SFTC PBW Game

Ok who is interested...this is a good way to do some beta testing, and have some fun. All I need is PES to give the required files to Geo so that they will be available on PBW. I figure 6 people tops for this game, and a relatively medium sized galaxy. So who is interested?

1. Kana
2. PES
3. ???
4. ???
5. ???
6. ???

I'd play.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Sure just have Geo PM me with what is needed. Also I have a very small patch right now. Is there anyway I can get some more bugs or at least type-o's before we start this up? I really think this patch is important for #2 and want to apply it before we spin up the jump drives. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Version 0.12-B DD Month 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Changed -- Opening picture for atmosphere and planet types to more clearly indicate which are Not Used.
2. Added -- Components may now be sorted by clicking “Filter Comps” in the “Create Design” Window. Options for sorting are “All Components”, “HT 1”, “HT 2”, so forth up to “HT 16”, and “Required” as in components that are required on most but not all designs.

I already expressed interest in participating.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Hay this means I have to keep two versions of the SFTC right? The one I am actively patching as reports come in and the one I am playing. Is that right, can someone PM Geo in here for guidance?

Re: SFTC PBW Game

I'll possibly play, I've not looked at the mod yet though.
I'd advise waiting till we get a new patch from aaron though.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

What about an update status for the current patch? Any word on how long it will be till we get the next one?

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Inetresting. I like how you set up some things, but I'm not convinced it is ready for a game. I tried x-ray lasers and it wouldn't recognise the containment vessels. The ships are a bit slow aren't they. They need an aweful lot of engines.

another thing I discovered was the ships I made had no interest in fighting, they just retreated.

President_Elect_Shang January 20th, 2007 02:52 AM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Yes to the engines and speed. The X-Ray was working but I broke it again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif It will be working in the next patch; again! (Shame on me!). I am not seeing them run from each other in combat. If you have a missile boat design check that you put at least one magazine on it. If that isn't working can you attach the save game here so I can look at it? Thanks!

Randallw January 20th, 2007 04:49 AM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

They use cannons. If I start them next to each other they blast away, but otherwise they start retreating. I'll try to figure out a savegame.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

your "retro construction" is confusing, when you say "retro construction I thought "building up ships quickly using retroseries design and retrofiting"

Kana January 20th, 2007 12:15 PM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Ok...

1. Kana
2. PES
3. Hippocrates
4. RandallW
5. se5a ?
6. ???

At best it would be nice if we could get people who actually have a passing knowledge of the boardgame Starfire. Yet I dont think that is neccasary a deal breaker. Also I guess we can wait till the next patch from Aaron, and the follow up patch from PES.

I hope your keeping good notes of your changes PES...

Basically what he means by retro construction, is just the ability to add older components to a ship hull after you have developed new and better components. This is for the purpose of espionage, trade, goodwill, deception, etc...

I'll join the next game i'm still trying to learn all the things of se5

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Actually I am keeping very detailed notes. In fact if you read the FAQ in the SFTC download thread or the ReadMe.txt in the download itself it provides a very clear description that Retro-Construction is taking any hull you have developed and adding outdated components to it. But if your like me you don't read crap, just play and figure as you go. As for construction rates I strongly suggest you take good care of your ships and try not to get them killed. Money to build ships won't be your problem (this is in the FAQ too) it is the build time that will get your empire squashed. You must build up and build often. Mothballing is a well known and very heavily used tactic in the SF board game.

There aren't any cannons except the Energy Pulse Cannon? Do you mean Guns? They need ammo, look at the component description and ordinance usage. Dumb question but are you sure you downloaded the right mod? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif

yeah sorry, guns. I made a test game. With frigates they will fight, but with the monitors I originally started with they just turn and retreat.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Ah I found your problem. All of the strategies your empire uses are from Stock. When a mod (any mod) uses a new unit type the SE5 program freaks out and commands the ship to run. Now I suspect I know how the default strategies managed to ignore the ones I provided. Did you happen to take a saved empire file and edit it for use in the save game you sent?

Randallw January 20th, 2007 11:40 PM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

I made the empire file from scratch, I know better than to use empire files from another mod. Today I made a frigate first and they fought, then I made a monitor like yesterday and again they ran. Yesterday I thought to change the strategy, though I forgot today, and they still ran.

President_Elect_Shang January 21st, 2007 12:51 AM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

EDIT: SoD this is the file I would like you to download too.

I'm not sure why it didn't take the provided strategies. I would like to test something out though. Place this file in the folder replacing the Mod_Definition.txt that is there now. Start a new game then create a new empire. I think I know what you did and this should fix it.

Edited in: As long as you are using the Stock strategies they will always run. The only way around this is to edit the strategies and include a line for "Shuttle" and "Shuttle Carrier".

Edit: attachment removed, please use the below (or above) attachment to correct this problem. Thank you, PES

Re: SFTC PBW Game

I copied it, pasted it to notepad, saved as the same name, removed the old mod def, placed the new one in, tried to create a new empire and it has no ship sets.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

if it's the strategies.txt file you're talking about, last time I looked this file was ignored by the game alltogether. even the one in the defult data folder.

Ok open that same file and change "Allow Main Empires" from FALSE to TRUE and type it all caps.

I would agree with you se5a; however, I am not having this same problem. The empires I create are all using the SFTC strategies. I am lost as to why SoD and Randallw are getting the default ones forced on them. SoD can you do me two more favors?

1. Upload your current save game zipped up so I can take a look at it.

2. Start a new game and create a fresh empire totally from scratch. Save the empire and quit SE5. Start SE5 back up and make a new game but load the empire you saved, do not make another new one. After the game starts look at the strategies and if they are default start a new game from within the one that this running. In other words don't quit SE5 just start a new game. Once you do that create another empire from scratch, start playing, then look at the default strategies. You are looking for something with "Do Not Launch" or "Launch All Units".

Thanks to Raapys I think I have this problem fixed. Something that he had said in the KB. It didn't strike me at the time; as obvious as it was, because I thought I had already eliminated this problem. SoD instead of the below try this:

1. Download and extract the file attached here and drop it into the SFTC folder. You should see three folders when you are done; "Data", "Empires", and "Pictures".

2. Start a new game and create a new empire. Now check the strategies and tell me what the default listed one is.

Thanks again,
PES

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Ok, I dl this, added it to the folder and changed the allow main empires and now I have ships sets, plus the custom strats.

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Oh thanks! You are the man! So the problem is, as I suspected and Raapys figured out first. SE5 wants to read the Default AI strategies when it should be reading the Mod's strategies. I will pass this on to Aaron but it's low priority. I think us modders will have to live with this problem for a while. At least now we know how to fix it.

Kana January 24th, 2007 06:56 PM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

So we will pick up the PBW discussion after the next patch from Aaron, and an updated version of SFTC from PES...

Re: SFTC PBW Game

I almost have the patch ready to go. In fact I just started a new test game to try and hammer out any bugs I can find. It's up to you all but I don't get the impression another SE5 patch is coming out to soon. Thats my impression from the beta testing anyway.

Kana January 24th, 2007 08:46 PM

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Kwok mentioned somewhere that we could see 1.24 out on Monday...

Of course that stuff is never set in stone...

Re: SFTC PBW Game

Really I didn't see any indication like that from Aaron? Yo Cap! Wass up? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Anyway the next patch is ready to go for both versions. I may post the updates tonight or tomorrow.
