Beware the dark regions of deep space...

Just when you thought it was safe to travel the stars again...

...along comes the Space Kraken...

I was bored tonight, so I did up a few Space Monsters for thr hell of it, and figured I'd share them here. Let me know what you think, okay?

(Note: Updated the Space Monsters attachment to include the ones shown and more. Total now stands at 16. Here's the link to download them - BK Space Monsters v1.16 )

Oooh, nice? Does it have a name? In case you didn't know, forum tradition dictates that all giant mutant cybernetic radioactive monster battlesquid have Irish names.

Unless you are going for a full shipset, you should forward that on to Rollo, or whoever is running Devnullmod these days: The SPace Monsters are always looking for new blood.

In another sector, the terrifying Space Recluse is seen ripping apart ships and devouring their crews...

You know, it just occured to me - I know there are mods with Space Monsters in them, but damned if I know which they are. I've never played against them, only heard of them.

Which mods include the Space Monsters, and how "dangerous" are the wee beasties?

Combat Wombat's Invasion! has monsters.

Devnull mod has monsters...and they are very difficult to beat if you start out close to them. Just a handful of these monsters can wipe out an entire fleet of ships.

Be careful against them!

Re: Beware the dark regions of deep space...

Adamant also has mosters, though I think Devnull was the first mod with monsters...
Supposedly there will be monsters (well, Sithrak) in SE5 that not only attack random empires like in MOO2, but can be summoned through the use of some sort of dimensional portal, though that's rather old information from an IRC chat and that feature might have never made it in... I think it did make it in though (at least the attacking part, who knows about the summoning?) since the Sithrak do appear in a recent SFI newsletter http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I wonder if one of the victory conditions is to use said dimensional portal to attack the Sithrak homeworld and defeat them, ala MOO2? Man, if that's the case, it does provide an interesting choice (when you research the portal, do you use it to enslave the other races under Sithrak dominion or take the fight to the Sithrak?) but it would still be more than a bit derivative http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
Just as long as in SE6 we don't find that the Sithrak have become the New Abbidons setting up the Abbidon Senate and wiping out the Eee, Praetorians, and Phong because the world you attacked wasn't really their homeworld and they got really pissed and assembled the Green and Black Fleets to enslave the entire galaxy and they create the Reaper Virus which becomes sentient and rebels against them and a bunch of other crap in a novella disguised as a game manual http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Okay - Admittedly not as scary or creepy looking as the others, but it was inspired by Saberhagen's "Berserkers" saga. Gigantic war machines that exist for one purpose, and one purpose only - destroy all life in the universe....

THEY just might scare the bejesus out of you... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The Sithrak are just another race in SE 5. And the 'plain' space monsters aren't implemented (yet). Hopefully they will be in a patch, or in SE 5 Gold when he gets around to that.

These are awesome! Very scifi. These monsters sound like they come from a classic 1960's scifi adventure story.

Hey, another Saberhagen fan.

His Dracula is quite simply superior to all others I've seen and his 'The Frankenstien Papers' (I think that's the name) is an excellent re-adaption of the Frankenstien story.

Love that worldship pic. Really cool. I think you're well on the way to making a full shipset out of these.

Yes, Devnullmod was the first to include monsters, and they are ugly SOBs. One of them just wanders around the galaxy, randomly devouring planets...

No intergalactic (I always suspect people who use that word lack even a rudimentary grasp of the math involved) King Kong?

sweet, what did you make them in? how many polys do they have (are they useable for se5?)

Re: Beware the dark regions of deep space...

Glad to see the new Space Monsters were so well recieved. When I began fiddling around with the idea of new monsters it was just a sort of a "frenzied obsession" I had to get out of my head and onto the screen. I didn't know whether they were of any interest to anyone else or not.

You know, noone that has said anything on this issue has actually tried any real conversions with the game engine... It's all speculation.

I have. The images come out as cartoon looking. It is next to impossible to texture them because of the way DOGA handels vertices. The result is either a very cartoony looking image or an image with no edges.

Wow, thanx so much AT. Means a lot coming from you.

One more addition to the Space Monsters to add, though not a monster. Just for kicks I went and compiled a list of Japanese movie monster names and put them all together in a design name text file. The greater majority of these names are from the "classic" Toho monster movies, but a few are from other Japanese works, including Ultraman. Hope you enjoy them.

All the pics appear to be temporarily AWOL. They're all replaced with "We're doing a little work right now, your image will be back soon" messages from Photobucket. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Looking forward to seeing them though.

the big problem is the massive ammounts of poligons DOGA leaves you with. and 90% of them are unneeded and hidden.
the tricky bit is cutting all these un wanted pollys out.

Strategia_In_Ultima September 14th, 2006 09:24 AM

Re: Beware the dark regions of deep space...

Problem is you can't manipulate polygons directly in DoGA, you'd have to export it and edit it in another program.

Oh, and the pics are back! Checking.....

Me like! Me like mucho! Fantastic work! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
