Mercenary Recruitment Question:

What happens if you have bid sufficient to win the recruitment auction, but during the turn you lost the province which you chose for location?

Re: Mercenary Recruitment Question:

I suppose either they disappear completely or remain available, and you're not charged.

They disappear completely... you're probably not charged, but I'm not 100% positive.

Well, I don't think it's me, I'm not quite 30.

I can assure you it's not you. It's not even me (at 37), and by a wide enough margin I'm sure.

I think by 'oldest' he means 'has been using the forum longest'.
Illwinter used to use a different forum back in the Doms1 days and at least a few people on here used to post there, so I doubt we'll be able to find out...

Well, I've started here at the SE4 forums, there are many oldtimers out there, so I've been on the Dom2 board since it was created !
The real Dom vets started on csipg ng, for example Pocus who played Dom long before me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Yeah, that's where I learned aboud Dom:PPP. I think it was a post by Gandalf; I downloaded the demo, ordered the full game, and I'm not sure I ever finished a game. But when I learned about Dom2, I had it preordered, and I've been a regular here ever since.

Re: Mercenary Recruitment Question:

To actually answer the question, if you win the merc bid but lose the province to the enemy, the mercenaries will show up all right and cheerfully enter the service of your enemy on your dime. I've had that happen to me. And no, you do NOT get your money back.

Huh, really ? I was totally wrong, shame to me, but this behavior is pretty ridiculous, it borders bugginess .. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: Mercenary Recruitment Question:

Or maybe the mercs just offer their service to the enemy in exchange for their lives being spared?

Re: Mercenary Recruitment Question:

More likely the mercenary company gets word that their services are required in province xyz and by the time they get there, the place has already changed hands. They show up, report to the commander who, being the shrewd fellow he is, gives them orders to go somewhere and do something since he finds out that the mercs have already been paid.

Remember, one turn being a month, there's plenty of leeway time-wise.

Re: Mercenary Recruitment Question:

I doubt I am the oldest regisitered, but I have been around a long time and own all three Dominions. Still, I get no respect...

I have gambled on merc in a contested province many times and lost more than a few. Still, it is usually worth it, as you really need those troops in that spot. Against the AI, you are likely to face a second attack right away, so even if you held the province, they will be coming again...

Nick_K January 30th, 2007 06:54 AM

Re: Mercenary Recruitment Question:

Movement of units into friendly provinces happens before combat though. If I'm facing a big AI attack and want to recruit mercs, I won't recruit them in a province I might lose. Instead, I recruit them in a safe adjacent one then move them into the contested province next turn. That way I also get them to hold off further AI expansion if I lose.
Of course, if you want to attack with the mercs, recruiting on the borders is best.
