Map + Mod File Editor & Syntax Scheme [Freeware ]

I recommend Ulli Meybohms Freeware Editor "Proton" v3.2eng for Windows.

It's freeware, does not need to be installed - just unzip, start the .exe.

It can write files in UNIX format as the DOM mod files are, it's available in english and I have done a syntax scheme for it.

The scheme is still in the works, so it's quite simple up to now. If there's interest in it and I can figure out more of the syntax, I'll try to do a updated version for Dom3. Sadly documentation for the .sch files is non-existant.

I'll upload the latest version to my website in the next days, stay tuned.

hope this is helpful
A.

Update: 10-22-06

The editor is now available for download !!

It's freeware, like free beer.
It's in english.
It runs under every kind of Windows.
It doesn't need to be installed.
It puts only 1 entry into the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\meybohm\proton\)

I have added syntax highlighting for Dom3 mod (.dm) and for .map files, full range of commands is supported!!

WARNING: This is not longer true for Dominions versions 3.16+ ! Instead of fiddling around with the poorly documented Proton features, I might to a syntax colouring file for Notepad++ if I find the time and need ...

What is "syntax scheme" means? Also this utility is good to edit the modding related files? Am I correct?

@Arralen
Sounds great!

@DF
I believe that he is referring to syntax "formatting". For example, making comment lines green, or making strings in quotes appear red, italicized and bolded.

Syntax editors are nice for making code/script easier to read for the coder.

There's always good, ol' Emacs. I'd probably be able to whip up a DomMod mode for it with syntax highlighting if anyone's interested.

My favorite editor, I would want a dommode for it!

I'll look into it when I get a chance, then.

Here's the initital version of dommod-mode.el, an Emacs major mode for editing Dominions mod files.

At the moment it does little more than syntax highligting and only of the Dominions 2 keywords at that, but I intend to add some movement and navigation functionality to it as well. Eventually. In time. Some day. Probably.

Just in case anyone wonders why I haven't uploaded anything - had to resolve some legal issues first, but I think can distribute the editor without trouble.

Atm I'm working on an updated syntax scheme for Dom3 mods.

Nice, found a problem with the syntax though, it turns green between " marks. And it should. The problem is that it turns black after a line break even if you havn't closed the quotation marks. Since Line breaks are used if you want a line break ingame that shouldn't happen.

Gnnnnagnnagnag ... hey folks, I haven't written that thing .. there isn't anything I could do about such issues, as it isn't opensource. Not that I know enough about C++ to have any hope to be able to fix them ... Nice to see that at least someone finds my work on the syntax schemes useful, though http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

So, are none of these tools that might help an utter newbie at modding? Is a text writing and sprite editing enough? Nice.

Thread necromancy again! :P

It's pretty easy to come up with syntax coloring for your favorite text editor, be it TextPad, Kate, Emacs, or any other that allows custom syntax coloring.

All you need is a Text Editor and a graphics editing program, yes.
