Shipsets in SE5
I figure there are quite a few people out there who are thinking about making new shipsets for SE5, and some who want to convert old shipsets from SE4 to SE5. Of course, since SE5 is 3d now, converting shipsets requires the original model files, and they will likely have to be reduced in poly count quite a bit.
I, like many others, use Wings3d and am too cheap to own a copy of 3D Studio. SE5 seems to use an unusual format for models, one that Wings3d doesn't export to. I'm hoping to get some discussion going here that will eventually lead to some solutions to the Wings3d issue and help new and returning shipset makers find thier footing in the world of SE5 shipbuilding. |
Re: Shipsets in SE5
Ed Kolis has made an .x exporter for wings. I'm sure he stop by and tell you were it is for download. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Save it somewhere then use the Install Plugin command in Wings (it's on the File menu) to install it. |
Re: Shipsets in SE5
I installed the plugin but it doesn't have the option to export x-files (dum de dum dum dum)

Re: Shipsets in SE5

Re: Shipsets in SE5
What version of wings are you using? It might only work with the dev version (0.98.35)...
|
Re: Shipsets in SE5
Whatever the latest version is... looks like 0.98.32a
So I need the beta version then? |
Re: Shipsets in SE5
Yeah, try 0.98.35... dunno what's so different but just give it a shot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: Shipsets in SE5
I have 0.98.26b. Guess I better update.

Re: Shipsets in SE5
Nope, still isn't working. Is it supposed to appear in the export options or is it a command?
|
Re: Shipsets in SE5
It's supposed to be a command under Export and Export Selected on the file menu...

Re: Shipsets in SE5
Thanks. I got it installed in the latest version of wings.

Re: Shipsets in SE5
Hello everyone,
I have been a lurker on all the SEV forums for a long time now. I first played SEII in about 1994 ish! Does that sound about right? Played SEIII but never got into SEIV. I think it due to 2 children coming along. However I would just like to say that for me, part of the enjoyment of a computer game now is the forums and fan base that gets built up over time. The SE fan base is a phonomenon, it's fantastic, mature and informative. It's worth the price of the game itself. I believe SEV will be, in time, THE yard stick by which many future 4X games are judged. Sure, at the moment there are issues, but don't you think it adds to the enjoyment of seeing something grow and expand into a lot more than when it was released. MM plants the seed, thank you, and the fan base waters it. AND what a fan base it has become!!! I have no doubts of the success of SEV, especially with you lot ploughing in idea after idea and I for one am looking forward to it. Where else can you pay £28 for what will be a good few years of entertainment, frustration, communicating and creating...... I'll get off of my soapbox now and ask a question. Would it be possible to create a ship in the Galactic Civilizations 2 ship editor textures an all and somehow export to SEV???? Thanks for listening. |
Re: Shipsets in SE5
What is the exact command line? I can't get it to show up in the menu.
EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. Turns out it didn't like it when I put it in the plugins folder, had to put in the root folder for some reason. Course I copied it to all the other folders in Wings just to make sure, so maybe it was one of those that did it... Whatever, it's working now anyway. |
