also been included in the README and Credits file. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Dogscoff, I'm very happy you like the set, it's always my hope that when I create something it will be appreciated by some people. Thanks a lot for letting me know you like it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif It inspires me to do more in the future. SIU: That's good you find it creepy, I was going for the slightly maniacal and evil look. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Whew. I think that's it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Time to get to work on the Wikiing. |

Thank you once again Fyron! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
I like it. The deep shadows give it a dark feel, but its still light enough that they won't disapear into the background.

Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
Thanx for the inclusion, though that was HIGHLY unexpected !!! You've developed a terrific shipset here, and I'm quite pleased to include it amongst my favorites.

They have been Wikified! I hope you don't mind Dogscoff, I 'borrowed' much of the page formatting from your page about the Space Vikings, since I know little about Wiki formatting/instructions. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
Well, that is actually the prefered method, for wiki consistency.

I also appear to have forgotten to link to this page which has some hints and tips for shipset wiki pages. |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
On the SE.net site:
"both of which they excell at." Should be "both of which they excel at." And "There's is a very practical society" Should be "Their's is a very practical society" |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
[Nitpick]*Theirs'*, actually. Apostrophe after the word for possesive form.[/Nitpick]
|
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
I noticed the spelling errors after the latest upload, but decided it wasn't worth uploading it again just to fix a couple spelling errors. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
However, when I decide to tweak something again, the changes will be made and credit given to those who pointed them out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
No, it should be: "Theirs is ...". "Theirs" is always a possessive form - there is no apostrophe.

Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
Very nice shipset! I like the "Evil Phong" theme!
The Worldship is nice and imaginitive (not a ball). The CarrierSmall image is not showing up as "Light Carrier" in viewer2.2.htm. I'm not sure if that's a bug in the shipset filenames, or in the HTM viewer. Corvette looks like it might be larger than the Frigate (backwards). Critiques: * The Light Crusier, Cruiser, and Heavy Cruiser look more to me like fighter shapes than capital ship shapes. Conversely, the fighters look more to me like ship shapes. This is kind of counter-intuitive and so either interesting or tempting to swap them, depending on one's tastes. * The infantry image looks non-organic and taken literally, much larger than the smaller vehicle troops. And there's only one of him in an infantry unit. How about making an image with a group of smaller ones? PvK |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I'm happy you like the set PvK. I think I'll take your suggestion with the corvette/frigate issue, switching them should solve things.
I think I'll leave the LC/CR/HC as they are. It's kind of tempting to switch things around, but I also like them as they are. I never was really happy with the infantry image, as the name implies it should be biological not mechanical. I can't do humanoid (Nosraloid!) pictures at all, so it kinda sucks as it is. However, you're right that it is far too large in comparison with the others, and I think I'll change it from a single large image to multiple smaller ones, as you suggested. It should look better. I'll also take a look at the Light Carrier to see if I've made an error in the filenames, which is the most likely issue. Thanks a lot for pointing out the issues you've seen, I should have time to fix all of them tonight and upload another new version. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif Think Fyron's going to get a little annoyed with me, new version every couple days http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Guess I'll have to stop making errors! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |

Here's a bit of an idea that might work as a kind of " temporary " solution.
I'd come across a kind of Phong infantryman, and maybe with a little recoloring he might work out as a Nosral one ??? |

Thanks a lot for the suggestion Black Knyght, but I think I'll have to stick with the one I have. I usually prefer in my shipsets to use only images I've created myself where possible, and even if my infantryman looks a little goofy (which it definitly does!) I think I'll keep him. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif But thanks again!
Attached to this post will be version 1.2 of the Nosral. All errors that have been posted should have been fixed, including spelling errors and a rather stupid mistake I made naming the Light Carrier that made it not show up in game. The infantry pictures have also been redone, and I think they look marginally better, though not of the quality I'd like. Oh well. Can't have it all http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Enjoy! A new version should be up on SE.net soon as well, if my constant release of new fixes hasn't driven Fyron up a wall already http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I'm hoping to upload to PBW as well in a few days, provided new errors are not encountered. Thanks to everyone for the feedback provided thus far, it is most valuable! |
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
It takes less than 2 minutes to update, you know. You are not in any danger of annoying me, so please continue with fixes as they become necessary.
|
Re: New Shipset! The Nosral Confederacy!
I figured that might be the case, but thought I'd toss the idea out there anyway. Still a nice set, all-in-all

To improve the troop, I suggest building a 3D model, rendering it and then touching up the details with a 2D pixel-pusher (something like Paintshop Pro). I'm perfect proof that you don't need any great skills as a 2D artist, just patience and experimentation with the effects. Take a look at the attached zip for an example. |
