Re: Cave provinces!
I guess Cave Provinces = Darkness, perhaps restricted/prohibited flying, too. But I think they're stretching it as far as archers are concerned... Line of sight etc. Caves so big that they allow heavy cavalry to charge ? Uhh..
I'd rather see something more intresting and probably radical, like size restriction. Creatures size 3+ can't enter. But it won't happen. Fire Arrows - a bit puzzling. If it works for chakram and shuriken, why not for slingers ? Actually I didn't have a chance to test it with slingers. |
Re: Cave provinces!
Fire Arrows does work with slings.
Since many Agarthans are size 3+, it'd be rather odd if they couldn't enter their native terrain. It does make sense that in general ranged attacks be much less useful in caverns. I think it's somewhat the case anyway due to the darkness. But a range limit would make sense. PvK |
Re: Cave provinces!
I gave size3 as example because I believe Cavalry is size3. I could be wrong.
Somehow caves feel more appropriate to small parties (read: RPGs), I can't picture big armies fighting there. Uhhh, it's not all lost ! I hope there's a big supply problem in caves. That would sort of fix it. |
Re: Cave provinces!
I'm happy and suprised because I requested that there would be support for cavernous provinces but IIRC devs didn't say anything about it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Cave provinces!
Aren't you more glad that #defmult will work? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I just hope they realize that its not only 20 that doesn't work :X And regarding caves, I'd expect that a whole civilization living in a cave would have several large open areas (either natural, or artifical through mining), to get together. And also so they can breath :X |
Re: Cave provinces!
I was thinking huge underground caverns, not what we typically associate as 'caves'. If there were actually cramped provinces, it might be sort of messed up.
|
Re: Cave provinces!
I'm fairly sure that this is refering to the Cave forts that Argatha and Abyssia have.
|
Re: Cave provinces!
I am just happy doom horrors have been fixed, its eaten 4 of my hall of hero leaders, 2 pretenders, 2 army comanders. Suppose I was bound to be affected being in 7 MP's.
When's v3.02 coming out? |

Re: Cave provinces!
If anyone played the game 'Avernum', also known as 'Exile' by Spiderweb soft, they know...
Caves can be very interesting places. |
Re: Cave provinces!
Will this mean, that as well as worrying about normal attacks from land, sea and air. We will after watch out for underground attack as well! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif Cool! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Re: Cave provinces!
Where do you find these patch progress updates?
The Illwinter website only has updates up until the last patch. |

Re: Cave provinces!
Thanks, Electric!
I noticed something in the recent updates, by the way: "* Tir na n'Og emerging" Does this mean we will see a new nation in the next patch! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif |
Re: Cave provinces!
Oh god a nation based around Ireland's myths and legends would be awesome. It's probably just a Early Age Man nation though.

Re: Cave provinces!
Oh god a nation based around Ireland's myths and legends would be awesome. It's probably just a Early Age Man nation though. You say that as if though these 2 are mutually exclusive. It'll be interesting to see how much Tir na n'Og is different from the Last of the Tuatha theme from Dom2. |
Re: Cave provinces!
I don't know, but it stands to reason that if it weren't any different they would have included it originally?

Really looking forward to Tir n'an Og and it is early man but before man invaded and captured the forest of avalon. I hope I enjoy playing the nation as much as I enjoy playing MA Man (this nation rocks, if you want sheer overwhealming power), favourite nation don't you know! |
Re: Cave provinces!
Hmmm...cave province...sounds interesting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
Oh and v3.02! Woot! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: Cave provinces!
Cave provinces, this makes me very, very happy!
Now I just have to wish for deep ocean provinces ('cause pressure is an explitive), cloud provinces (for angels to sit on and harp about everything), and fire (magma? sleestaks? Beelzebub?) provinces (below the caves) |
Re: Cave provinces!
I'm pretty sure I've seen Deep Sea provinces.
|
Re: Cave provinces!
I'm not talking the standard deep sea province type in game already, I'm talking colossal miles-deep oceanic rifts. Sure, they're in the game, but the reality of such a place, how truly hostile it is to life which hasn't evolved to deal with it, would require separation into a separate type of province to simulate properly. For instance, if you were to drop a 1970 cadillac de'ville (I wouldn't do it to an El Dorado) into the deepest part of the ocean, it'd come back up approximately the size and shape of a bowling ball.

Re: Cave provinces!

