is anyone interested in a really BIG game? (edited

EDITED: the original method of this game has been fixed in the latest patches and at this time is no longer possible. Sorry.

If anyone is interested in seeing some of the stuff from a big game, check out
http://www.dom3minions.com/games/PvK-e-Oceania/

It started as a 79 player game (with one human player) on a 1100 province map. It is now in turn 70. It was a test game but PvK is having fun with it so its still running.

I am planning to create another 79 player game but this time it will have at least one era opened up to players (probably all of era 1) with all of the other nations set at extreme AI levels.

P.S. check out the army sizes on the scores.html and the last entries on the system load file. Kudos to Johan! The game stays below a load of 1.00 and takes 19 minutes to host. Thats good news for people wanting to host games without wanting to totally dedicate their server to doing that and nothing else.

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

Yes I posted this twice but it is meant as two different threads. In the general Dom3 forum I meant it as a "hey look at this" thread to just comment on the wild numbers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

This thread is meant more to get a feel on whether or not enough people would be interested in able to fill all of the early era slots. This will NOT be a blitz game. It will host once a day. It will be on a HUGE map. The final players will be well into magic so Im guessing it will not be decided entirely by armies and SC's.

I would like to see a 79 player mp game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif but would also join a game with just EA human player and the rest ai.

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

I would love to get in to a game that got deep in to the late magic stuff. High fantasy.

But no doubt I would be severely trounced by the extreme AI; let alone the other players http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

* insert disclaimer similar to the one above about inexperience, trouncings, and similar rational stuff irrelevant to the "dream" game topic * http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

HELL YEAH! Sounds absolutely awesome!

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

Well, I would join a MP like this, assuming 1 or 2 of my current 6 MP's have finished.

I would not bet against a impossible AI winning, especially if you kept to a 24 hr turnaround, the AI would have a considerable advantage in managing a large empire over a person. Managing a 100+ province empire every 24 hrs would tax even the most dedicateded Dom 3 player.

If you are going to do a serious MP, I would say 24hr host turns 1-40, 40+ 48hr host, 100+ 72hr host. I think I could cope with that and you might complete such a game in a year or so. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

Thanks. I will take these as motivation to get myself going and whip this up in a week or so.

I need to test the new fixes in the latest patch to see if it will support a maximum map. Or figure out how large I can make it without it crashing when it sends it to the players. In any case I will also try to remember to have it available for download in the old style for those with slow connections.

I am all over this. I would love to participate in this type of huge game. This may be the ultimate role playing, Tolkenish, fantasy turn based experience I have dreamed of.

I would like to be in on this too, and of course, because its new, Lanka would be my choice too. Maybe we can have a random drawing for it or something.

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

Meglobob: 100+ provinces? The winner of such a game would probably have 400+.

It is easy to pick a winner, though: I bet the game will crash and not be able to be completed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

How do you get so many players in a game? Even if all nations from all three eras were used, that is still only about 60.

Gandalf knows all, including lots that mere motals like me and you, Sheap can only dream of, do not question the great Gand... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

I realise that with 1,100 provinces you would need alot more than 100 to win, the point I was making was micro-management would start to be really, really painful with 100+ provinces. Especially with my style of playing Dom3, have lots of everything, just in case...

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

There are commands that can be added to a map to load AIs into the game. Map commands can setup scenarios also (such as making some AIs ally with other AIs). Using those commands, and the numbered slots for nations, you can create a game of one era, and then add everything else as AI (including the modder slots) for a total of 79 players.

You CAN actually play with all 3 eras as human players, but that takes a mod which everyone would have to run.

Also, in the game Im running... the modders slots would be basically freebies. They dont fight well. They could be filled in with modded nations but Im not ready for a game where everyone has to run a dozen mods either.

Moybe down the road we will try those other things.

78 enemies over 1000 providence? It gives me a luck chance that i'll be in a nice corner away from everyone else, also the chance to be right next to an enemy. but the chance of being next to an enemy is marginally lower

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

The original setup for this game is no longer possible

Im afraid that my ability to run 79 nation games appears to have been fixed in the latest patches. Games now only allow the nations of whatever era the game is created for. The ability to add other nations on the command switch was repaired awhile back. And the ability to do it as a map command appears to be fixed in the latest patch.

The only way to do it now is if someone creates a mod that puts all nations into one era. Thats not too hard. In fact, it was done already but I dont think that person released it publicly. Since I dont tend to like running games with mods, I dont plan to run such a game anytime in the near future. Sorry about the change.

Are you going to start up a small 21 player game?

I'll join as EA-Kailasa, MA-Bander Log, or LA-Ermor.

Gandalf Parker January 8th, 2007 07:44 PM

Re: is anyone interested in a really BIG game?

There are plenty of games going on that promote the small-map tactics. I think that gives the impression that there are "killer" strategies. Just because it happens to be in my nature to automatically want to go where the crowd isnt, I would create somthing else.

I might create a mega-map 21 player game later.

Or a large Victory Point game.

Either way it will probably be something large enough to support long-term research or stealth as a way of winning. Or even luck-of-chance like a game with scattered surprises or a Tower map.
