What do you think of the game?
So just want to know what everyones thinking of the game so far. I like it. Just wish the patches would start flying out. Not to mention the mods. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: What do you think of the game?
I'm enjoying the game a lot more recently as finally such dedicated patching is addressing many items that were sort of put on the backburner for a bit.
The first patch is due on the 16th! You can try the Balance Mod, info and download here: http://www.captainkwok.net/balancemod.php |
Re: What do you think of the game?
I quite like it, actually. It grows on me the more I play. I really, really like the way ships act in tactical combat under computer control. I really feel like I can trust them to stay out of danger and make good use of their movement and weapon ranges. Also, with the Kwok patch the AI is far more aggressive.
The interface is growing on me, too. Overall I think with the fixes that are promised the game will be excellent. I think the majority of people who are pissing and moaning aren't giving the game concept and execution a chance, warts and all. Just my $0.02. |
Re: What do you think of the game?
i enjoy the game more and more with each time i play it.

Re: What do you think of the game?
When all the features work and the A.I is better.SEV will be the best 4X game on the market.

Re: What do you think of the game?
I’m still not happy with it and I didn’t plan to pick it up until the patches addressed some of the issues. Then I read an argument that went something like this:
When the earlier versions of SE came out didn’t you by them buggy and all? Why yes I did, when SE3 and SE4 came out I was one of the first in line. Even with all the flaws I accepted it and played till the patches brought it up to speed. So I bought the darn thing and every time I start getting frustrated with the bugs I look at the art on the box and sip some coffee or tea. By the way Captain Kwok your mod is excellent, my two older children and I have a game running in our spare time. |
Re: What do you think of the game?
I have been impressed despite some bugs I have had, oh and getting use to the new research system "Ten levels of Space yards before I can put them on bases http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif"

I kind of thought this forum was one where we respected each others' opinions, agreed to disagree and left it at that. |

It just bugs me that *some* people (not you) come off on this and other forums as whiny, self-indulgent brats. Yes, the game has problems. Yes, it probably shouldn't have been released in this condition. All I'm saying is look at the design underneath - scrape the barnacles and rough edges away and I believe there's quite a game just waiting to come out beneath the surface. But I feel too many people want to do a point-by-point comparison to SE4 and judge the game as an 'evolution' rather than a 'new game experience.' On those merits, yes, the game will probably disappoint. But taken as a game by itself, with no history, and what it tries to accomplish, and the lack of boundaries it refuses to set on a player's strategies and ideas, it is a work of art, in my opinion. And that's the whole point: IN MY OPINION. |
Re: What do you think of the game?
woohoo!
Three cheers for whiny, self-indulgent brats! (to borrow a phrase from Tex's post above) My attitude is, it's my money. I earned it the hard way, "by the sweat of my brow". And whether or not to spend it on a given product is my choice. I'm not really a cheapskate. In the last 6 weeks, I've purchased Weird Worlds and pre-ordered Rising Star. But thus far, SE5 does not impress me as being worth my money. If feeling that way, and saying so, makes me a "whiny self-indulgent brat", then so be it. Three cheers for whiny, self-indulgent brats! |
Re: What do you think of the game?
At this point SEV isn't really a working game. It is a work in progress that promises to be a game. I'll buy it in a few more months when the promises turn in to actions. Until then I'm still enjoying the use of a working game called SEIV.

Re: What do you think of the game?
I'm enjoying it. The patch should be out early this week which will be great too.
|
Re: What do you think of the game?
I only have the demo, but I just don't know if I can get past that cluttered main screen. I feel like I'm trying to play the game while looking through a slot. Yes, I will buy it, patch it, add mods etc. but please, give me that nice, clean SEIV look!

Re: What do you think of the game?
High rez mode helps a lot, since the fluff is a fixed size in pixels, but the view is rendered on the fly.
|
Re: What do you think of the game?
Can those three 'boxes' at the bottom of the screen be modded into pop-ups?
|
Re: What do you think of the game?
No, but you could make them partly transparent.
|
Re: What do you think of the game?
Okay, thanks, d*mn!

