Should I buy SE5?

I've been around here for quite some time, and I know I can trust the opinions of most of you guys. As such, I'm wondering if I should buy SE5 in its current state. I was a beta tester, but had to pretty much drop out a while before release due to an inability to find the time to adequately test as I felt I needed to. What I'd like to know is if SE5 is in a good enough condition now that it'd be a good replacement for SEIV, which, to be frank, it wasn't when I stopped testing.

Basically, what I'd like is for some of you to hit the highs and the lows, to give me an overview, if that isn't asking too much http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Thanks!

In a word; YES.

It should be in a good condition by the next patch, to be almost a good replacement for SEIV.

Wait, I have a question, if you were a beta tester didn't you already get a copy of the game? Or did you have to return it once you stepped down?

I just bought it. Review will no doubt be posted sometime.

If you hear a faint scream of agony, that's probably a 'No'.

I bought Se5 and I think it's a great game

1. It has more options then se4
2. It has realtime ship combat (no more shoot first you win)
3. It has a good ground combat (also realtime that you can SEE)
4. It will have a good A.I. (when it has all the bugs worked out that we found http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif)
5. It does have pretty graphics
6. And last but not least start practicing strategys for PBM http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Buy it, wait until the next patch and the Balance Mod update that follows it, then play.

Each patch is making it noticeably better and they just keep coming, so I think the future looks bright.

I still( and probably always will) prefer SE IV's System View and UI, though. And it has a great 'feeling' to it that SE V doesn't give me. But the positive sides in SE V are soon enough to at the least even it out.

Re: Should I buy SE5?

With some long-standing annoyances finally being fixed in recent betas, I'd say it will finally be playable with the next official patch. Especially with the 'Balance Mod'. So it was released about six months early. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif If you are considering buying it, I'd say any time now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Should I buy SE5?

I'd buy it now. No game stoppers with the 1.25 patch and corresponding Balance Mod by Kwok. There are a few unpatched problems, all minor, you can look around for the list, but all in all, it's worth to play it now to learn it and have fun.

By the time you get to know what you are doing, I'll bet the AI scripts will be beefed up and give more of a challenge. As it is, AI isn't all that tough to kill off...

Yes, I did receive a copy of the game, and had been patching it up with the beta patches up until the time that I stepped down. In fact, if I felt like it, I could probably still go to the beta testing site, download all the patches and have myself a free game. However, I'd feel bad doing that, since I haven't contributed in recent months. Basically, I could, but I don't want to http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Aye, buy it--it's really a lot of fun now. Much better than the initial launch version. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Alright, thanks a lot for all the answers guys. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

One more question: How's the AI? Any good mods for it yet, if it sucks as much as the SEIV AI did? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: Should I buy SE5?

The Good: The SE5 AI is more moddable and theoretically should be able to give a much greater challenge. In fact it should be able to give a custom feel per species with custom this and that and so forth.

The Bad: Stock AI sucks; worse than SE4 Stock AI in fact!

The Ugly: Other than it being a pink colored font? Which is pretty darn ugly! Only Kwok, myself, and one other person whom I am not too familiar with is working on the AI at this time and given the shock factor [of looking at the files for the first time] it will be only us three for a while.

Don't forget this key fact:
PBW supports SE5 games, so you can conveniently play against competent opponents.

I think you need to expand on this comment.

Are you responding to the titular question, or disagreeing with SJ's contention that SE V on PBW is convenient?

(I don't have an opinion yet, because I still don't own a system with the specs to run SE V.)

Re: Should I buy SE5?

I presume he means that there aren't enough opponents as of yet for many games to be played.

I mean... should I buy SE5? Yes, but not yet.

Today I found this german review:
http://gameswelt.de/artikel/index.ph...237&page=1
The lower portion mentions an upcoming german version... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

It will be localized? Sounds great...
Do you see this thumb up?
http://gameswelt.de/artikel/index.ph...amp;page=fazit

They classify SE5 "hardcore strategy" and ... not (yet) advisable for newcomers with a "short thread of patience". (Sounds like they are talking about me).

Re: Should I buy SE5?

They'd probably say the same about SEIV, PTF. Keep that in mind. Most of the reviews that bash that aspect don't like the micromanagement aspect, rather than any inherent flaw in the game.

Kamog February 14th, 2007 02:14 AM

Re: Should I buy SE5?

SEV is getting better and better with each patch, but there's still some bugs and unfriendly features of the user interface, so it's not quite as fun as playing SEIV was. (in comparison to the latest, patched version of SEIV.) I find that I can only play SEV for a few days in a row, until it becomes increasingly annoying because of many little things, and I have to stop and put it aside for a week or two. Then I forget about the frustrations and I go back to it.

There are quite a few over on spaceempires5.com... even a IRM mod beta that is available for play, with improved AI.

Ahhh... spaceempire5.com? I see that is the site I don't go to. Maybe I should check it [again] after all.
