OT: City of Heroes and Villains
Has anyone played this/these games? I saw the box set at Wal-Mart yesterday and later that night went to a little get together up the street. My friend was playing it and said it was one of his favorites. I played it for a little while but wasn’t too crazy. Anyway I’m thinking about picking it up just to give myself some diversity in gaming; I play 4X on the computer and the DBZ series on the PS2 but that’s it for my gaming. Oh, drifted again! Anyway I’m thinking about picking it up and wanted to get some feedback. So anyone play(ed) it and what was your honest take on it?

Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
I liked it, but it is a MMORG, so the words Evercrack, and WoWeed come to mind. Yet it does seem to be alittle less involved than the other two. I played both versions, but they are mostly the same, except that one you play a hero, the other a villian. Different motiviations, but the same mechanics. I like WoW as well, but after playing it for 10 hours straight right after I installed, I realized it would be bad. I played for 2 more weeks...then said adios.

Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
I played the beta for a about a month when it was around, and I liked it but not enough for me to pay monthly about it. The whole idea of a super hero game is great and you can create some really cool characters with the editor, but after that it's mostly just combat and character building. Either alone, in team or against other players. However I don't know how much it has changed since the beta. Check the games fan sites and forums if you haven't already, and there might be a free trial around.

Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
I bought city of villians, played it fanatically for a month or so then got bored of it. Its an mmo, so the gameplay never progresses, so if you can't get into the social aspect of the game, don't buy it.

The most fun part is character creation. It's all down-hill after that.

I played City of Heroes. It took a year to make level 50, so clearly I wasn't playing full time. Also until the end I avoided powerlevelling. At the end I guess I lost interest in grinding the same missions, but oh I wanted to "win" by making level 50 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. See my Character.
I have never played CoV and I quit because I thought D&D online was coming. I did get DDO, but because of a bank issue I couldn't play past the free 10 days. I don't mind the cost per month of MMPORPGs. It's about the cost I would pay for a large novel that would last about 3 days to read. |
Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
I played COH at launch. In a party it's a blast but solo it's pretty boring after a while (though I'm allergic to grind levelling after playing EQ for about three years on and off). At one point they released the character creator as a seperate download, I think. The character creation really was the most fun part of the game.

Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
Where would I find that as a download?

Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
I guess the basic idea either rocks or sucks depending on whether or not one likes comic books.
When I first heard about CoH, my initial reaction was, "Oh give me a ***ing break, who the **** would want to play something that stupid?" Obviously, the answer turned out to be, "A lot of people!" But I still think it's an appallingly stupid idea http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

"Where would I find that as a download? "
I had a look about and apparently it was orignally released on the Korean website, where it was available for a while. I found a few places offering fixarounds for the download but none that looked that offical. Given the dubious nature of the software I'd have to say don't bother looking for it. Particularly on bittorrent. "But I still think it's an appallingly stupid idea " Worse than war or genetics? Just trying to find your sweet spot, baby... |
Re: OT: City of Heroes and Villains
Based on the reviews here and on line I decided not to get it. I really don’t get into the online game thing anyway. I mean look at SE. I have been a part of the series since SE3 (or was it 2) and have been here at the Forums long enough to know about the online games that are run. Yet I have never felt the desire to play even one. A major factor the long term fun factor and I really like the way Narf put it.
