One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
I'm at work, so I haven't got a chance to play with the new editor... but can you tell me if you can place one-way warp points?
I never thought they existed until the Last game I played where I found one! |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
One-way warp poin? What did it look like?

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
You can creat one way wp's by making one end very damging to ships and the other end normal. that way you can go in to a system but it will cost you to come out.

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
No that's not what I meant... I had a REAL one-way WP in my Last game... one system had a WP to the other, but the other system had no corresponding WP (you just emerged in empty space). The "recieving" system was a nebula BUT I had sensors able to defeat the nebula's cloaking.
One stange thing was that you didn't see the "line" showing that the two systems were connected on the Galaxy map... UNLESS you were in the system, in which case you saw the WP line connecting the two systems. No-one else had an experiance like this? (I can't bost the saved game since I'm using a BIG custom mod... the saveed-game would freak under a normal installation (i.e., ships with 40 engines!) And Dracus, your idea is not a 1-way WP... since the ships would either be deystroyed entering the WP or exiting the WP... it's a 0-Way WP [This message has been edited by Trachmyr (edited 19 April 2001).] |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Actually, the ships would probably only be damaged if they ended their turn on the damaging end. (if it works like black hole damage) It would be a two-way warp point in almost all circumstances.
|
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
To add a normal warp point in the editor, you have to place a WP in both systems with the destination set to the other WP. To creat a one-way warp point, you probably just create a WP in one system and don't do the other end.

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
You can remove one end of the WP and the game editor saves it OK. I think that you would have to play the game to see if works properly.
Hopefully with no errors generated. It would be fun though, you can't come and go on the same warp point. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon10.gif Late breaking news..... I run a ship thru the one way WP and it worked OK, and because there is no WP icon on the other end you can't trigger the WP. Looks like it works! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon10.gif [This message has been edited by Aussie Gamer (edited 19 April 2001).] [This message has been edited by Aussie Gamer (edited 19 April 2001).] |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Hey, how about doing that twice?
Make a one-way warp point into a system, but a one-way damaging warp point back out of the system? It would look like a wormhole with one deformed end, and you only take damage when you enter the deformed end. |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Well I can confirm that if you delete one end of a WP, or simply don't place the second WP of a set, you do indeed create a "1-way WP". I don't know if the "one-side-damages/one-side-normal" WP works, but I would assume so! The game accepts this set-up with no errors... we can really have fun with odd WP configurations!
I tested WP that have turbulence on one side and not the other, and they work fine. [This message has been edited by Trachmyr (edited 19 April 2001).] |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
What about a "one-way" galaxy?
All the warp points are one way "to the right". The right-most systems wrap around to the left-most systems. You wouldn't have to worry about the guy on your right atacking you, but you could attack him. You would be attacked by the guy on your left, but couldn't fight back! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif It would be a galaxy-wide rock-paper scissors game, with the left side of empires crumbling, and expanding on the right. You'd have to keep pressing the guys to your right harder than the guy on the left is hitting you! Just disable stellar manip, and the empires will drift around and around and around the galaxy http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif. |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Once you warp to the next system, how would you get your ships back home? Or would all your ships be on one way missions?

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
<sings>
Boldly going forward, 'cause we can't find reverse... </sings> A one-way would work with a cycle, or similar directed graphs (e.g. two nested cycles, where there are no CCW edges). Or like the one-way-street Wumpus map -- a lattice where north and east are the only options, except that the north and east edges wrap-around to the south and west edges, respectively. Leave, and you have to take the long way home... Spymaster races might be excessively powerful in such a system, 'tho. It'd probably have to be disabled. ------------------ -- The thing that goes bump in the night |

Thanks, Taqwus. Now I'll have "Star Trekkin'" running through my head all night.

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
You could make the Rocky Horror Picture map, just a step to the left !!!

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
I was thinking about making a tough AI, start it in the midle of the map in a rich system with lots of Ruins to give it a big tech advantage. Make only 1 WP a normal one that winds through nebula after nebula for 20+ systems... this is your only way to get to the AI. On the other hand the AI's systems has dozens of 1-way WP that lead to all the player's Homesystems!
Like an invasion from extradimensional aliens! |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
What a great idea. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/shock.gif
I would not give it that many ruins though, as the AI would trash players too quickly. Definately give it high/ high bonus though. Love to see the map. The annoying thing is that the players would not know where the opening is so they will have troble mining the opening at the start until they narrow it down a bit. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
One other possibility to play a real difficult game:
Give your race their home in a system with one-way warp points only leading into the system but not out! You will not be able to expand beyond your system till you researched warp-point manipulation, but all the aliens can visit your home. |

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Speaking of one-way WP's, I haven't seen many lately with the current patches. I used to see them all the time (when SE4 was 1.01 or something); now they are quite rare.
Does anyone know offhand if the frequency of them has been changed or am I just playing far fewer games? Also, maybe someone can clue me in on where to mod to increase the frequency - it makes for more interesting strategies.... |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Actually I think the 1-way WP that appear in the game (yes I had one in V1.3) are due to an error when the event "warp point closes" happens. I think that only 1 WP closes, as as we now know from the editior... a WP is actually 2 Warp points.

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
aah.. now that solves the question.
Good that there is a board like this. |
Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
I just discovered that the map editor disconnects only one side when you delete a warp point. I searched out this old thread. VERY interesting for editing maps. I will definitely have a moderate number of one ways added into the map. Perhaps there will be one in every system. Actually I can not add very many anyway since most systems already have six plus warp points in them....

Re: One-way WP\'s in the map editor?
Any system can have up to 10 warppoints created during the game by SM.
You can have as many WPs as you want if you create them using the map editor. Just like you can have as many stars in a system as you want. |
