OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

I haven't bought a console game system since Super Nintendo and recently have been considering the thought of breaking down and actually buying a system.

Mainly so that I will have something to do with my nephews since they suck at PC games but excel at console games. Ya go figure. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Any who, the kids say that the Xbox 360 is the best system out. I priced this system and O M F G! $600.00 for a complete system including only ONE game.

I ask you is it worth it? Are the games any good? Most appear to be PC games so I am sure they are ok, but MY GOOD GOD $600.00 for a console? (This doesn't include tax)

I just don't know... $600.00 plus for a gaming system???? Man I just don't know.

Well, if i would be you (or me) i would buy a PS-2 with a modship. I have PS2 with a modchip since 2003 and its awesome. It plays backups and movies and importants and it has a load of good games, even though the days of "her" generation are about to end. Of course i only got the PS2 because i love RPGs, and we all know developers love doing RPGs for Sony.

I bought a PS2 for my son years ago and wound up buying another for me to play Gran Turismo. I won’t buy another console even though the next Gran Turismo is supposed to be far better.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

600 is the PS3.

Keep in mind you won't get the full benefit out of either system unless you have a HDTV or hook it up to your computer monitor. Certain X-Box 360 games basically can't be played on a standard TV because they get too blurry..

I would absolutly recommend Wii. Not only is motion control awesome, but the price tag is pretty too. You are never too old for Nintendo. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

Working at Gamestop for the last month or so taught me quite a bit about next gen. So here's the wisdom I can pass on to you:

PS3: complete crap, probably for the next year or so too. Sony's trying to shove blue-ray down consumers' throats. Unless you MUST HAVE the graphics (but...you play SE), or you're planning on investing everything in blue-ray DVDs, save your money. The games (that are out) for PS3 are all, without exception, better on 360. If they're not, they suck (really, they do... look at the reviews for the Gundam game)
But there's Resistance: Fall of man, which is pretty fun I hear.
So, a $600 (without HDTV cables, costs extra) machine for playing Resistance, then Metal Gear and Final Fantasy (when they come out)
Lame.
It can play PS1 and PS2 games, though. Huge library.

360: Depends if you're online or not. If you're a big one for internet multiplayer, 360 can't be touched. Good, solid release list of games you'll actually want to play (Halo 2, Gears of War, Morrowind, NBA, Madden, Project Gotham, etc) X-Box Live (the $50/year internet service) can't be touched by anything out now. If you play a lot of games, and if you dig muliplayer that's not splitscreen, go for this. Especially if your friends have this. Biggest next-gen game library of the next-gen systems, but only certain X-Box games work on the 360 (mostly the popular ones). That, and they're easy to find now because they've been out for a year.

Wii: This is the one I have. I don't recommend this if you're a hardcore "gamer", because you'll be left wanting your halos and final fantasies, but this system is nothing but pure, unadulterated fun - provided you have people around. The controller is a wireless motion sensor that translates your actions into what your character is doing on-screen (it's your gun for shooters, your sword, your tennis racket, etc), but this is one of the best things to do when you're looking to kill time with friends. I got mine about a week ago and picked up a few extra controllers while I was on Thanksgiving break. Once I brought it to school my roomates and I set the system up in our lounge and started playing. Within an hour nearly EVERYONE in the hall was crowded into the lounge area. It's almost a spectator sport. It's the kind of thing that breaks down barriers. EVERYONE wants to play it (whereas, say, the shoot-em-ups on the X-Box turn people off, as does Madden, or Gran Turismo, etc) but within the last week, our floor (and whoever else wanders by) has, for the most part, been playing the Wii instead of going to the pre-finals parties.
That's some draw.
Haha, I'm going on and on about this but I am a Nintendo fanboy. Get this one for sure if you spend a lot of time around people, it's definitely worth it.
(plus, you can download the classic NES/Super NES/N64/Sega games too... for cost, at least - but it's cheap)

As an aside, working at Gamestop has taught me more about video games than I ever wanted to know. If you have any questions... don't hesitate.

(ps, someone bought SEV at our store the other day. I sent him to download BalanceMod, haha)

Get a Wii, if your a real hardcore gamer your using a computer for that already. Spent many a hour at a lan party last weekend playing the Wii and it is well worth it.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

I got a playstation 2 for my birthday once, maybe about 1.5 years after it came out. It wasn't too bad. I had played the first ps and loved it, I even bought one towards the end of it's life (maybe a year before ps2 came out). Had it for maybe a year before I started getting "disk read error" Tried several different things, nothing worked. Made me so angry (after having just bought a much anticpated game then not being able to play it) that I just gave it to my younger brother and told him he could keep it if he got it working....well, he didn't. So I won't get a PS3 (unless I become so rich that I need to throw money away). And as some ppl who sat inline in front of a store the night before launch and were going to sell it on ebay said "All the good games won't be out for a year at least anyway". Onto the Wii, looks intresting, haven't played it yet, I used to love nintendo, I had the first nintendo, SNES, and the N64. Once Gamecube came out I had been turned off of nintendo, it just seems they were trying to gear everything towards 6-12 yr olds (sorry, Mario just dont cut it for me anymore, though I wouldn't mind zelda) IF I had to buy a console it would be the Wii but for only one reason......X360 I own one already, it's great, I bought a Xbox after my PS2 stopped working and loved it so I figured I would love 360, haven't been disappointed yet. I grew up being a console gamer (parents were too poor to buy a PC untill I was about 16) Now I'm more of a PC gamer (being that strategy games are my fav. genre) but still enjoy grabbing a controller and chainsawing someone in GoW or sniping someone in Halo 2.

