SETI - Off Topic

For a while now, I've been letting the 'unused' clock cycles on my PC's be used for SETI@home - a distributed computing project based around SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intellegence). I recently found a group (at SETI@home) called Space Empires and have contributed my 'results' to that group.

I suspect that many people that visit this board may have an interest in SETI and would like to participate. If you're interested, read about it at:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

The software (downloadable from that site)that does this is pretty cool and you may be the lucky one to find a SETI signal and get your name recorded in the history books! I thought it was pretty cool that I could do my small part in this search. If you decide to do it, consider putting your results into the Space Empires group...

I've got 350 work units done! Been using a P2 266 and a P2 400 together for a while.

And for the competitive among you, just returning ONE work unit boosts you up to the 32nd percentile. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Yep, almost 1/3 of people who signup never return a work unit. Then there are the people you'll see in the lists on the site who have done 100 or more, and some thousands of work units. My brand spanking new Duron 800 takes about 10 hours of undistracted processing time to do one work unit. I can't imagine the home networks that some of these high-volume people contributing from "home" must be using. They must have banks of Athlon or P III machines hooked up and dedicated to SETI@HOME.

I have been doing this since May 1999 I will check it to see the number packets I have done.

Ok I checked, 900 packets done.

My old pc took 24 hours to do one packet, My 450 takes 13.5 hours.
I run it in the background at work. So when I am off, it runs 24 hours not stop.

I want to get 1000 by the end of this month.

Check out some of the gov area's that is running it:
US AIR FORCE 8 people
United Nations 30 people
US Navy 346 people
USMC 315 people

here is a quote from the Us INS Office in NM (the home of the ufo crash)
"The US Immigration Service...Who better suited to search for aliens?? This group was started by those in INS in the Roswell/Artesia New Mexico area, right by the "Roswell Experience" site, but, of course, it is open to all who wish to help us."

Sun Microsystems runs it on alot of their Internet servers in the background. they are a customer of ours. They are also a sponsor of the project.
IBM --sponsor and has 977 people running it.
HP---sponsor and has 500 people running it.
Microsoft also runs it.

Guess it would take me a while to catch up. I only have 57. Go ahead and laugh, my old 166 clunker does the best it can.
Who seriously thinks that they'll find something though? (Or if they do, that it won't be mysteriously ignored)

Has anyone founded a 'Space Empires' group yet? If someone founds a group, then SE IV players could pool their contributions and compete with other Groups for total work units completed, processing time, etc. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Or maybe we should be more general and found a Shrapnel Games group? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Actually, there's more than ONE Space Empires Seti team. Both of these teams are small enough as it is. We need to consolidate! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Can teams be merged? Can we persuade the members of one to join the other?

It never ceases to amaze me how naive and guillible some people can be http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Like our control-obsessed federal government is ever going to really allow you access to information of such potentially explosive importance. This are the same feds who still refuse to de-classify information from nearly a hundred years ago. Get a clue, folks, you're being duped.

There's no way they can block all the inbound signals from every direction around the planet, and no way to control the distribution of the information.

The trouble with most conspiracy theories is that they require a level of competence that human institutions have never demonstrated.

This has nothing to do with the government. The radio telescope, the researchers who wrote the programs, the sponsors, the computer systems, and everything else are academic or private. Unless the political order in this country is a whole lot different than it has seemed all of my life, there's no G-man approving scientific research projects or filtering the data stream in and out of universities... yet! Not that there aren't a lot of G-men who'd like to appoint themselves to the job! What's 'explosive' about a signal from an alien civilization? Will it let you over-throw the Govt? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif I think they're much more worried about people learning how to make explosives and/or firearms in their own homes than they are about a bunch of geeks competing in the SETI easter egg hunt.

Yes, there are 2 'cause I created the second one before I completely checked it out. I am now using the Space Empires (with a space) instead of SpaceEmpires. That is the only other Space Empires group I've seen..

Hmmmm...maybe rename it to something the average user might pick up on easily...like 'Space Empires Forum' or something. Who are the other guys, anyway? They might not even know about this most beloved game. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

If you read the group info (for Space Empires) it talks about SE3. I haven't noticed anyone's numbers going up recently so they may not even be active. (I'm RogerD in that group.)

I personally don't care where we put 'em. If someone wants to create a group with a little more detail (I'm not sure why), feel free and maybe I'll put my results in there (I have over 1400 now).

Re: SETI - Off Topic

I'd just like to start by saying this is my opinion right or wrong. I believe that the Gov't, at least Cells of it, know all about Aliens. They've seen them, they have their crafts, they know. The can Easily monitor All transmissions in and out of earth. I believe that the current "Project Disclosure" team is being totally honest and that SETI and NASA are either in the Fooled employee or "In the Know" Groups, with almost ALL of them just having been fooled.

Anyways, I know I'm a crackpot... heh yeah right. I would suggest anyone wanting to know what's Really up going to http://www.cseti.org/

Of course this is just an opinion, an Informed one, but just an opinion.

I checked out the website you mentioned and read some of the key beliefs of those folks. The most interesting was this one:

They believe that we have been studying alien technology for such a long time that we now have all the technology we need to end poverty, world hunger and disease but that the government is hiding this technology.

... I'll let other folks comment on this. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

My reaction too raynor, until you read WHY the people in the know is keeping this from us. It's not pretty, but it makes perfect sense.

With all our petty squabbling for power will we ever be able to get ahead?
