Upgrading durring production?Did I miss a chapter?
OK, I'm a new player--have skimmed the FAQ's 4-5 times and read them through 2 times, searched this site (maybe I'm searching the wrong words...) but when I was reading the suggested SE4 Dubious Strategy guide my eye caught on this 'post':
Quote:
IF it IS possible (/hopes so!) it should be in the FAQ-but doesn't seem to be (so I doubt it was missed). All imput will be welcomed--thanks in advance! PS - what do you think of my avatar? 8) made you look close didn't I?? lol. Edit SilverRat- spacing in title removed 'T' in chapter. |
Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
I think that must be a mistake in the FAQ - in SE4, you cannot upgrade ships under construction. You can, however, upgrade facilities under construction (sadly you can only do so for all facilities in your empire at once, using the upgrade all button; you cannot selectively upgrade facilities under construction AFAIK), and you can also retrofit ships that have already been built...

You definitely cannot upgrade the hull on an already built ship. So this entry is partly badly worded and partly wrong. |
Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a chaper?
Ed Kolis - it isn't a FAQ mistake - it was in the suggested reading for new members list: The SE4 Dubious Strategy download.
I kind of figured it was too good to be true, but I wanted to make sure, in case it was possible. Thanks for the input. |
Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
I'd like to modify Ed's statement just a little. While you cannot selectively upgrade facilities, you can hit the upgrade button, then go through the individual queues and remove the upgrades you don't want to follow through with. Yes, it can be tedious, but I've done it under circumstances where the budget was tight.

Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
Long ago, you used to be able to edit ship designs while they were in build queues IF the design was still a prototype (no full ships completed yet). This was patched out in one of the SE4 Classic patches, presumably after the Dubious Strategy Guide was completed.

Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
You can upgrade facilities on a planet in small batches if you want.
To do this, you must first save the upgrades as saved queues. Upgrade facilities at planets with 1, 2, 3 or more facilites and save each as a saved queue. Then you can upgrade 1, 2, 3, or more facilities at a time on planets with large numbers of facilities by using the saved queues. |
Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
What's the procedure for saving (and using) those queues?
|
Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
To save construction queue:
1) Open the "Set Construction Queue" window by clicking the Build Queue button (or key Q). 2) Click the "Upgrade" button and add the desired upgrades to the queue. 3) Click the "Fill Queue" button and then "Add Type". 4) Type in a name and click "OK". To use a previously saved queue: 1) Open the "Set Construction Queue" window by clicking the Build Queue button (or key Q). 2) Click the "Fill Queue" button and then click on the name of a previously saved queue. |

Yes, I wondered about the 'Prototype' classification shown on the design new ship screen, it is a shame that it has been patched out - it would be a great thing to be able to do.

Re: Upgrading durring production? Did I miss a cha
It was exploitative; you could build ships with technology you do not have at the beginning of the consturction cycle just by editing the design after the new item is researched and before the ship is completed. To do that legitimately, you have to expend more resources on maintenance and retrofit costs after the ship with old tech is built. When you could edit unbuilt designs in queues, this legitimate mechanism was subverted.

Hmm..I suppose I can understand that. Still a bit of a shame though.
