Does Any One Know Where
Does any one know where Express stores emails on ones hard drive? What file or folder?
|
Re: Does Any One Know Where
It squirrels them away in a hidden system folder, with one of those registry-like hash names.
This article may be of use: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670 If you want to get the actual database files themselves, this site should be useful: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000457.htm Outhouse Express is a truly terrible program that you should look into replacing. I hear that Thunderbird has become decent lately. |
Re: Does Any One Know Where
Thanks Fyron. The MS Tech support guy has recommended that I do a complete system restort - destructive - to reset my sytem. They cannot figure out why I am unable to udate aside from speculating that during the restore, a program that HP has which in his words is "shotty at best" key files were corrupted.
So I am going to do a full restore as soon as I can see if I can retrieve my old emails. If not then they are gone. Man I lost so much that it just makes we want to go and do some evil to those responsible for these suck *** programs. Hell even my back ups won't work because Windows won't read the GD disks! And too top it all off, I an now out of the SE V beta. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I don't know what to do about that, say for emailing Aaron and asking for help in re-authorizing me. This truly sucks. I lost all of my images, all of my pictures, all of my DOGA work, everything. Who would have thought that WINDOWS wouldn't recognize its own back up cd? |
Re: Does Any One Know Where
The failure to recognize the backup might be part of the malfunctions caused by the partial update. Once you DO get a working system, maybe you will be able to restore the things on that backup disk?

Re: Does Any One Know Where
And restore whatever was causing this in the first place. I'd suggest saving as much data as you can (including those files you have no access at the moment, there is workaround for that) and making fresh install. Thunderbird is infinitelly better then Outlook Express and I switched only recently myself. If you do stay with outlook then you should know that you can change folder where you mails are saved to something far easier to trace and backup (like My Documents/My Mail folder).

Re: Does Any One Know Where
If you do go to the reinstall route, make sure to set up a separate data partition so that when Windows blows itself up in the future, you don't lose anything. Use TweakUI to remap some system folders (eg: My Documents) onto the data partition for even less worry. 6 or 7 GBs should be plenty for the Windows patition, esp. if you install large programs and games on the larger data partition.

Re: Does Any One Know Where
Well, I hope Windows isn't so braindead that you have to re-install the entire system or nothing. I would hope he can recover his data without having to go back to SP1.

Re: Does Any One Know Where
Aren't you glad MS software uses registry crap instead of "legacy methods" like just storing data in files in the program folder?
|
Re: Does Any One Know Where
Nearly everyone does that these days... and stores crap in folders under My Documents... ungh.
|
Re: Does Any One Know Where
Or even worse in the documents and settings folder under application data with crazy profile folder names that appear meaningless. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: Does Any One Know Where
Mozilla really needs to stop that. I think the folder name is a hash of the profile name, but still.

Re: Does Any One Know Where
I took a disk once to a place called "Data Doctors". It turned out the disk was not hard crashed, but they have data recovory services available to get what can be gotton for the disk. While the store I visited was in Dallas, they are a somewhat national chain. It can cost though. More for fast and hard crashes, but you do get the data back.
That brings up another point. Can to boot your computer from another (New?) harddrive? Use the old broken one as a secondary drive. You may be able to see Files and directories on it and recover DOGA files and other data that may be there. |
Re: Does Any One Know Where
It is a horrible feeling when one cannot trust ones own computer. Everytime I start it now I sit here with a fear that its going to BSOD me again.
In my case the HD is fine. The problem was caused when XP was updated following the installation of new Nvidia drivers after I unistalled Norton and then installed and then uninstalled AVG. I think now that the problem is a conflict between the latest XP security update and Nvidia's latest 91.31 drivers. After the complete system restore the very last thing I did was install the new Nvidia drivers. Today the PC has worked flawlessly until XP did a security update. Following the reboot, crash city. It even crashed on a safemode reboot. Following that I was given the option to restore to previous last known good configuration and did so. I have since rebooted again with no problems. Which brings me back to its a horrible feeling knowning that you cannot trust your own computer. Very scary. |
Re: Does Any One Know Where
You should go back to the previous version of the drivers, which I think was 81.98 (?).

Re: Does Any One Know Where
Well everything seems to be working now. Must have just been an oddity. I will know more when I reboot. If it crashes, then R13 would be correct.
