test this easy IRC link for BLITZ games channel

I thought this might help setup games.
Try out this link...
<a href="irc://irc.gamesurge.net/dominions" target="_blank">#Dominions</a>
Let me know if it works for you.

It works on one of my machines, but not on another machine. Both are WinXP and have the same browser. I havent pinned down the difference yet.

Works for me...

Re: try this link

any MAC people get it to work?
I suspect nearly all the Linux people will have it work.
It will probably be Windows people using plain old Explorer that will have problems.

Re: try this link

Doesn't work for me, on Windows using Explorer... well it's Explorer 7, but I can't actually find the About box to find exactly which version! Definitely 7 though, got tabs and all that. And hidden, confusing menus, hence me not being able to find the About box.

Doesn't work for me Gandalf. Firefox gave me an error message because I don't have an irc protocol friendly program installed.

Does not work for me. I would be up for a long game on 250-300 province map. Though i prefer all the races to be in the game.

Re: try this link

To find version in most programs, go to Help, then About.

My Firefox 1.5.0.11 on one machine was lost. Said I didnt have an IRC program setup. The same thing I got from Explorer.

My Firefox 2.0.0.2 on the other machine opened up a great little chat window and popped me right into the dominions channel. Im going to upgrade my other firefox now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: try this link

It worked on my Mac using the Safari browser and the Colloquy IRC client, and Ygorl has a Mac, too.

Wow... how nice. It opens up the IRC client and everythang.

Is there a way to make it work as a desktop shortcut?

Thanks.

Gandalf Parker March 21st, 2007 11:04 PM

Re: try this link

In windows I can create a shortcut then edit it to be the same URL. That will automatically open the browser and carry it out. It also works for files, email addresses, ftp, telnet. Tons of things.

Also, it doesnt have to be a pre-created channel like #dominions. If you wanted to start a game called zygotes then you could use the same url and replace the dominions channel with zygotes creating a seperate IRC chat for just that game. Listing the URL in the game thread would be pretty cool.

Re: try this link

Hmm, there must a way to do it on the Mac, just like I have a short cut "script" for logging onto server games. But, I relied on someone who knows Applescript to create it. One of these days I should teach myself a bit of Applescript magic.

Re: try this link

Oh... Gandalf... there is a rumor right now in the IRC room that you were there briefly.... before everyone could invite you to a blitz. Is this true or just a wicked rumor?

Gandalf Parker March 21st, 2007 11:31 PM

Re: try this link

Not a rumor. I jumped in and out of a few rooms on a few irc servers while I was testing this. Anything with a *dom* in the name that looked appropriate. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

But I didnt want to disturb the conversations so I jumped right out. I didnt realize that going in this way was going to announce me without letting me use my just-another-gamer nick. Im more used to seeing things from the server side.

PashaDawg March 21st, 2007 11:45 PM

Re: try this link

Just-another-gamer nick? Have you been masquerading, Gandalf? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Feel free to come chat sometime as thyself! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Re: try this link

You know, a nick instead of a channel op handle.
I was thinking of starting a permanent #dom3minions channel. But then I was thinking that I could just kick back up the IRC server and make irc.dom3minions.com work again

Re: try this link

Nice work on the link but might I suggest a more descriptive title for this thread? "Try this link" sounds like it could be anything and most likely something bad instead of the handy shortcut you made!

Thanks for making this for us dorks!

Point taken. I admit that as a moderator if I saw "try this link" I would have rushed in to see if it was nasty. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I changed the title.
thanks

Does anyone use Netscape anymore? Maybe I should download it and test it also
