OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage here
I wont say anything else than that this video footage is from MARCH 2005. The game is on hold since then.
Can you believe it ? Its just like with Invasion (tv series). Everything that is not 150% guaranteed to make money isnt worth [censored]. LINK TO VIDEO, 87 MB in size. Gorgeous. yes, this is somehow a reference to the thread AC made :p |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
What do you use to play it?
|
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
What is the game, where is the website, can I purchase an advanced copy? I would buy and play this game even if it had zero depth of play, modability, and replay value. A game like this even in its first incarnation is bound to climb to the top. Assuming greed doesn’t short it into an early release mass production piece of crap!

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
You cant play it. There was once a game called Nexus: The Jupiter Incident where you had like 6-7 ships of different sizes to make missions. Meanwhile, you could salvage ships and ready your ships with new armament, shields and so on. This is video footage from the engine which was made for Nexus 2. Since the release of that video material in march 2005 the game is on hold, since Nexus 1 obviously didnt sell good enough to reason a second part.
President: Sarcasm, anyone ? The video material alone already shows plently of game depth and replay value imho. APart from that, there were some mods for Nexus 1, which included a B5 and a ST scenario. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Certainly amazing FPS (if rendered live), or movie material.
Unlikely to be tactical combat as we think of it around here; not enough ships, way to many polys, 3D movement, etc. Most notably, there is no UI. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
It's a superb space engine. I remember back years ago when they first released the 'Genesis' demo( it was supposed to be an Imperium Galactica game then, from what I remember ), which was a couple of years before the release of Nexus. The graphics were about the same, and not only that, the game ran completely smooth on my 933 mhz Geforce4 mx computer: the engine's got very good performance, considering the level of detail. I especially liked the way the game rendered beams and shields: too many space games just go for the old projectile-only style, and shield effects are usually badly done, if present at all.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
SJ, the video is from a tactical space combat game, no FPS. Some scenes are showing tie camera following a figher, but this is clearly not what the game is about.
As mentioned, you have a bunch of ships with different equipment (as in armor, shields, weaponry). Think homeworld 2, but less ships and more depth. All ships have certain ranks in them, influencing stats. You can target all subsystems (scanner, weaponry, engines, etc). Weapons and shields have different parameters (such as certain weapon can disable shields more easily, while others will only damage sub-systems.) The video shows in-game footage. If you ever watched Babylon 5. Just imagine a Babylon 5 battle, and you are the one controlling it. If you like ST more, think about the intro battle in Nemesis (i think) were they are fighting a Cube. This would be a dream come true, at least for me. The scene which is beginning at exactly 2:30 minutes is what is making me happy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
The problem with that is the total lack of UI.
If it is a realtime rendered cutscene, very nice. If it is a strategic combat, that's an awesome replay. If it is a tactical combat, it looks great, but how the hell do you control it? All the graphics in the world don't help if the UI is worse than SE5's. |

That's from Nexus( http://www.nexusthegame.com ). The Interface wasn't bad, really. It was the repetitive gameplay that 'ruined' the game, I'd say. The tactical combat and such it provided was fun, but alas you can only do the same things so many times in a row before the fun goes away. They'd do far better to go with more of a Homeworld gameplay style, i.e. adding a strategic layer, resource collection, building of ships, etc. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
The video has no UI on purpose. Its just to show features of the graphical engine. Anyways. Even with the not-so-optimal UI of Nexus 1, it would be fun blowing stuff up.
|
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
No not sarcasm; not at all. It was a straight forward declaration that this game could not have enough flaws to stop me from purchasing it. Depth of play and replay can’t be gained from footage. Apparently you and I do have the same opinion, which is we would buy and play it regardless, now if we can get the bean counters to agree with us.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
nexus looked cool, but it was prety complicated from what I saw of the demo.
|
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Heh, you cant get depth without complexity :p
President: Sorry then :p |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Nexus was great, get the game if you like RTT games.
|
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
You do need some minimum amount of complexity (to get beyond tic-tac-toe and rock-paper-scissors), but simple can make for great depth.
Consider CBmod, for example. As far as the datafiles go, it is quite simple. At the same time it has a lot of strategic depth due to the flexibility and balance (if I do say so myself). It seems to me that too many people try to add complexity with an iron fist and choke off depth by accident as a side effect. |

Ragnarok-X said:
Heh, you cant get depth without complexity :p Sure you can. Just look at chess; compared to most TBS PC games, it is extremely simple. There is no building, no resources, no stats on units, no terrain; just pieces that have certain movement patterns. The rules are very simple and straightforward. There is very little complexity, but it is an extremely deep game. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I have to disagree. Chess is very complex. You need to plan your moves several steps ahead. Movement patters could as well be translated into stats, as can the amount of pieces you have.
Just because a game CAN be simple to amateurs, that doesnt mean it cant be complex to professionals :p |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I think that's what we mean by simple, and deep.
The rules are very simple, and can be listed on half of an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper with enough pictures for average joes to understand. The gameplay that comes out of that is quite deep. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Whatever you say, games that are simple which lack complexety end up becoming boring. Just look at Empires At War. Only a year later and you can get it for less than 20 bucks. (Compared to Civ IV or even III by the same time.)

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Ok now that the download is done and I have had a chance to see this I have but two words. God Damn!! I want this game!
|
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Glad you like http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif My christmas present for you (the video, not the game).
lol http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif btw, yeah Empire at War, what a WASTE of time. Cute graphics and nice flair, but depth is almost non-existant. I remember how i played skirmish after skirmish, until, aftr game #3 or #4 i noticed there is not much in terms of variety. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I am playing Empire Earth now, simply out of desperation at this point, and although the game is fun, I have noticed that I really miss stock SE V features such as being able to find units, scrap units, mothball, etc.
Odd how something as simple as a scrap or sort option can really improve a game, even two games that are not related but share simular characteristics. When the day comes that the big game companies decide to invest in a new generation of 4x games, I sincerely hope by that time the market will be far more friendly to them and that their efforts result in great sales and wonderfully rich and deeply involving games. But until then, thank you for the video and merry christmas. |

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I really wish to God that some developer will take a game like Space Empires and murge it with a game like Empire Earth. You have the best of 4x game design dedicated to earth conquest in an epic and long term replayable way.
Empire Earth is just way to limited and lacks any amount of replayability. Its the same thing over and over again. There is no depth, no lasting lust to play, just play it for a while and realize how limited it is compared to a 4x game. I want a 4x earth based conquest game! And NOT a Civilization game. Eeeeww. |
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Yeah, I can't get it to play with WMP or Realplayer, what am I doing wrong?
|
Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I had no problems playing. Spectoarofdeath what are your system specs? Forget about realplayer..... nasty.
Use Media Player (Kinda ok but better than Real), or even WinAmp. |

Unfortunately the gameplay was simplified (no need to refit ships, they automatically gain the latest technology!) but the campaign is well put together and a pleasure to play - at least the first couple of times. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
