4 player MA PBEM game - started
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I've been testing my automated PBEM program for a bit now, and it all seems to be working well, so I thought I'd start up a new game on it. I've noticed there's not been very many games started recently for newish players, so this could fill that slot (I won't be playing in it). Because I've always enjoyed Gandalf's "blitz" games (they're not generally played as blitzes, but that's what they're called), I thought I'd copy his settings for this one - hence it's called "GreyWizard" in tribute http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif . To join the game, just e-mail a pretender file to pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net, and make sure the subject of the e-mail is "GreyWizard". Also post here to say you've joined. You can look at who's joined so far at www.llamaserver.net. Settings: 4 players, 50 provinces Using the worthy heroes mod (just gives a few more interesting heroes to each nation). You can get it here. Okay, please go ahead and join! Edit: Thought I might add a little guide as to how to create and find your pretender file, being as it isn't obvious if you haven't played a PBEM before. You can't make your pretender through the normal "Create a new game" route. Instead from the main menu, you need to click "Game tools" and then "Create a pretender god". When you've finished a file will be created in the folder dominions3/savedgame/newlords. If, say, you were creating a god for Marignon, it would be called mid_marignon_0.2h. This is the file you need to send. There's no need to put a password on your pretender, since you'll be the only one with access to your turn files. If you do put a password on though, please PM it to me so I can find a sub if, say, you disappear (happens occasionally). |

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Hi guys,
Sorry, you have to make sure that your e-mails to the server have the game name ("GreyWizard") as the subject line, and nothing else. The server received a couple of e-mails, but it doesn't know what to do with them unless the subject line's right, and it hasn't kept them so I can't sort them out myself. Hopefully the e-mails it sent back would have explained - anyway, sorry about that. Just send them again with 'GreyWizard' as the subject. |
Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Okay, we're just waiting for one more player now.
Also, I've now attached the map to the first post. Download the zip, and put both of the files in it into your dominions3/maps folder. |

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Oh, the map file crashes the game because it points to GreyWizard4.rgb when it is actually named GreyWizard.rgb. Easy to fix yourself of course.

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Darn, I there are only border mountains on this map meaning no wonderful peg-castles for Ulm.

Darn, I there are only border mountains on this map meaning no wonderful peg-castles for Ulm. Could you perhaps generate a map with the real mountain switch, or am I asking for too much? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Um, I don't know. How do I do that?
I've fixed the map in the first post, but I'm happy to change it to have real mountains (I didn't realise you could have unreal mountains). |
Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Border mountains are fine and all, but as they don't hinder movement as regular mountains and don't count as mountains when you are building fortresses they kind of takes away a bit of the game. There should of course be border mountains where there are border mountains, but I don't think the map generator takes notice to that (and how could it?).
To get regular mountains, uncheck the border mountains box prior to the map generation. Thank you very much for doing this. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Okay, well after an educational half-hour I've edited the original map file so that border mountains are replaced with real mountains. I think that's the best of both worlds, so that the mountains still provide natural barriers and choke points, but also work properly. I've changed the first post so it has the new, fixed version of the map.

Sorry for putting you through all this. But maybe the knowledge was worth it? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Oh definitely, it was a useful thing to know. I've been wondering for ages why my men could sometimes walk through mountain provinces unimpeded.

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Cool, looks like the game's started. Remember you can check who's taken their turn any time at www.llamaserver.net .
Post if anyone has any problems. Remember to get the worthy heroes mod and the map before you play your first turn, and also to send your .2h file rather than your .trn file back to the server (just trying to pre-empt anything going wrong, since these all seem to be common problems). |
Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
PS The first turn has a 48 hour deadline just in case there's any problems, but hopefully it'll go much sooner than that because it shouldn't take people long to do their turns. After that it'll be on 24 hours.

Re: 4 player MA PBEM game - recruiting
Ha ha ha! The hydras desperately (?) blocking the entrance to the fortress against a much greater force, and succeeds, reminds me so much of Heroes of Might and Magic II. Man I love that game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
