OT: Aaaaaarrrrrggghh.......

My Hard-drive went out, and it doesn't look like I can save ANY of the #@$%&ing files I have. I think I've lost EVERYTHING !!!

Ouch!

There are places that specialize in data recovery. Of course, they want money. No idea how much, though.

I had to learn this lesson the hard way as well. Now I routinely backup my data from time to time, and carry a mirror image of my most important files on a USB key.

There are also some cheaper shareware-type programs that might work.

The HD failure strikes again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Most likely a heat issue took it out. Thats what killed mine a while back. I feel for you man, I wish there was something I could do.

Can't vouch for them, but you could give these folks a call
http://www.vantagetech.com/
or
http://www.harddriverecovery.org/
and get a quote.

It looks like the Canadian Hard Drive Curse™ has turned its attention south of the border.

I feel your pain BlackKnyght. I too lost all the data on my hard drive just a few months ago (though due equally to my stupidity as computer error). It hurts.

As I used to ask users, who I had to support on a backup program, who hadnt used it, or used it regularly...

When did you data become important to you? About 5 secs after you lost it...

Yep. Of course there's also the inverse law of data failure: the more backups you have the less you end up needing them! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

I have..mm..25 backups. Never needed to use any of them. (they aren't all CURRENT, of course- I just keep the old ones for a while).

Re: OT: Aaaaaarrrrrggghh.......

Well I know that NONE of my back up disks worked when I went to re-install software and files. If not for the second HD having most of my files, albeit way out of date, I don't know what I would have done. Most likely recommended that no one EVER BUY A GOD DAMN HP PRODUCT! Their customer service is rancid beyond comparission. I will bet that the little indian guy who "helped" me to destroy my computer laughed his can barely speak english *** right off. "Ah you stupid American!"

Out sourcing tech support to another country is a bad bad bad idea.

You'll get far better tech support on the #spaceempires IRC channel...

I recommend the freeware version of SyncBack for all your important data backup needs. For creating a functional system back up, Acronis True Image is highly recommended at the DSLReports Software Forum. Also suggested there is freeware tool DriveImage XML which requires XP or Windows 2003.

I'm partial to Norton Ghost if you can spring for the second external hard drive. If you can spring for the 2nd internal hard drive go RAID mirror and hope the case doesn't catch fire! I've recovered my system in 23 minutes using Ghost!
