OT: Tabletops
 

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to know which tabletops the seasoned wargamers from the Dom 2 community play and why you prefer a certain system.

I have been playing warhammer 40k for some time (Tau and Blood Angels), but have recently switched to Confrontation because I feel the rules are superior, the models more detailed and you need less money to get a starting army.

So, what do you people play? And what would you think about a Dominions tabletop? I would very much like to collect an abysian army http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Does Twilight Imperium count? It's more board game than tabletop strategy game, the upshot being you don't spend your life savings on miniatures, and your weekdays on painting those miniatures.

warhammer 40k i have tau and im starting tyranids. im also going to expand into a fantasy vampire counts army sometime

Since my forced move I have not been able to play as many of my old wargames as I used to. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif We even had a now defunct game club back in Michigan just for wargames and RPGs. I played a lot of Star Fleet Battles (SFB), World in Flames (WiF), Empires in Arms, Warhammer Fantasy Battle and 40k, Rolemaster, Starfire, Babylon 5 wars, and more. I've been searching high and low for a set of the white ones, myself. No luck so far, so I've had to use red M&Ms.

A LOT of people are switching to confrontation in the portland metro area.

I have in 40k an 8-9k Ork Horde, a dismantled unassembled space marine army, and 3k Necron Army.

Fantasy - Chaos, and Empire.

I haven't played Warhammer in a while. No one I know really plays, and its a pain to get a game, so I stopped really trying.

GURPS is very good for tactical fantasy or historical medieval combat with relatively small numbers of figures, if you learn and use most/all of the advanced rules.

Well, it's good for fairly big battles too, if you revel in the detail and don't mind spending hours and hours at it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

For less complexity of the same thing, there's the predecessor: The Fantasy Trip, now out of print but there is an (even slightly simpler) derivative version with modules being published on the web.

I used to play lots of board wargames (e.g. Starship Troopers, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Squad Leader, Starfleet Battles, etc etc etc etc), but not very much for a long time now - too much time playing computer games.

I recently bought the 3rd edition for 80€ (that's the normal price around here) and I am very disappointed. The game is just boring, because after 4 sessions we came to the conclusion, that the game you play on the board (moving ships, conquering planets) has almost no influence on who wins the game, due to the imperial strategy and unfair mission objectives.

Never seen the european currency € before? I don't want to sound rude, but it is a common prejudice here that the horizon of the average american ends at the coast...

On the subject of Twilight Imperium, I highly suggest you house rule the game, because in my experience it doesn't need many changes to fix. My group altered the Imperial strategy card to provide only 1 VP + 1 if you're in control of Mecatol Rex (that giant planet at the center of the universe), allowed players to purchase technologies with influence instead of resources, and made it so that dreadnoughts fired (and removed casualties) first & fighters last. Turned out to be pretty fun!

I don't work at a bank, and am not a savant, so I'm sorry if I don't know the currency exchange rates (which are adjusted constently btw).

You do know how many currency symbols there are right? Your telling me you know them all? I sure as hell don't. I don't want to start a huge thing here, but it really bugs me when people make sweeping comments about us. Have you spent any time here?

That and the general comment is just silly. Unless you:

1. Do buisness in a foreign country.
2. Cater to Foreign clients/customers.
3. Travel to foreign countries.

What possible reason would you have to keep track of foriegn currency?

And PS. one generalization that is fair...most Americains are sensitive to the word prejudice and 9 times out of 10 will get offended, especially if its unwarrented.

Pardon me, but US is so big some things just feel weird for Europeans. Until recently, all the countries in the Europe had their own currency. Now most lands in the EU use the same currency, euro (€). Until recently, almost every time one went out of one's own country, which might be smaller than a state, currency changed.

For us Europeans, the fact that an American doesn't know something very important feel just absurd. But for Americans, it must feel just as absurd that Europeans don't know, err, some very common legislation in the neighbouring state. Or something. I don't know enough of US to come up with an example. My point is, that it feels very strange, because things important in European life aren't important in American life, but that difference is very hard to grasp.

I also think that rude generalization is true, for most Americans, but also for most Europeans. We only have west and south coasts, though, so the line in the east is somewhat hazy. Still, I don't know anything about African countries, and I know nothing of the Asian countries except for the big ones, and I know very little even about them - and I know nothing about the US. I probably can't name more than a dozen states, if that. I think that is just as absurd for those in the US than not knowing euro is for us in the Europe.

I personally don't expect anyone to know anything about the US that has never spent any time here. Most people tend to focus on the things that affect them personally. If you can name 12 states, you have a leg up on a lot of people living here.

I think most people would guess that the Euro has something to do with Europe. I know it because I follow the news, but have never delt with it, so had no clue what the currency exchange rate was (which was what I was asking).

Anyhow, the only thing I find absurd is judging a country of our size without any substantial basis for those judgements.
