A large map (200 x 160) featuring a fictional iraqi town on the Tigris and the surrounding countryside.
An extremely extensive modification of a map included in the game. |
Re: Iraq Map
Wow! That's quite a map, Marcello! I'm impressed!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Re: Iraq Map
Since it was appreciated I have begun working on an improved version. The uniform red rough of the SAM battery mountain would be replaced by a mixed pattern of desert rough, red rough and earth (I was dying to use red rough but it is a bit cheesy in this contest). Minor changes here and there to remove the hexagonal pattern still evident in some areas and assorted small improvements. If anybody can point mew some websites with a good collection of iraqi landscape pictures I would appreciate. So far I have only found small collections but I do not have much time for extensive google-fu.

Re: Iraq Map
The map was based on map n. 71, although if compare it you will find that there are not a lot of hexes left untouched. It is supposed to represent a city in an alternate history, more economically developed, Iraq. It is made to go hand in hand with my iraqi OOB mod.
Speaking of historical maps I have started drawing an other large (200 x 160) map. This is supposed to represent a portion of open desert (although there are a few structures) along the Highway of Death, between Camp Buehring and Al Jahra. It is based on a high resolution Google Earth picture. Don't hold your breath though, as at the present time real life and the aforementioned mod come first. |
Re: Iraq Map
The new version of the map is up. In addition to the SAM battery hill the access to the railroad station has been improved, as well as various others minor modifications.

Re: Iraq Map
Love the map.
Inspired me to try and actually make a scenario. Now if I can just get the game to cooperate with my "brilliant" ideas *chuckles* |

"Inspired me to try and actually make a scenario."
With what sort of forces? |
Re: Iraq Map
The general background is in 2017 the government in Iraq falls in a coup. Iran, PLO, Al Quida, and other "extremist" factions rush in to support the new government. US Marines and a US Army Striker unit (supported by a few heavier forces) are sent in to secure the city and rescue anyone from the former government still alive.
The plan is for the Marines to make a demonstration of crossing the Tigris while the Army races in from the west to secure the Army Base and SAM site. Then the Marines will cross the river and together they'll clean up the city. Unfortunately just as the initial air strike is hitting the SAM site the Army manages to get itself ambushed (off map). The Marines rush most of their more mobile forces to help bail out the Army (couldn't manage to fit three full battalions into the 500 unit limit, so they'll have only two and not much transport). Initially most of the artillery and air support is busy helping the Army out, tho more and more will become available in later turns. To add to the "fun" a fast motorized column from Iran is approaching the city from the east and the last thing anyone wants is a large number of fanatics to get into the city proper, house-to-house fighting is very expensive casualty wise. So the Marines are left with a river crossing VS mostly militia/guerilla/fanatic forces backed with a few high tech (well, as high as Iraq has) units, without "proper" artillery/air support. The crossing shouldn't be too bad but the city is swarming with 1 to 8 man units armed with rifles, RPG's, and improvised explosives. And they have to rescue the government before they're executed and keep the Iranians from entering the city. |

Re: Iraq Map
My next project is a reworking of map n. 70 An Nasiriya.
It will be modified into a fictional map of a small iraqi town on the Euphrates and the surrounding area. |
Re: Iraq Map
Here is the new map. It is a large (200 x 160) map featuring a variety of environments, from flat open desert to dense palm groves, including a moderate size city, a few small villages, a river and dry wadi.

Currently I am planning to make an improved version to fix some details, as I did for the first map.

Re: Iraq Map
For the present time I think I am done with large fictional maps, although I could make more in the future.
I am thinking about making small maps representing real places in Iraq. Size would be 40 x 40 Max, as larger non fictional maps need too many measurements and compromises for the map drawing process remaining enjoyable for me. If somebody in these forums has an iraqi neighbourhood, village, spot etc. he would like to see represented I am open to suggestions; a google earth placemark would be appreciated. |

Here is a small map (20 x 30) representing a slice of iraqi countryside. It has been created using google earth.
It contains palm groves, scattered buildings, secondary roads etc. It should be good for small scale infantry actions. |
