one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Since some people have shown an interest.... Here is one of the ways I like to play Dominions. http://www.Dom3Minions.com/RandomMaps/MegaMap.zip I will leave the other post out in general area for "wow cool map" posts. And repost here for some discussion on the methods, pros and cons of it. It has 1495 provinces, 3 large oceans and 3 large land areas. You can play with all the other nations in your era and still have wilderness between you making scouting for them an effort. And there lots of impassable mountains creating chokepoints. It also has various surprises scattered around the map so be sure to SCOUT CAREFULLY before attacking a province. I also added a short script that shows how I generated the additions that are scattered on the map. The "interesting.yab" isnt needed to play the map but if you have a YaBasic or some other basic then you might use it to generate surprises for other maps also. Or re-generate the surprises on this one if you play it enough to get to know whats there. Warning: generating the world at the beginning of the game can take awhile Gandalf Parker |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Here are some maximum maps that I have generated (1495 provinces and extra mountains for chokepoints). The all have pros and cons for play. Particularly for playing water nations or playing against them.
Any comments? favorites? want one to develope off of? http://www.Dom3Minions.com/RandomMap...ers/_index.jpg |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Second row, far right, is my favorite. It has a very organic feel to it and looks like it would be perfect for a long MP game with two water nations included.
Nice looking maps. |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Abit much water on that one but with maps that large the land pieces are large enough that you dont start right NEXT to water. I can zip it up and give you a link if you want it.
Second row and next to the end (#9) could be wrappable if someone wants to do the work on it. |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Actually, if you wouldn't mind I would like that map. With the mountains it looks like it would have some nice choke points as well. I will probably play it with some extreme starting settings too for a very slow pace long duration game.

Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
rats. When I redo the index it doesnt keep the same order. I dont remember which one it was.
Was it this one? http://www.Dom3Minions.com/RandomMap...mmax01.rgb.jpg Use this link http://www.Dom3Minions.com/RandomMaps/maxs/keepers/ and find the actual jpg of the map to let me know the name of it |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Max7rgb is the one http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Ok snag it and do whatever you want.
http://www.dom3minions.com/RandomMaps/max7.zip I will pull it from my sets (I generate about 100 a day, I will find more) |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Done, thank you sir!

Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
This map would not work for me. But with a little poking and prodding I was able to make it work.
I loaded the map into paint shop pro, converted it to a tga. Then I had to edit the map file and point it to the correct image. The original image you sent me was named max7.rgb and the MAP file was referring to max07.rgb. This was causing my Game to crash! In retrospect, I probably could have left it an .rgb and just fixed the MAP file, but oh well it works now anyway http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Thank you for taking the time to zip and host the map and image for me, it is greatly appreciated and works like a charm now! |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Ouch. I forgot that I had renamed the files because I already had one named that in my keeper directory.
I probably will wait for the next patch before selecting a map for me to put alot of time into. I have my favorite colors picked out and Ive been waiting a year for all the color switches to work on the maps. I was about to give up and tackle getting a paint program to change the sea border colors manually. |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
Quick question for you gandalf.
I would like to host this map on my second computer and play it on my main system. I notice that you play alot of these larger games and I was curious if you could tell me the most minimalistic setting switches for such a server? What I am looking for is a way to host the game on my other computer and it host each turn as fast as possible with the least overhead. Thanks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: one of Gandalf\'s Crazy Maps
windows? linux? mac?
dom3 -ST It will prompt for all of the questions and running in text mode removes almost all of the overhead for running the game. Of course there are a couple of pages of switches for tweaking beyond that, or for automating parts of the setup when you get tired of putting answers into the prompts each time you start a game, but thats the easiest starting command for you. |
