OT: If you lead the world, what would you do?

As the title implies, the question is, What would you do if you, and solely you, controlled the direction the world took. What would your policies be, what would you focus a united humanity on?

Personally, once the world was lead by me, I'd focus everything beyond the essentials (basic health care, etc.) on spaceflight. I would put all the worlds resources towards developing practical and cheap sources of propulsion, searching for better methods of spaceflight and moving out into the galaxy. I bet that if the entire world was focussed on that goal and solely on that goal rather than on petty economics and ethnic feuds, we'd be in other solar systems within a century. Throughout our solar system within a couple decades. Expand, or die.

That's what I'd do, how about you?

Re: OT: If you lead the world, what would you do?

I would prove that absolute power currupts absolutely.

1. I would disarm the entire civilan population of the world.
2. I would form a secret police force answerable only to myself.
3. I would obolish all civil rights and impose military rule throughout the world.
4. I would have all of those that I hate gathered up and burned alive in a pit filled with gasoline. I would charge admittion and make it a pay per view event. I would make it a law that all must watch or suffor the same fate.
5. I would have all those that have ever opposed me, rumored to oppose me, suspected of opposing me, or that I fear might oppose me arrested and executed.
6. I would conduct "purges" of the military to ensure that only those who are loyal to me are around me.
7. I would form labor camps and fill them with ex-bankers, lawyers, politicians, and insurance administratiors.
8. I would crush any rebellion by any means at my disposol up to and including the use of nukes.
9. I would begin the brain washing of young minds in order to develop an entire generation of loyal followers.
10. I would change my name to Atrocities.
11. I would proclaim myself a GOD and make it a law that all must worship me, Lord Atrocities.
12. I would have any who speak ill, or are suspected of speaking ill of me hung from poles in every city. Hanging around their necks would be signs that read "Loyalty Is Life. Disloyalty is death!"
13. I would have all of you sent to prison as you are my friends, but as history has shown, friends are the first to turn on you when you obtain power.
14. I would enslave entire populations to work as laborers in the farms, factories, and business that of the world. Those who do not work, would become food for those who do work.
15. I would have the infirm, the weak, the old, and the sickly ground up into the meat that will then be served to the masses as fast food.

Promptly disolve the world government and set up a true, vote-based democracy, most likely.

Get me a few billion dollars, and recreate the goverments before me, except with the fact than I'm absolute ruler, and what I say goes. Other than that, pretty much nothing.

How would I rule, Well I would start by making myself the "Grand Nagus". Then outlawing all Female Cloth's. Except during winter. Followed by the "barefoot and pregnant" law.

Re: OT: If you lead the world, what would you do?

I'd focus on restoring Earth's ecological health before it's too late, and making life on the planet self-sustaining and maintainable.

Ecological policy (generally priority 1):

* Halt most conversion of land to human use.
* Restore natural environments and prevent extinctions, restoring plant and animal habitats and ecosystems.
* Increase research into ecosystem health.
* Put fishing under control of scientists with the goal of restoring oceanic health, preventing extinctions and achieving eternally maintainable fishing levels.
* Research and develop fusion, solar, wind and tidal power.
* Phase out coal, petroleum, and fission power.
* Research and develop very low-emission vehicles.

Social/political policy:

* For-profit corporations will be re-chartered so that their mission statement is to do things that benefit humanity in some way other than making investors richer.
* Acceptance of the right of communities to define their own rules which may conflict with other communities. The United States, for example, will evolve to states (and in some cases, counties and cities) which each have different laws to fit different communities - people will be encouraged to move to states which have communities and laws that match their belief systems. Some other parts of the world where people are caught in genocidal conflicts, may need to be segregated into their own communities.

Urban design:

* Redesign modern urban and suburban areas to be pedestrian-focused and connected by public mass transportation, rather than automobile-based communities. Most American suburban communities will be re-forested, etc.
* Urban renewal will preserve historical and interesting architecture and destruction of old buildings will tend to be done first (or only) to structures with no redeeming aesthetic value.

Information technology:

* People will have the right to anonymous free data access, anonymous encrypted private communication, and free uncensored expression as long as it doesn't hurt others (e.g. child porn), and to ignore whole categories of content.
* Copyright and intellectual property laws phased out through a schedule of increasingly shortenned expiry, and eventually replaced by new systems which reward individual content creators but quickly open up content to free access to published works by all.

And other stuff... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

There's no system out there which can replace copyright. Just limit it to the life of the artist or forty years, whichever is longer.

Also, disolve coorperations entirely. The're inefficient at producing an economy.

Also, cities? Bad idea. The crowding leaves people feeling disconnected and irratated.

And speed research of electric cars.

First, I'd create a huge inescapable 'camp' called Super Happy Fun Land. Then, I'd take the entire leadership of any body of authority (governments, religions, corporations, etc) and stick them in Super Happy Fun Land.
I would then inform the population that the remainder were free to reform said organizations by having those who wished to lead them stand for election. Everyone who stood for election would be publically shot. Then, I'd do the same thing again. And again. One more time. And one more for the road. At this point, the population would have come to the realization that governments, religions, corporations are a bad thing, and certain not worth the hassle.
I would then issue a proclimation that every person on the planet is responsible for everything that they do, or have done to them. Total, absolute responsibility. The words "It's not my fault" will constitute a capitol offence (if it's really not your fault, whoever is responsible will take responsibility, ergo declaring something not your fault can be nothing other than an admission of guilt).
Failure to live up to your responsibilities will result in you being sent to Super Happy Fun Land.
Then, I'd retire to my harem of Android Slave Girls.

