Please change the \"e\" shortcut
Whithout any confirmation box even if you have not played in the turn, having a shortcut for end turn accessible in one key press is not a good idea I think. Especially when the key is "e", neighboring on the keyboard "d" for buying province defense and "r" for recruitment.
Please change the end turn shortcut to shift + e or cntrl + e or something like this, hard to type by error. Staling a turn because of a typo is not fun. |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
Sounds reasonable

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I really wish that the keyboard shortcuts could be externalized into a config file so that they could be reassigned to suit the individuals preference.
|
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
as a temporary workaround you could use remapkey.exe
an old and free microsoft tool |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I second this. I've already inadvertantly ended some turns prematurely. I'd also like to see the host dialog brought back for single player, since I do my turns in bits and pieces, but I think that's wishfull thinking.
|
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I also would like to have an option to see the host dialog in single player; I'm so used to hitting end turn and then exit in order to quit, nearly every time I want to stop playing I end up hosting the turn instead. I've also hit "e" a couple times by accident, and that's no fun either.

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I'll add my hope for this as well. Remapping the key (via remapkey.exe, etc) isn't a very good option since you then have the 'e' key remapped for _every_ application until you restore the original mappings. Horrible for a blitz where you're doing other things while waiting on others to take their turns. Even just within Dom3, you'd have to remember which key was switched with the 'e' for sending messages, renaming commanders, casting wish, etc. |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
You could use AutoHotKey. I'm not sure if it works on OS other than Windoze, but it can be used to remap all of your keys, and you can even map a key to "Pause", which makes the software temporarily inactive (and thus you are able to type normaly) until the next time you click it.
Ofcourse, this is only a workaround, a patch allowing remapping will be better. |

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
if youre playing single player and accidentally end your turn before youre ready, you can quickly close the application before the hosting process finishes and you wont stale the turn youll just have to redo what youve done from the start

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
Yeah, I liked Dom2 system more too. It was kind of logical to have end of orders command ('e') separate from hosting. I would often invoke 'e' just to commit my current orders, then think and maybe get back to correct some orders. Hosting from a separate screen was kind of cool - hard to do it by mistake...

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I think even shift-e is problematic, as R (research) and S (search) are still right next to it. Alt-e or maybe even something different like ctrl-return would be much better.
Of course, bringing back the Dom2 hosting dialogue would be the best solution. |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
CTRL+e would be best
|
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
Happened to me once, too. Damned annoying.
Reminds me of how Silent Hunter III has Enter fire torpedoes. There were tonnes of accidentally launched eels until a mod changed it to Ctrl+Enter. |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
It should be noted that shift+e already is a commander order: Break Seige. At least one of the two should bechanged. If caps lock is on and you try to break a seige... I doubt it will be long before that happens in a few TC/IP blitz games...

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I still think it's more the auto-hosting that's the problem, rather than the keyboard shortcut. Removing the auto-hosting means it doesn't matter if you accidentally hit "e"...
Of course, I might be in the minority (Dom2 players too set in their ways to change them when tired/distracted/mindless/insane) but my impression was that the change was because the turn-hosting screen was confusing for new folk; I agree with this, and in fact welcomed the change when I heard about it, but in practice I think it would be better to make the hosting screen more intuitive (maybe replace the "host" button with a "process orders" button or something... There are probably better choices!) |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I prefer the "one click" hosting. I think because it plays into the less clicks = streamlined user interface idea. I can certainly see where some folks might be put off by it though. I still find myself in a sense of shock when I first hit the end turn button and don't see the host turn screen simply from habit. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I can still remember all that "It sucks to have to click another button on another screen just to do my SP turn! In every other game there's an 'end turn' button!!" ..
But the problem is not the button, the problem (if there is any) is the accidently pressed shortcut key. I would suggest it gets removed. We have a button to get the next turn. Simple as that! |

Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
I don't care what it will be changed to, but it definetely need to be changed. Its righ next to "r" key. I like to play in the dark, and I almost afraid to touch keyboard now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Either "e" need to go, or at least some prompt needs to be added to it. |
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
A prompt, especially if we could press enter to skip it, would be great. It's is probably more work than just changing they hotkey though. Either way, Illwinter, FIX IT!
|
Re: Please change the \"e\" shortcut
Change it to something easy to remember, like ctrl-alt-F4-delete.
