The Dominions IRC channel
Lads, if you want to play Blitz games [via TCP/IP] and chat about the game, join to the Dominions IRC channel. It is on the gamesurge network, and the room name is #dominions
See you there! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Server = irc.gamesurge.net

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Does anyone have or want to create a newbie page for this? Does the wiki have one? Something I can link to.
Something like this (which is really sloppy and needs redone) http://host.dom3minions.com/how-to.html |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
A very short guide that probably isn't enough:
IRC, or Internet Relay Chat, is complicated business. You need many things, and all must work right. First, you need a client. There are many. mIRC is one. I don't know any others. Some browsers have clients embedded into them; at least Opera has this functionality. I didn't now this when I started using IRC. You need to set up few things before you can connect. These include choosing a nick. Nick is a nickname, the name you use. I use Endoperez. Using the name you have here works. Your name might already be in use. Then you just have to choose another. Or add a ' after your name, like this Endoperez'. To connect to #dominions channel, you must first find a proper server. On mIRC at least, once you know that you want to find a Gamesurge server ( irc.gamesurge.net), things are pretty simple. From a drop-down list, choose Gamesurge. If everything works, you are then asked what channel you want to go to. Type in #dominions and press enter. Then you should be on the channel, and see all kinds of strange discussion. |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Yeah... I found it quite easy once I downloaded the IRC client. I use Colloquy on a Mac. Very easy.

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Try this link....
IRC://irc.gamesurge.net:6667 If it doesnt work in your browser then it should tell you why. Often it just means that you need to get an IRC program and in the options tell your bowser where its at. |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
If you don't want to download any clients, config them etc. you can also use the java based webchat of gamesurge.
http://gamesurge.net/chat/ First you simply load the page. [It will try to install the java application, so you must let the site to install it] You will find yourself in the "welcome" channel. You can change your name in the "change nick to" window. [bottom right corner in the java window] After this you simply type in /join #dominions -> this will connect you to the dominions IRC channel. This is a very simple and easy way to use IRC. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
mIRC is a commercial product ($30). I recommend instead Trillian. It can be found here:

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Well, you can use the trial version of mIRC.

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
I have been in this channel for 2 days now and it is quite useful for a noob like me.

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
For linux it tends to be already installed. Or at least, easily available in the software catalog for automated "select/install/configure".
Personally I go with IRCII altho irssi is becoming popular. |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Whu, hu wa? Already installed on Linux? Do you mean a default installation of Ubuntu Linux, per chance? Or maybe RedHat or SuSE?
I'm using XChat 2, myself. |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Any of the above actually. On a linux machine, its worth typing IRC just to see if it comes up before rushing to install something which might not be as stable. Just like on Windows its worth trying that IRC link just to see if your browser will put you into an irc window.

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
If you use Firefox, Chatzilla (an IRC program) is embedded with the program I believe.
Tools > Chatzilla |
Re: The Dominions IRC channel
Opera browser also has a built-in easy to use IRC client. It is OK for chatting, but lacks some of the features other IRC clients like mIRC have, eg. downloading is very hard.

With that link I think pretty much everyone here should give the channel a go at some point.

Re: The Dominions IRC channel
I second that, hopped on for the first time last night.