Oh, yes, and I'd have someone invent Android Slave Girls.

Re: OT: If you lead the world, what would you do?

Ever read Brave New World? Kinda like that. Most of the population kept doped up and happy; western governments are almost there with "reality television", but I think they'll need a little chemical nudge to complete the process, and cancel out any of the "news" or "politics" nonsense that may slip through. Most efficient distribution method would probably be via the water system, but methods to deal with anyone who uses well water or buys bottled water will have to be found; probably could just spike the bottled water supplies first, then the general supply, since everyone knows that people who drink bottled water are loopy anyways, so no one will notice. Once this is accomplished, the time to begin labor restructuring begins. First, round up everyone with a useless job in regional processing camps. All politicians, lawyers, business executives, "celebreties", telemarketers, journalists, writers, and artists will be rounded up, given a few extra hits of the happy drug, and sent to the camps. Those that are deemed capable of doing real manual labor are then assigned to new jobs in agricultural, janitorial, construction, etc., and others are sent off to help make even more reality television. Everyone else will be shifted into the areas in and around major cities. To facilitate the move for those too attached to "home" for the happy drug to overcome, there should be some kind of plague where the cure can only be had at the major cities; once you come into the city though, you can never leave. Brave New World has genetic classes of people; I think this is too hard. Instead, we'll just pump the unhappy ones with so much of the happy drug, that they will soon become so baked that even if they're sober, they will be incapable of thought. The stratification will then occur naturally. Once everyone is kept within a certain area, individual vehicles will become unnecessary except for the few in addition to myself who run the show. You can walk to anything you need, and can take public transit if you want to go elsewhere. Ixnay on the asgay, no oil problem. Also, once everyone is in a confined place, it will be easier to implement population control measures; six billion is far too many, but I could get it down to a more managable two billion in a few generations by throttling back the birth rate and eliminating any who can no longer provide any value to the doped up society. If a reality television star loses popularity, the only humane thing to do is make them OD. Same with elderly, disabled, and terminally ill. So, within about 30 years, birth rates can be brought back up to stabalize the population at around 2 billion.

PvK is right though. If we keep trashing our environment the way we have been, there will come a point, in the not so distant future, where the damage will become so great that it cannot be undone.

I believe that the planet is a living breating thing that is changing and aging around us. We don't like to see these changes as they spell bad things for our future. From the polar caps melting, to receeding glaciers the planet is warming up. However this is to be expected as the planet changes.

I think the damage that we have done is significant, but pales in comparisson to mother nature. He have contributed a fair share of trama to the planet, but in the great skeam of things, the damge we have done over the last 150 years is rather small compared to the thousands of years that mother nature has been at work.

Right now we face several life ending events, the poles might flip, the megnetic field might collaps, the sun might go nova, we could get hit by a comit, the moon could explode, etc.

These are all real possibilities and surely one day one of them will come to pass and we will all be no more.

In the mean time we must learn to work toward protecting what we have, or we will surely loose it.

That is why under my rule, environmentalists would be given the power over millions of slaves and be ordered to clean up the planet.

Depends what you mean by poles might flip. If you mean the magnetic poles flipping, well they posit that may happen relatively soon. They also don't think it'll have much of an impact or any impact at all on life. It's happened many times before.

Magnetic field collapse...I don't think that's too likely to be honest. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

The sun is guaranteed to go nova...but not for another 4 billion years or so...

Hit by a comet, entirely possible. I'd be more worried about an asteroid though.

Moon exploding, no mechanism I know of that would cause that except for a massive impact from an asteroid or similar body.

Honestly, I'd be more worried about a supernova in our stellar neighbourhood, as that'd be guaranteed to wipe out all life. Or a gamma-ray burst nearby that was aimed in precisely the wrong direction, thus also sterilizing the Earth.

Atrocities April 22nd, 2006 03:44 AM

Re: OT: If you lead the world, what would you do?

The core is hardening, and the poles magnetic field is also weakening. When it fails, and it will fail, it could signal the start of a pole polarity shift. Best guess has been that the magnetic field of the Earth will "off line" any where from six months to hundres if not thousands of years. So if the poles do flip, and they are on the virge of doing so, then we have a serious problem.

Any one have sun block 10B as in Billion?

I think it might be a good idea to invest a lot more time and money into determining what the effects of a complete or near complete magnetic field break down will be.

Its not likely going to be an orderly weakening fade to zero, and then climb back up in the opposite direction.
More likely, you'd see increasingly chaotic strength shifting and local reversals until the reversed regions exceed the normal regions, and take over officially.

Certainly won't be fun for the residents, though.

This would make for a great pre-story for sev. The galaxy's magnetic properties shifted thus laying waste to every world in the galaxy. 2400 years after this great catastrophe, many civilizations began to explore the universe, expanding out ward into the unknown, exploiting new resources and extermentating any opposition to create their own Space Empire.
