time to try MP?

Just thought Id drop a note here in case people are debating. I see at least 3 open games and one request for a sub in the MP subforum.

Re: time to try MP?

- Go to http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/blitz_chk.cgi
- Check the era of the game you want enter (it must be an "OPEN" one)
- Note the port used
- Make a pretender for that era
- Network -> ip = game.dom3minions.com -> port = the one you checked before
- choose your nation according to your pretender design
- when your pretender is uploaded, hit disconnect to let other people join the game (the game will start with 4 players)

You can check http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/blitz_chk.cgi to see who played his turn and who didn't. The red star means "waiting for the player turn".

If you are using windows you can make a shortcut for that game. In the property dialog box write something like :

"C:\Program Files\dominions3\dom3.exe" --ipadr game.dom3minions.com --port 8195 --tcpclient

Obviously you have to use your own parameters.

Re: time to try MP?

That page also has a link called "how to join a game"
http://game.dom3minions.com/how-to.html

Things are abit differently if its a PbEM game (turns sent in by email or ftp). Or eve on some other peoples systems. But each game tends to have a thread and the people are usually very helpful

There is also an IRC channel (chat room) where you can ask questions. Getting to it is different for each operating system but if you want to try this link then it MIGHT work depending on your machine.

Re: time to try MP?

Again we have a small-map blitz asking for substitute players. An era 1 (early age game) is looking for replacements for Niefelheim and Ermor.

If you have wanted to try out multiplay, this is a great way to do it. Its a small-map blitz so it wont drag out for months. If you lose then you have an excuse of late start and someone elses design. And if you win, then you can xrow quite nicely. In any case the other players will be grateful for anything abit more surprising and challenging than just turning these nations over to the AI.

If you are interested, respond to this thread in the "Dom 3 Multiplayer and AARs" subforum.

How fast do blitz games move? More than one turn a day?

Shovah32 April 28th, 2007 09:40 PM

Re: time to try MP?

That depends. Many blitz games are over in less than a day so you be the judge.

Re: time to try MP?

It depends on the players. Blitz mostly refers to it having the ABILITY to move fast by having -Quickhost on and/or being a small map. The games on my server (like this one) start with quick and 24 hours which means the game will host when all players have turned in their turns OR 24 hours if someone lags.

A game with everyone in the same time zone can do 50 turns in a day, one with people all over the planet tend to do a 1 turn each day.

What I create a new game (it appears on http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/blitz_chk.cgi as an OPEN game) then someone often starts a thread on it in the MP subforum. Sometimes they request only players from a certain time zone.

I'm currently in my first ever MP game(Utterdark) and I'm trying to get my feet wet before pursuing other MP games. I don't want to fall into my old "Archon syndrome" like I did back in my Commodore64 days. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif

Ahhh Commodore64.
It always amazes me that the Dominions forum is one of the few game forums that I dont feel out of place because of my age. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

You might be surprised to find out what Dominions was originally written on and in what language.

Re: time to try MP?

Its still better than forums full of the "I grew up on XBox" crowd. Not that those are bad, I just dont like being surrounded.

Re: time to try MP?

Wow, to grow up on xbox you would have to be like 10? You need to stay off the kiddy forums imo http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
