Scenario Database
1 Attachment(s)
Started this little database to make finding interesting scenarios easier for everyone - all the scenarios are in now.
version 1.0 is attached as an XLS file, which just about any serious spreadsheet program can use; from there, it's just a matter of sorting the data to bring what you'd like to the top. It's arranged like so: Slot No--------------Title--------------------------------Battle/Front--------------Date------------Side 1----------Side 2---------Best Played As 36---------Goering Regiment at Uman---------Eastern Front 1941---------08/02/41---------Soviet---------German---------Germans 8---------------Dickens I Hill 445 -----------------------Italy 1944-------------03/15/44---------ANZAC------German 37--------Valentine's Day Air Mail-------------Pacific Theatre 1942--------02/14/42---------Japan---------Dutch 39-------------Bloody Ridge-----------------------Guadalcanal 1942---------09/13/42---------Japan---------USMC So if you only want to look for eastern front battles, just sort column C alphabetically, and look for the row of eastern front battles. You could then add a secondary sorting feature to sort them by "best as" to find those scenarios best played as either germans or soviets easily. |
Re: Scenario Database
Mark,
Thanks! Once your done could you repost or update? |
Re: Scenario Database
I just updated it, so far 227 out of 359 are in
|
Re: Scenario Database
Mark,
Cool, your smoking.... 104-236 are blank or you know that, sorry. Once your done do you mind if I convert this to a SQL Server Database? I could make some snappy web pages on it. I could not host it, but it would be cool to build it out in web format. |
Re: Scenario Database
That's an excellent idea, an online web-based database of stock SPWW2 scenarios..
One of the problems I'm coming across is how to classify the scenarios; I don't want to get too specific; and I wonder if it's more appropriate to write: "Poland 1944" "Germany 1945" "Hungary 1944" than simply "Eastern Front 1944/45" |

What would be needed to get this up and running online? |
Re: Scenario Database
Version 1.0 uploaded; using it as a base here are some rough statistics, I didn't count every thing so this is sort of incomplete:

Re: Scenario Database
OK, its just a start and more can be added. My skills are limited so don't expect anything too fancy or complicated (I'm using a scripting program for this with some minor html editing). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif
I can envision a DB for WinSPMBT like this and ones for the campaigns for each version as well. Anyone can edit this data at present so please don't play around in it too much. At some point I can add security levels (if we block visitor editing) and email notice whenever a file is edited. If we keep it open more or less then more people can plug stuff in and take off some of the workload. Questions and comments are welcome. WinSPWW2 Scenario Online Database |
Re: Scenario Database
It looks great. Thanks for doing the work.
A "nice to have" would be to lock the official scenarios but allow users to add their own. If so extra columns to allow others to rate the scenarios, to list any special requirements(e.g. custom oobs) and to specify where to get the scenario would also be useful. <edit> maybe a wiki format? |
Re: Scenario Database
Highly cool.
You know, adding the scenario descriptions to the database would only add what, 400 kb to them. I'll put in scenarios 0-5's descriptiosn and then we can see if it's good or if it becomes too unweildy that way as viewed. |
Re: Scenario Database
Hey, thank Mark for the work, I just imported his data. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif
Maybe I can find a way to incorporate it into my WinSP Wiki somehow. Surely these 2 can be set up to complement each other. Also maybe add an upload section for user created scenario's with an embedded DL link in the listing. |
Re: Scenario Database
The description field is there anyway to make it only viewable when you hit "view"?
because looking at scenario 001, it's a lot of text and messes up the formatting of the main database |
Re: Scenario Database
I imagine the TYPE field to be useful to help identify unique scenarios like:
INFANTRY - an infantry only battle, basically; with perhaps 1 or 2 tanks trundling around TANK - Tank only battle, with a few infantry squads around PARA - Basically, a scenario which starts with an airborne insertion AMPHIB - Basically, scenario which starts with a amphibious invasion. RIVER - Basically, dealing with a river crossing COMBINED - Combined Arms scenarios; a nice mix of every type of unit. COMMANDO - Scenarios designed to recreate commando raids, like St. Nazaire. |

All of this is very nice work guys. Very nice work. Don |
Re: Scenario Database
We could implement a dropdown menu OR just allow manually entered data.
What about; 1) # of Turns, 2) Map Size 3) Force Size (i.e. Small, Med, Large, etc OR go by echelon, I.E. Company, Battalion, etc)? The good thing is users can search by keyword and/or sort to find the criteria that interest them. Guess I better start reading the manual for this program, see what it can do. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: Scenario Database
Go by Echelon; even a very large map can be playable on company level.
As for map size and # of turns; I think it would be better for us to program a simplistic utility that reads the scenario files and extracts that data from the files to make our lives easier. |
Re: Scenario Database
This is quite fun, I can rapidly find all the scenarios with ANZAC troops by pounding in ANZAC in the search field and hitting enter, same with all other things; it even searches the scenario descriptions too, so when every description is in, we'll have a high fidelity of searching.

Re: Scenario Database
BTW, I've started to do the MBT scenario list too; but I'm struck with a hard problem; it's quite easy to quantify stuff that did happen, like Vietnam 1970, Falklands 1982, but what about the stuff that never happened?
WWIII scenarios; how should they get represented? WW3 - Norway 1985 or World War III 1985 |
Re: Scenario Database
As long as we get the fields we need set up we can always come up with naming conventions/criteria later. It would require us to go back and edit to keep things consistent but would lessen the upfront workload.
At some point I can also implement security levels for access an editing rights to protect what is there from the random visitor just mucking around. |
Re: Scenario Database
Should we just rename the "CAMPAIGN AREA" to "LOCATION"? Seems to indicate the same thing at least as I am seeing it.
Maybe move "BEST SIDE" and "TYPE" to the 2nd page (VIEW) then place "# TURNS" and maybe "SIZE" on the front page? |
Re: Scenario Database
DoubleD Excellent Work!
Have you updated your Excel further? I would still like to take a crack at this in SQL Server and ASP.NET. |
Re: Scenario Database
I have started modifying this database to see how the new fields look and get some feedback. I have also added a base format for the Campaign data.
Once these are fleshed out I'll use them as the template for the WinSPMBT stuff. <font color="red">EDIT: I'll try to leave this alone for a few days so I can get some feedback first before making any other changes.</font> http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif |
Re: Scenario Database
How about a field to link to the site where the actual file for DL can be found (via hyperlink) for those not included in the game itself? For those included the field entry would just mention its already in the game (via DL and CD, etc).

Re: Scenario Database
Just a suggestion but perhaps somewhat more neutral colours would make it easier on the eyes to read.

Re: Scenario Database
I was playing with the color settings just to see if they work and kind of "what do these buttons do stuff". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Scenario database thingy - cool stuff, muchachos !!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Re: Scenario Database
The reason why I prefer the "best as" field to be in the main field was I mainly play SP as a single player game against the AI, and I'd like to know which side a scenario plays best vs the AI.
