What do you listen to while playing Dom3?

I was wondering how many of you guys stick with the background music or put something of your own on. I've been listening to CDs of the Gladiator theme music, as well as a Wagner compilation called 'Twilight of the Gods'. Both seem very appropriate and go well with the game IMO.

So anyone got any more recommendations?

Somehow I feel that Blackmore's Night feel appropiate to this game. Don't know why... I also like the music of Nightwish when slaughtering big ugly Niefelheim Giants in my cuurent 1-1 MP game against my friend.

Hmm, I've listened to the game soundtrack which is excelent, Okami soundtrack which is fitting for Jomon and such and Laibach which is...well, it doesn't quite fit the era in most of the cases. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

I'm more one for listening to instrumental background music. Movie soundtracks usually. Currently I have the soundtrack of 'Das Parfum' in my cd player.

Other than that, Lord of the Rings or sometimes Apocalyptica.

Wagner never was one of my favourites, but you might want to try Orffs 'Carmina Burana', it has some very good pieces.

Re: What do you listen to while playing Dom3?

I dont tend to play music in the background. I like to listen to music when I play music (eyes shut, fantasizing my own videos).

But if I did, Id probably play Enya (when Im playing something like Pangaea or Jotunheim) and probably Enigma for most of the others. In a blitz game it might be Big Bad VooDoo Daddys in order to keep my energy level up.

The game's music http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
Dominion 3's music is actually really good, especially since there is more than one track (Yep, looking at you dom2), and I just haven't reached the point when I just have to replace it with something else.

Also, I don't have anything thematic to replace it with, so I'd just end up playing with AC/DC in the background O_o

Therion and folkearth, mostly therion since they have so many fitting songs. The album secret of the runes fits very well when playing vanheim and jotunheim and the crowning of atlantis works well when playing certain underwater nations.

If I were to show my age Id mention Yes and Uriah Heep. Particularly Uriah Heep has pieces which totally fit the RPG side of this game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Early Age:
The Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack. (Rest in peace, Basil Poledouris http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif )

Middle Age: Rock music. (I don't play too much Middle Age...feels too much like D2!)

Late Age: Nine Inch Nails.

Don't think I've ever listened to a game's music for more than 20 minutes or so, and have uninstalled / thrown away (console) games that didn't let me disable the music.

To anyone playing R'lyeh or another spooky enough nation, I recommend

Octane soundtrack by Orbital

mostly great soundtrack from bad thriller.
-------------------
You can't go wrong with Dead Can Dance, you get enough material for several nations.

Amateur celtic flavored bands, like polish Open Folk, Czech Dun An Doras, Tredrez Trio, Bal Kuzest, Ula Kapała.
Other folk bands like Stara Lipa.

Bauhaus. 'Bela Lugosi is dead', 'All we ever wanted was everything', 'In the night', 'King Volcano', 'The three shadows' part 1 and 2... + some XIII Stoleti pieces would make great Ulm:Black Forest soundtrack.

By the way: my last.fm site: http://last.fm/user/jazwiec
Last.fm is great if you're interested in discovering more music you like. And don't mind being pretty much glued to your computer. It lets you choose your own station, skip and ban tracks without limitations, tag them as 'loved' etc. Listen to your musical neighbors' music etc.
If you use Linux, I recommend using older client and OSS, otherwise it's very hard to run.

Re: What do you listen to while playing Dom3?

We're old. I love Uriah Heep. I once spent 24 hours straight listening to The Wizard. As it is, I've been listening to the opera channel (on cable). I did have some Johnny Cash on, but it was just a new CD I wanted to listen to. Some songs have come to mind though: Black Sabbath for Ermor Ashen Empire. For Mictlan (esp if you're playing with a vampire queen), the soundtrack to From Dusk 'till Dawn. Jethro Tull's Broadsword for pretty much the game in general. For R'lyeh Aboleths: definitely the trance channel, for Illithids: the theme to Resident Evil, for Dreamlands: Primus, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Tori Amos, early David Bowie, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, all at the same time, at slightly different volumes, preferrably in different rooms of a fairly large, empty house, away from each other, so that you can barely, but distinctly, hear each one. Put The (original) Shining on tv in one room, and the Wizard of Oz in another room, away from each other. Set the Dark Side of the Moon to coincide with the Wizard of Oz. The Shining should be set on a timer so it comes on just as Dorothy reaches the door to the Emerald City. It should be louder than the Wizard of Oz, but not so loud that it drowns other things out. When the Shining's over, replace with the Kubrick movie of your choice. Seek psychological help as needed.