Re: What do you think of the game?
I spent the better part of the weekend playing 1.0.
Loving it, but its unplayable. The only reason I'm not disappointed is that technically I'm not "supposed" to have it, per Malfador. Today is the release day, the 16th. Thanks to Kwok and the other beta testers, I can see in the patch release notes that the issues I had over the weekend are now fixed in the soon coming patches. |
Re: What do you think of the game?
I just hope like in seIV (at least it hink thye did) they release what files the changed in patch so if they never touched techarea.txt I don't have to rework that file for my mod. I can't wait until the patch since all of the things that I had issues with have been fixed in it (at least they say they were).
OP: I think the game is great with a bit of modding just like SE:IV. Can't wait for map editor though so I can make my own galaxies. |
Re: What do you think of the game?
Agreed, I've been thinking about once the mods come out how to create several groups of "galaxies" that are not connected with one mod in each galaxy (B5 in one, ST another, SW another) then once they get to a certain lvl they can open warp points to the other galaxies and let the fun begin....lol
Another thought for a map editor was for a ST map split in half, one half has ST the other half has the mirror universe into it. I've always wanted to see the federation invade the mirror universe. lol |
Re: What do you think of the game?
I toyed with this idea also. It wouldn’t work unless you had a pre-agreed standard to base weapons and other tech from. Otherwise something like a Slice-Your-Ship-In-Half Beam from the Uber Mod would make Swiss cheese of all the other mods. Ok, maybe that is an extreme speculation but you get the idea. I mean don’t take me wrong! I think it is a great idea and I like it a lot! I have thought about it on and off since long, long, long ago. Problem is developing a “standard” that will allow B5 to have its goodies and Star Trek and so-on without giving one mod overwhelming power. Ship sizes, weapon ranges, can I stop now?
If memory serves right there was an attempt to create a “Cross-Over” mod; however, I have no idea what ever happened to it. I would speculate it died due to incompatibility. |
Re: What do you think of the game?
There are basically 4 ways to make such a "standard":
1. Have the same developer(s) work on all the paradigms (stealing terminology from Adamant to refer to the different genres of sci-fi http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) 2. Come up with some sort of "point system" where someone can "buy" goodies for their particular paradigm. So if I want to add Planet Killer Super Lasers to the Star Wars paradigm, I have to calculate how many points that would cost, taking into account reload rate, damage, tonnage, research cost, and a host of other factors to balance it with the Borg's regenerative armor, which uses a completely different set of parameters to determine its point value http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif 3. Do extensive playtesting! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif 4. Make everything the same just with different names and/or primary resources, ala Adamant or STmod http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif I personally think a combination of approaches 1 and 3 would work best... approach 2 is rather impossible to do properly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: What do you think of the game?
I agree with number one and three as you do too. The developers could agree that no weapon can surpass x damage, or y range, and a few other very “liberal” conditions for ship sizes, innate abilities, and so forth. Admittedly that would be just about as difficult as the point system but not as restrictive. The key, let me say that again, the KEY would be for every developer to compile a chart of every item and ability for review. This chart should (*cough*) allow for any Uber items to be spotted before play testing. The bright side to all of this is that once play testing has been started the rest should flow fairly smooth! That’s not the only bright side, think of all the people who don’t work on mods and all the fun they will have playing one of such a massive scope?
Right now I am struggling through creating a mod and I am sure that more than a few of the people who did mods will not want to after they see this formula hungry restriction happy beast! Let me edit in and say by Uber I am not talking about items that are in the scope of the actual movie, series, or whatever source. The Death Stars main cannon IS an Uber weapon! What I mean is something like making a hand phaser for Star Trek ground troops that is able to wipe out every unit on ground and space enemy with one shot, costs 1 mineral, takes 1 ton, and resists a kajelion damage! |
Re: What do you think of the game?
I do like it, but it was released in a pretty shoddy (sp?) state as far as games go. I picked it up in a store but knew what to expect. I feel bad for people who saw it without knowing it'd be in a less than ideal state.
