A little Something I Tried

1 Attachment(s)
I added a few Klingon ships to this file and tried to use them. They didn't work. So if any one wants to take a look at it, and see if they can tell me why they didn't work feel free.

I added X models for Frigate, Destroyer, Light Cruiser, Cruiser, Battleship, and Dreadnought.

I also added the 512x512 jpg images.

Re: A little Something I Tried

If someone could get the x models to work, I would love to see what they look like in the game.

There is a lot that a person must do in order to create a new set. Many images must be made and added. While I didn't go that far tonight, mainly because I just wanted to see what the models would look like, I could if they can be made to work.

Seems the code for your designs differs slightly from the game ships. They're both xfiles and will show in the x file viewer, but your designs do not register in the shipset viewer. The format for yours is different from what the game reads.

Re: A little Something I Tried

Atrocities, good news! Your ships are showing up in-game without changing your models at all. Bad news is that they are waaaaaay out of scale, laid-out on the wrong axis, and not taking your texture. But what the hell, its a start, right?

If you go into the _Ships_XFileClasses and increase the Starting Scale for each axis you'll be able to see your ships! (I can't remember by how much but try 10.0)

What modeler are you using and can it import an .x file?

Re: A little Something I Tried

I wasn't able to see them in the game. The images were the stock Amokie images. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Amokie model showed up when I made a battleship when it should have been a Vort'cha.

I used DOGA to export the models. I don't believe it can import them.

The problem with DOGA is texturing. The ships look like cartoons and the x-y-z axis's are always funky. I was hoping to get some help on this.

I still may be able to give you a hand.

First, I need to apologize, I forgot that I had run a batch conversion on the files - .x to .x.

Attached is a zip that you can put into your mod folder.
Run a quickstart as the Abbidon and you'll see your battleship in place of their frigate.

I'll do some research into DOGA and get back to you...

Hey AT, I looked at your models, they are nice. Really nice.

I loaded them into 3D Action Reducer to see if I could reduce the poly count, but it didn't do much.

Might I suggest you try a simple model in a different program, like Anim8or? That's what I use for my humble modeling needs. I export the models as .obj (this format seems to keep the texture info better) I then load the model into LithUnwrap and save it as a .x

anyways, the model meshes are very nice. keep up the fantastic work.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Dont you mean Action 3D Reducer?

Actually, the poly count on his ships aren't too far out of line with some of the stock sets.

Atrocities, I need to know what file types you can import into your workflow. I'm working on your set now to get it ready to use in-game. Do you want me to post the completed set or send you a pm when I'm done?

Re: A little Something I Tried

Yes Kana I actually meant Action 3D Reducer, I got it from The Game Creators site last Christmas. not a bad little program. it does seem to be specifically designed to reduce .3ds file poly counts, when I load .x it does not seem to reduce anything. Works with .3ds files though.

Re: A little Something I Tried

Please by all means post the set. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I appreciate any and all help. I have never tried to import anything into DOGA before. I think it has to go through Metasq and be converted into something DOGA can open first. Its been a very long time since I used Metasq so I am not sure even if I have it.

Here you go!

I set it up as a mod again for ease of testing. I also included the 3ds files so if you want to try another modeler you won't have to start over.

Oh, before I forget, great job on those ships!

[Edit] I forgot to mention, you might want to move the engine glow on the light cruiser. It is showing up in front of the ship and it appears that the game engine uses the glow as the pivot point for turning.

Re: A little Something I Tried

Thank you very much for helping me with this. I think I know whats wrong with the LC, it wasn't centered correctly before I exported it thus the pivit point is in the wrong location.

Re: A little Something I Tried

Well yes now they appear in the shipset viewer, but there must be something that needs to be done to get them in game as it still only shows the default 14 shipsets. I guess perhaps you could overwrite them to an original set.

The smaller hulls need to be smaller. As is they are bigger than a cruiser.

I actually thought about them being too small but it slipped my mind when I saw the format was different.

Take a look at how they look. Man scaling is off, textures look like crap, and glows are in the wrong place. BUT they are there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: A little Something I Tried

And that's the whole point! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Once you're able to view your own work in-game then you can look towards the little tweaks to perfect a set.

I've kept my mouth shut at the criticism that has been leveled at DOGA when it comes to making sets for SEV because I've been waiting for you to prove the naysayers wrong. Now that you have (!) I'll say that you should use whatever tool allows you to be creative. Having said that, though, I'd like to see you add an additional modeler to your workflow, something that you could use for those little tweaks mentioned earlier, which was why I included the .3ds files. Who knows, maybe once you get used to it you'll be able to do something from scratch. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Thanks a ton for your all your help. I would have considered this a lot cause without it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Now I know it can be done, I just have to work out the details and go from their.

I was thinking about giving wings3d a try.

I think that set looks great so far. Sure it needs some polish and touch up but considering all-and-all…

I got the shipset to work with inv pics added. You did a good job on the ships. Here is a screenshot of klingon and borg ships.

So basically DOGA works, but you will have to use a different program to make textures? And the scaling and glows are all SE5 game related tweaking?