Cradle of Filth and Gothminister fit well for Ermor and the likes imho http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Nightwish, Iced Earth and Therion have already been mentioned.

Freedom Call are so nicely clichee, they fit well for e.g. Marignon.

And Vader for Ulm http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif.

Inkkubus Sukkubus work well for Pangea, but mainly I just stick random play on Media Player. I occaisionally get some fitting music (Maiden's Two Worlds Collide just as a bunch of meteors strike the battlefield) but mainly, I get comedy (Click build castle, YMCA starts up...)

Either I listen to the radio, or the game music. I don't tend to play my own music while playing games.

Sorten Mulds... never heard of them but if you like the same music as I then they have to be good. I will look for them. Also Elvenkings music kinda fits Dominion3 I think.

Has anyone mentioned how appropriate it is to listen to the band "Dominion III" while playing "Dominions 3"?
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=84586280

They are abit too much metal for my tastes. Enjoyable to listen to but if I played them while I played the game if feels as if I would need to be playing Ermor or something like that.

Re: What do you listen to while playing Dom3?

games like Dominions make me want to listen to Tool, but in general i just listen to whatever music is in my CD changer, whi is generally some variant of rock. Big fan of hardcore metal and rap-rock hybrid stuff, or anything with guitars and drums where I can't understand a word the vocalist is vocalizing.

Anybody ever play the old Mac game Castles: Siege & Conquest? That was another game with a great soundtrack. Just a few simple songs that I could listen to forever.

Maybe if Illwinter had decided to go from Dominions II to Dominions III instead of Dominions 3. Maybe that was why. But Illwinter did have the name Dominions first.

hey that stuff's not bad.

I'd almost group them with The Gathering in terms of style, but a little more sinister.

They're named Dominion, while the game is named Dominions. There was a Dominion PC game published by Eidos way before Dominions, an even older manga series, and recently a card game by the same name.

And there are at least three different "Dominion" bands.

Blizzard, or Vivendi? I would be s bit surprised if the real (read: old) Blizzard would do something so far fetched. But Vivendi is a rabid and voracious beast that will consume all in its path.

Hear this song :) I think it's not a bad one and appropriate for Ulm/Man/Marverni. Maybe others for you, who knows :p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHIMiD0Sasc

Bid goddess rise from mists of memory
Rise the fair Cathain
In battle the equal of every man
And every lover disdained
Her heart was locked in a roundtower's keep
And none that gate could unbar
Till rose a prince in Ulster's east
His name was Conchobar

By day she taught him feats of arms
With sword and mace and bow
By night they kindled passion's fire
That only lovers know
So king and warrior thus were joined
In battles blood and love
The throne belonged to Conchobar
To Cathain the Witch's Glove

Dark rivals rose against the king
To challenge for his throne
All Ulster in the balance hung
Without its champion
A druid he sent to sacrifice
An offering to Cathain
A maiden fair with flaxen hair
Not once but two times slain
Two times slain

Ooh ooh ooh

But Cathain she would ne'r return
To fight the kings own war
Till druid did a virgin bring
To Conamara far
The fair Iona pure and sweet
On the self-same table lain
And by the Corclach's hungry stone
The innocent was slain

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey

In rage the warrior goddess from
The Western Sea arose
Her bloody gauntlet dealt that day
A thousand fierce deathblows
The kingdom saved her quest complete
She sank beneath the waves
Till Ulster's sons with sacrifice
Bid her return once more
