Newb Network EA Aran (Full and Playing)

I got pwned super-early in first MP game I'm hosting ( what a newb http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif ), so I'd like to get a new Network game going. If you're a Newbie and missed the last one here's your chance!

The details:

Version 3.06
Early Era
Aran
Quickhost
10 Hall of Fame
Renaming allowed
Game will autostart once 6 players are in.
Hope to play about a turn a day.

Connect to: bemura.dyndns.org, port 8098

Once the game starts the status will be available at:

http://bemura.dyndns.org/b3/scores.html

By the way the command I'll use to start the game (minus the master password) is:

dom3 -T -S --port 8098 --noclientstart -q --uploadmaxp 6 --scoredump --mapfile aran.map --renaming --era 1 -s b3

Please respond to this thread in addition to joining.

We have:

tromper - Ermor
thejeff - Vanheim
Eressil3 - Lanka
Thrawn - Arco
vfb - Marverni
K - Sauromatia
Tequilich - Mictlan

Wellll, I still consider myself a newbie and all. I had my head handed to me early in my first MP game, and am in two others but not exactly. Uh. Winning or anything. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif And I haven't played on the Aran map before.

So if that's newb enough for ya, I'd like to join up.

vfb March 28th, 2007 11:20 AM

Re: Newb Network EA Aran (Open)

Oh yeah, it's no problem! I had my head handed to me too.

Anyone else who thinks they are a newbie, probably is. So feel free to join up. I don't mind getting eliminated, and hopefully I will learn from my old mistakes. I'll just make new mistakes instead http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Please post your nation selection though, so everyone can see who's who.

thejeff March 28th, 2007 11:24 AM

Re: Newb Network EA Aran (Open)

Also sort of a newbie. I've played a lot of SP and an Mp game or 2 in Dom2, but this would be my first Dom3 MP game.

So, if you'll have me, I'm thinking Vanheim, but I want to take another look at the map before I commit.

vfb March 28th, 2007 11:34 AM

Re: Newb Network EA Aran (Open)

Yes, that's fine too, even though I lose to the Vanheim AI sometimes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif.

Other people thinking of joining: if you've played a few MP games, that's fine. As long as you think you're a newbie, that's good enough.

Oh, I do like to play in character though. So I will frequently spout nonsense at you.

And this is not a ladder game. Defeating me or other newbs means you are only at least equal to the Vanheim AI http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. So please join with the intention of having fun.

Since there seems to be more interest than I thought, I've joined the game myself to ensure getting a spot.

I am Marverni.

Who has joined as Ermor?

Not joining, just poking in where I shouldnt.
You might consider

--statfile
gives a nice short text file that gives you an easy way to see who turned in, who went ai, and who staled. You can also toss it into the webdir with scores

--hours 24 (or 36 or 72 or something)
a timeout on turns will save you some hassles later if no one has complaints about it. The -q (quickhost) is usually what really happens for quite awhile into the game anyway.

-d then redirect to file can be very informative about the game. But it gets big fairly quick. You can also kick it up to -dd -ddd or even as high as -dddddddd but I wouldnt recommend it unless you have alot of harddrive.

you might consider enabling a dummy mod. Particularly if you expect a long game. It allows bug-fixes later.

--preexec pre.sh (or pre.bat)
--postexec post.sh (or post.bat)
even if these are empty they will be in place for taking on some management duties later.

Ive gotten to the point that I put most of those (and masterpassword of course) into every game I start even if I dont think I will use them when I start the game. Some can be added later, some cant.

Oh and using
dom3 --verify b3
is a handy seperate command to try. It gives you a tiny text file about the game file (fthrland) and each 2h file. It can find version problems and can tell you if the same person is playing multiple nations

You are very welcome to join, K, and any open race is fine. I learned a lot about playing against Lanka by being trounced by you in the first game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

I turned this on in my other game and stats.txt always looks like this:
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
Statistics for game 'b2' turn -1

Abysia played this turn
C'tis played this turn
Agartha played this turn
R'lyeh played this turn
Lanka played this turn
</pre><hr />

Weird. I originally started that server from within the gui, then switched to command line. I'm guessing that's why it's broken.

So I wrote the attached extremely ugly bash script to put status info into the web page, and just cronned it up.

Will this work if I turn it on later?

Thanks for all the other tips too!

I hope everyone was ready?

Hmmm, K had claimed Sauromatia, but hadn't uploaded yet.
I guess Tequilich took the 6th spot.

Do we want to restart? K?

Not a problem. It's a first turn.
Move the scout, prophetize and recruit. 5 minutes, tops.

I've deleted the game, and restarted the server. I added one more slot for Tequilich, I hope no-one objects. The players are:

tromper - Ermor
thejeff - Vanheim
Eressil3 - Lanka
Thrawn - Arco
vfb - Marverni
K - Sauromatia
Tequilich - Mictlan

Would all the above players please reconnect to the server and join the game, thanks.

I am even more of an HTML newb than a Dom3 newb, so I've attached the html file to this post. Can anyone see what's wrong?

Victory conditions are default. Whatever that is! I assume it means kill everyone, destroy their dominion, or make them surrender in a fit of despair.

Is there anything I can do on the server to fix this?

On another note, I now see the 'crowns' on the map. I don't know why they are there, and they aren't just part of the .tga image. You can see the command I started the game with in the first post of this thread, and I didn't do anything to turn victory points on.

Re: Newb Network EA Aran (Full)

At this point, nothing other than another restart.