I'd expect that after being squished into the size of a bowling ball, it would be even more dense* and thus will sink further. * - as in (weight/volume), there's a better word for it, I just don't know what it is in English :X |
Re: Cave provinces!
Ok, here I was thinking the cadillac would be lowered by a heavy steel chain, miles long, and a powerful wynch, attached via the arm of a crane to a tugboat. The chain could possibly be made of tungsten, or adamantium, or Superman, if he temporarily gained Mr Fantastic's (Fantastic Four) stretching abilities, for that matter, since it was a hypothetical example http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Yes, even in the deepest oceans, cadillacs do not float for very long...sigh.

Re: Cave provinces!
I don't recall us needing unique summons for mountain or wasteland provinces...
At any rate, I'm against any provinces more 'hostile' than the current Deep Sea. They're cool concepts, but much too troublesome to take if your army's not designed for it. One 'brutal' province a map might be nifty, though, if it doesn't unbalance the map towards certain nations. Say a lava province that allows recruitment of Salamanders and other fire-based units that Abysia wouldn't have nearly as much use for as its competition. |

...It was just an example. At any rate, since armies wouldn't exactly be going down in Cadilacs, lungs (For enchanted humans) and the like are at risk of compression.

Re: Cave provinces!
Thank you Uninspired Name, and thank you Cainehill, for the physics lesson. Always nice to learn something new. Anyway...my intention for extreme water and fire realms wasn't that they be enormously useful, compared to caverns. There's a reason people used to live in caves, and that's because caves a great places to live, especially when one of your options is to live inside a smilodon's belly. I'd want these realms in the game to add flavor, to maybe provide a handful of unique provinces here and there. Creatures, magic items, pretenders, and heroes could come from them, maybe go there, but in general, very few are going to want to move there, or even could. It would be the fact that they existed in the game, and the sense of wonder from that (ever wonder about outer space?) that I think would only add to the game's "romance" as it were. Also, my opinion is that it wouldn't be difficult to code them in, which is always a plus, and once they're in, certainly some use can be wrung from them.
As far as cloud realms or heavenly realms, well why not? Considering that quite a few creatures fly and spells can compensate for those that lack (and why not spells to access and explore extreme depths or extreme heat/cold? and why not the realms of the Rimsurtar while I'm riding on this mad train?). My whole point is that I'm glad cave provinces are in, and I hope to see different areas also opened up, even if I can't stick a castle or a flag on it and call it home. |
Re: Cave provinces!
There are a few maps here
http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/maps.html which have made use of zones such as underworld or clouds (kindof). Any terrains added which limit a standard army from entering would have to also add magic items and spells which would allow a standard army to enter. Sounds good but quite a project to add. |
Re: Cave provinces!
Tecnically, we already have Fire Resistance spells for a lava province. A mass Fire Resistance magic item or two would be all we really need.
|
Re: Cave provinces!
For the deep sea, you could have the Diving Bell magic item (level 4 constr. allows you and 25 human-sized troops to venture into the deepest parts of the ocean, also allows waterbreathing) and the Nautilus artifact (level 8 constr. You and up to 300 troops can sail 20,000 leagues into the depths of the sea and return without harm-waterbreathing and 100% darkvision included). Amulet of the Fish should allow both air travel for waterbreathers and deep ocean travel for everyone, since the sphere of water it produces would have to be self-pressurizing to retain integrity. One or two other items already in the game might allow access too, but again, it's not the ability to "breathe water", it's the pressure you'd have to worry about, and it should be significantly more difficult to overcome lack of air, high pressure, and total darkness.

Re: Cave provinces!
I think you guys are totally missing HoneyBadger's point. A Cadillac mod. Everyone drives around in Cadillacs. Certain Cadillacs (the DeVille) would allow deep sea manouevering. Others (escalade) would allow ez mountain movement. The bigger caddies would allow trampling the smaller ones. The new fast caddies would be like light cavalry. Kind've a Car Wars theme, with Caddies ruling the highways of Dominions III. Watch out little Hondas!!!!! Possible nations::
Honda or Toyota (don't need both) (reliable units that don't need many resources nor supplies) Porsche (expensive but fast units) Cadillacs (of course. kind've the Jotuns of the new mod) Land of the SUVs (units would be Humvees, Explorers, Navigators, etc.) . . . |

Sounds good to me! Level 7 construction: Summon Bus
|
Re: Cave provinces!
Swarm: Summons a swarm of mopeds. They do not do much damage but are good for harrasing enemy units.
|
Re: Cave provinces!
A Cadillac would not be squished, because it would be ate by a Great Ancient. Or a kraken. Or something bigger and badder... deeper.
