Any way, I have a feeling I've tried a demo of this some time ago. I have seen the trailer before, at least. I don't like the idea of fantasy units fighting against tanks, or even existing in the same world, so I'll pass. |

PS. You were surely playing with the BETA. This demo is totally different, everything has been upgraded since then greatly. |

Betrayal at Krondor, Beyond Good and Evil, Dungeon Keeper, King of Dragon Pass, Mount & Blade, Ultima IV, ADOM and Dungeon Crawl and few other free games. Oh, and a remake of Star Control 2. I have only finished Beyond Good & Evil and ADOM. I uninstalled Morrowind a while ago, and it never caught me. And I never tried Neuromancer, and never got underground in The Bard's Tale. And I didn't bother reinstalling Fallout (1) after it vanished in some accident or other; I thought I had gotten pretty far before the accident, and I didn't want to play through all of it again. There's also the Dungeon Siege I never bothered installing because I wasn't interested. In other words, no, I didn't try the demo of M&M: Dark Messiah. And I borrowed my HoMM1 cd to someone and haven't gotten it back yet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |

450 Mb for a demo is nothing in 2006. There are lot of games with ~1Gb demos...but I guess it is not important at all, since our internet connections are very fast..well at least for most of us. I was downloading this demo with 2Mb/sec with my 6mbit dsl line [however it is not capped, so basically it is a 24mbit dsl line] from a local gaming site. It was downloaded in a few mins. If the gamershell link is not fast enough, try to look for a d/l link in your country, those are usually not capped. PS. Dark Messiah is a fantasy "FPS". It looks very good, I might buy it actually, but hell knows, since I have lot less time to play with games in these months, and it will be even worse. I want to focus on Doms 3. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Quote:

Re: OT: Heroes of Annihilated Empires demo
I've played a bit more.
I must say that the AI is awesome in this game. You can play the Undead and the Elven faction in the demo. I've played a skirmish with 3 AIs. I teamed up with one. I was playing undead, just like my AI teammate. The 2 enemy AIs were with the Elves. Our asses were kicked badly. One of the AI players attacked with a huge force. I am not kidding the AI moved like 200 elvish archers, unicorn, griffins and other troops to my base in the same time. It seems that the AI is only attacking when its recruited huge amount of troops. My AI teammate was also owned by the other AI player. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif I gotta play more with the Undead, becuase I've made lot of mistakes, even my AI teammte did much better then me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif The MP will be also awesome. RTS fans must buy this. I've just pre-ordered the game in this minute. |
Re: OT: Heroes of Annihilated Empires demo
This game will need a Random Map Generator and/or Editor. And if the maps are large enough... I will buy this game. The larger the maps the better! |

Yes a random map generator would be nice... not to mention the editor. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif |
Re: OT: Heroes of Annihilated Empires demo
I've downloaded this demo last week-end.
I found the game totally boring. I only tried the campaign mission and it was basically just learning how to use the (ultra powerful) few spells they give us. All units they give us are as good as dead at the next battle. Eventually, I got to the point where I could start building a base in the usual rts fashion but two seconds after I got started, the undead started to come in unending waves, single handedly killed by my ranger with a sword. And that's hundreds of undeads. Eventually, I became bored of killing undeads coming from every direction and having my base ruined for the sixth time. If only it had included a tutorial of some sort. And the graphics are so zoomed out... nice zoomed out graphics are easy, and the story and dialogue feel cheesy. |

The AI is excellent. Frankly this is the best AI what I've seen so far. It is attacking with huge number of troops endlessly. I don't know if its cheating or not, but this was on normal diff. level. Try a skirmish game against the AIs. Its hardcore. I think that the game will require some balance. The Elven faction seems more powerful then the Undead. I've played 3 skirmish games so far, and the Elven AI steamrolled he Undead AI in all games. Mass archers just killed off the hundreds of skeletons and ghosts, and at that point the UD AI had no stronger troops only some mummies. Anyways this game will be excellent for both SP and MP. |
Re: OT: Heroes of Annihilated Empires demo
You do realize that giving the AI huge resource bonuses, thus allowing hordes of units, isn't exactly "excellent AI" - it's the same thing that most strategy/wargames have done to make things more difficult for the human players, and is generally simply considered cheesy. |

Anyways I can beat the Galciv2 "superAI" on the hardest setting without any problems, but the HoAE normal AI is better, its much harder to beat. Now I was playing more with the Undead, and I can beat the AI now on normal. However, Ive never ever seen this in any other strategy game, that the AI is moving huge forces in the same time. In fact listen to this. My AI teammate has attacked the enemy AI from 2 different directions. [front and rear attack] Not to mention that my teammate upgraded the skeletons 5 times so they were at maximum level. [3x def bonus and 2x att bonus] It was moving fliers and siege weapons with the core skeleton infantry. I am really impressed. SP fans will like this. Also imho the MP part will be awesome, which is very important for me. The whole system is excellent. |
Re: OT: Heroes of Annihilated Empires demo
I just downloaded the game and played two skirmirshes.
The AI really seems to know what it is doing, as I have seen it split it's forces to attack from two sides at once. Good thing he send his zombies (the hard hitting troops) the usual way, but sent his fast running mummies around my base to attack from behind and kill my workers - excellent. But what about those heroes? It says that they will be back after 30 minutes, but I have the feeling that I played more than 30 minutes and never regained control over the hero. Bug maybe? |

Btw 2 interesting things. 1. The AI surely doesnt know the map. It is scouting with small armies. 2. The AI is using his resource gatherers very well. I suspected as my Undead ally AI has made like 40 necros to harvest stone, and hes also upgraded all his mines to the maximum. I must say that I am impressed about the AI, and this is just a demo, I guess patches can make it even better if it will be needed. Damn I can't wait to play MP. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif PS. I just had a crash with an error message. I had like 800 skeleton warriors, 250 mummies and some other units. I was building up a great invasion force. Maybe that was the problem. If this gonna happen once more, I will register on the official forum to post about it. |