For future reference, using a different name for the game would have prevented it.

If I hadn't been last it wouldn't have mattered either, because it wouldn't have hosted right away.

Those crowns aren't on the map in a local test game I started. I don't know what they are. Someone take one of those provinces and see if there's anything special there.

The latest report shows you with 1 Victory Point, and you just took a province with a crown, right?. So, it's a Victory Point.

That is kind of weird, because, this is exactly how I started the game, minus the master password: <font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
dom3 -T -S --port 8098 --noclientstart -q --uploadmaxp 6 --scoredump --mapfile aran.map --renaming --era 1 -s b3
</pre><hr />

Can anyone help explain how victory points could have become enabled? Or how we can find out if there is a victory point condition, and if so, what it is?

thejeff March 31st, 2007 09:53 AM

Re: Victory Point Help Please

I could duplicate this starting a network game through the command line.

When I start a game actually using Victory Points, they're listed in the game settings and shown in the score graphs so I think we're OK. I had to go into work for a few hours this morning, but I'll check with a test game this afternoon that taking them doesn't actually win the game.

Aren't victory point provinces supposed to raise dominion? I wonder if these do?

Yes, as if you had built a temple there, and your dominion was level 5.

Quote:

I have no idea if we'll be able to tell. Dominion spread is based on probability, so you could be getting either lucky or unlucky. I guess your best plan is just to hold on to that province and hope it's doing you some good http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Unlucky it is! The game's running with default indys.

But just think of all those knights you'll be able to churn out once you take that province! (I always find elephants and knights sitting around in farms, though, and end up being able to build about 1/3rd of an elephant per turn.)

As I'm sure you know, sometimes you start off in nice territory, some times you don't. My last MP game, my castle bordered an ocean province and a swamp. That was it, 2 provinces. I took the swamp after a massive battle, and broke out of my confinement into ... a vast stretch of wasteland. I was eliminated pretty fast, but I had fun though! (I was Agartha and avoided the ocean province because my scouts said it contained Sea Trolls and a Kraken. But then I was absolutely forced to take that province later, and it was a much easier battle than I thought. Live and learn I guess. Or die and learn, in my case!)

War!

Since Sauromatia has chosen to make our quarrel public, Vanheim will respond in kind:

Though he now uses the title of "The Sauromation Resistance", this war began with an unprovoked attack on a province we had only recently brought under our banner. This mere days after we had sent an offer of peace.

As he sent no reply or even an honest challenge, but only a many headed monster and a score of archers, we had no choice but to respond in kind. We swept his forces from our land and pursued them into his.

Now he is desperate and begs for others to take up what he began and cannot hope to finish alone.

We admit our losses were greater than expected. His poisoned arrows seem to bring death even when they cannot pierce our armor and some of our brave Vanherse have choked on the noxious fumes of his monsters. Though in truth the monsters rarely last long enough to do much harm.

This month he emptied his capital and was able to defeat my vanguard at great cost. Reinforcements will be sent. This loss will be avenged.

The Sauromatian Resistance does not believe that an oppressor should be given an opportunity to flourish. Their feeble attempts to woo us into a false sense of security were seen as the act of war that they were.

Join us! Free Aran of the Van aggressors! We have lost ten brave Sauromation fighters to the Evil Ones, but the deaths of nineteen of their devil Vans and destruction of their profane invasion force is worth the sacrifice, and the victory here shows that the light of freedom will be won. We have found their weakness, and we shall exploit it.

Death to the Van!

Re: War!

Hey guys. About the crowns - I don't know why, but they've been on every MP game I've played. They're VPs, but if you don't have a victory point victory condition they don't count for anything except a slight contribution to dominion spread.

If you did have VPs as a victory condition you'd know because the VPs would be shown with the other graphs, along with a horizontal line marking the number required to win.

You can see the contribution to dominion spread by right clicking on a province with a temple, then clicking the Temple button in the bottom right. It tells you the number of candles produced on average per turn from each source, multiplied by 10 to give whole numbers. Victory points are shown on there as a source of dominion, I think.

Re: War!

"Preemptive Resistance", then? It seems the Witch Kings speak with forked tongues.

Justify your attack how you will, the Vanir are glad to fight when given cause. We will cut your archers down even while foul poison burns in our veins.

And ten brave fighters? We counted only six, though four of the poisonous monsters were also slaughtered. Ridding the world of those things may have been worth the cost in Vanir blood.

In contrast, Marverni's rapid early expansion came to a crashing halt when it became embroiled in conflict with other nations. Our researchers have all had to take up part time employment as clergy, to plead with our Pretender to forgive us for our imprudent strategies, and return to Aran.

Sauromatia has fallen. The Serpent King fled from battle and died in the wilderness. The Witch Kings have been rooted out and the flayed skins they used for banners burned in a funeral pyre.
The attack on Vanheim has been repaid tenfold.

Now, perhaps the Vanir can have peace again, and bring the word of Shaiar to the heathen lands that have been allowed to remain unenlightened while we dealt with the Serpents.

OOC,

A good fight, K. I was actually worried for a bit early on. The hydras were less of a threat than I expected, but the poison arrows were deadly.
I'm not sure what anti-Van research you were planning, so I can't say if it would have helped. Vanheim is a serious bless rush position and the only real counter this early is another bless nation or a serious SC pretender. Vanheim may well not win, the late game isn't strong, and I'm not very good at it, but it's very hard to keep them from taking out at least the first target.
Thanks for volunteering to be that first target http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
