Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
Back in the olden days when I used to play Dom II, a helpful soul made a battlefield map mod of sorts where I could easily pit any types of units against each other to test how effective certain units or unit combinations were against each other. Is there a similar mod for Dom III?
Thanks in advance. P.S. Basically, I want to test various units against each other to test their combat effectiveness. If this can be easily modded myself, please let me know too. |
Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
I think Gandalf Parker has what you want, but I'm too lazy to link it.

I browsed his website, but all his downloads were maps?

Ah, I was thinking of the map he made that allows you to (inconveniently) punch in which units you want to fight which and then have the battle in only a few turns. Unfortunately, Dominions 3 doesn't have anything that simple.
There was actually a pretty long argument over whether a battle-testing option would go against the 'spirit of the game'. |

You could probably just use the one from DomII (Don't have, nor a link, so don't ask http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif)

Oh, wait, Gandalf linked to the Dominions 2 one. At any rate, here it is. http://www.dom2minions.com/Mini.shtml

Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
Rather than use Shift-I to obtain commander and unit numbers, it's easier to just enclose their names within quotation marks, just as Gandalf has done for magic items.
For example: #commander 356 #unit 10 369 is equivalent to: #commander "onyx priestess" #unit 10 "nightmare" Either creates an Onyx Priestess commanding 10 Nightmares. Edit: Thanks for the correction. I've changed it here, too. |
Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
Note: quotation marks, not parentheses.

Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
Ok, fellows. I downloaded the map, but I don't seem to be able to edit the map file to try differnt unit combinations.
In fact, I can't even open it in order to edit it. I tried with both MS Word and NotePad and neither worked. What program do I need to edit the map file? Thanks in advance. |
Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
Actually, to be more specific, when I do open the map file with either MS Word or NotePad, or I see is garbled, indecipherable language.

Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
That's strange. The .map file should be just plain text file, which can be opened in all possible text editors (although I find that Notepad might show newlines as boxes, and use Wordpad in those cases).

Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
Its text but its unix text (linux is the home system of Dom).
So notepad makes it look line one long line of text with boxes instead of carriage returns. Wordpad is easier but be sure to save it back as text. |
Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
To edit plain text file, you need plain text editor. Curiously enough neither MS Word nor notepad are that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif My preferred plain text editor (and more) on Windows is Crimson Editor.

Wordpad is ok, unless you have to deal with Unicode.

There is an easier way to test units against each other in any battle replay, but I don't remember the key shortcuts that kill all units on the field and the others that pop new ones in there that will then fight it out. It works as kind of battle simulator.

Re: Is there a battlefield map mod for Dom III?
The link has been updated on my Dom3minions.com site but I let the registry on dom2minions lapse.