Lots of people are going "Wii-60". Instead of getting a PS3, you get a wii plus the low end xbox 360 for the same price.

Atrocities,

Definitely get the Xbox360. My kids have had it since last Christmas and it's great, especially for first person shooters. Make sure you have an HDTV to get the full effect. Also the online experience is second to none.

By the way it's about $399.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

I ordered a 360 with Gears as a bundle but the carrier lost it. In the meantime all I heard about were crashing games and that it sounds like a helicopter taking off when the DVD gets up to speed. So I counted my blessings and cancelled my order. Maybe look at it in the new year if there's a significant price drop.

OTOH my Wii should be here tomorrow or Monday. Hopefully...

You have to ask yourself what you actually want it for though. Buy whichever based on the games you want to play. Or more likely on the games your kids want to play. (And remember both the Wii channels and Xbox Live (and probably Sony's live service but they can go eff themselves. Dicks to the gaming community I say!!!) should give you a steady stream of demos to play.)

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

I haven't had any problems with mine, but anyway, MS was supposed to be refunding all the money to have those early one's fixed....Thats what happens when you rush to market....anyone remember the early PS2?

I dont have a HD tv and some of the games (GoW and Cod3) look Beautiful on a reg. tv.

I don't know if they did this, maybe someone else will know, but at one point sony was supposedly thinking about making it where once a game was played on a PS3 it wouldn't be allowed to be used on another one....there goes rentals. (Again, I don't know if this is true, or just a rumor, I just remember hearing about it somewhere and helped push me towards saying f sony)

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

Erm... I highly doubt they would have a blue ray burner drive in the PS3. Regular ones are difficult and expensive enough to fabricate as it is. Sounds like a fud rumor to me.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

Spectar: no, the ps3 doesn't 'mark' anything
As far as rushing to market, though, out of the 38 ps3 demo units the local district was given (Gamestop, EB, Target, etc) only seven work after the first four days :\
What I've heard from people who have actually bought the thing, it doesn't seem that far gone. Even the 1080i problems its been having haven't been fixed by the firmware patch.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

Definately, get a Wii, it's a bit less on graphics, but has a lot more playable. Just make sure you replace nintendo's silly little wrist strap with a good, strong, leather one (less your TV be victim to an unfortunate tennis accident). I also recommend buying the classic controller for it. I'm hoping to order one for this holiday for my little brother.

Xbox 360 is meh, for me. Only a handful of titles on it are really interesting in my opinion.

As for the PS3, don't have one, I might get one with my tax return if the price comes down and retailers like EB games stop predatory packaging the PS3 (forcing you to buy a number of games/accessories)

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

If you dont have or dont plan to buy a 1080p/i HDTV in the next year or so, buy the Nintendo Wii. It's more fun than the 360 or ps3. Save some money doing that and then wait to see what the games look like on the PS3 next year or the year later... They suck right now and dont take advantage of anything the PS3 can do. Resistance Fall of Man, the only good PS3 title, is garbage. Wait for better games.

Alternatively, if you do have or plan on getting a 1080p/i (Get the progressive DLP) then the 360 is the way to go.

There's another thing... China is flexing it's muscle on a new DVD format. Since it makes all the recorders now, they can pretty much [censored] us at will. So dont count on Toshiba's HDDVD or Sony's BluRay to win the new format war. Another reason to hold off on the PS3.

So 360 if u got the tube to watch it on, or get the wii and hold off to see what the future has in store for the PS3.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

I've never owned a Playstation, my only console in the last decade is an XBox, the previous one was a NES.

Following the development of the consoles and the "console war" has been interesting.

That said, a lot of the nay-saying against the PS3 sounds identical to the 360's starting days. I am curious also as to whether the Wii is simply a GameCube with a new controller.

As with anything, you'll have to wait for the next holiday season and judge the consoles then to really determine a winner.

Fyron December 8th, 2006 05:08 PM

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

No, it's not just a Gamecube with a new controller. Check out this hardware review for more info.

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

I bought a 360. Couldn't afford a new computer and I was going through game withdrawls. It was only $400. I don't have the HDTV setup and it sill looks great on a normal resolution set. I don't play online, but that doesn't bother me at all. There isn't too many kiddie games for the 360 yet. Maybe for your nieces and nephews you should buy a ps2. But for you a 360 is great. I bought great RPG call Oblivion and currently use the 360 as my DVD player.

Oblivion is a pale shadow compared to Morrowind. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif But that's neither here nor there...

All I've ever had in the way of consoles, was the original Nintendo (circa 1987 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif ). It was awesome.

That said, I think you should invest that money instead in upgrading your PC, computer games are usually far superior than their truncated console versions. I have no plans whatsoever to buy any console, I'll stick with my computer. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT: Thinking About Buying An XBox360

Depending on how old your nephews are....I'm guessing they are pretty young, since you said they suck at PC games, I'd go with the Wii.

It's not nearly as pricey as the X-box 360 or PS3, has great games for younger kids, and great interaction.

I've not got one yet, but I plan to.
