OT: Narf has no more wisdom...Teeth. Owie Owie

The worst part of tooth extractions where you get knocked out is not the actual surgery (You literally don't even notice that), but the rather nasty pain afterward. Two Tylonol 30's and still feeling it.

Time to find out how long I have to lie down for. And hey, at least I got a few naps out of this. *Brags about pain tolerance...Not really. Pain makes me fall asleep. My mind says 'I don't want to deal with this' and shuts down*

Agreed. But look on the bright side. You get the choice to have that fun knockout gas, that makes you laugh at anything!

...I do? No-one said anything about that!

(Besides, laughing would probably be painfull right now.)

Dentistry must differ in different countries. Last time I had a tooth out I only had a local anasthetic and it didn't really hurt afterwards. Granted the tooth in question had died (getting a chip in your tooth that reveals the nerve is not pleasant)

Another neat thing is that it makes you completely immune to pain. It took me 5 minutes to realize that the pinching on the side of my gum wasn't them poking around with their tools, it was them cutting open my gum and taking a drill to one of my teeth.

Re: OT: Narf has no more wisdom...Teeth. Owie Owie

yeah, you don't feel a thing. All I knew was he was tugging at the tooth with a clamp. You think he's trying to get a good grip and then he says he's pulled it out.

I went in for the knockout because the local didn't work as well as it should have. I was still feeling pain.

About a year or two ago, I had three wisdom teeth taken out all at once...not a pleasant experience. They just gave me a local anesthetic, plus some pill that made everything...a little strange. Time was really compressed, it felt like 5 minutes but was more like 45.

After that, they didn't even send me home with narcotic painkillers, only the wussy Tylenol 3's, which didn't do a damn thing for the pain.

Kwok, push for them to give you the narcotics, would make the recovery a lot nicer! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago. They knocked me out completely because they also had to take a 5th tooth out that came in in the wrong spot.

I was loopy for a few hours after the surgery. It felt really strange when they pulled the stuffing out of my mouth when I woke up. But overall it was a relatively pain free procedure.

They sent me home with powerful painkillers, but I forget what they were called.

The very next day I was cutting down trees and acting like normal.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled I had put it off so long that the after surgery pain was actually less than the before surgery pain.

Well, 32+ hours and my gums are still bleeding. Trust me, you don't want to hear more than that. I'm headed into the doctor.

My first wisdom tooth was pretty painless. But then, that dentist was so good I actually nearly fell asleep during the teeth-cleaning. Seriously, if I was even a little bit more relaxed that time, I would have been out like a light.

Over the past month, I've had a total of six teeth pulled. My dentist told me that if the bleeding didn't stop within three hours, I should try wrapping a teabag in gauze, then wetting it and packing it against the gum. The tannic acid in the tea is supposed to help stop the bleeding.

(I'm not sure how much it helped, though. I didn't stop bleeding either time until sometime after I went to bed that night.)

Yeah, we called the dentist and he recommended tea bags. They do seem to be working.

When you get teeth pulled, no that doesn't hurt much. When you have your gum cut open, then they use a drill to destroy the teeth into tiny little pieces, then they scrape out the remains... THAT HURTS.

When the pain medication isn't working right, that hurts too.

A buddy of mine is going to have surgery in the next few weeks on his teeth.

A few years ago he feel asleep at the wheel and had a major accident (over $500,000 in total hospital bills). The accident jammed his top front teeth up into his gums. They are just now going to repair that.

So they are going to go in and cut the gums and bring his teeth back down to where they used to be. It sound very painful.

Can we talk about other painful ailments?

I don't have Teeth trouble but I do occasionally get Iritis where my cornea gets stuck to the lense in my eye. Then when light hits it it tries to dilute but remeber it is stuck together. Extremely unpleasant, I would say on par to having teeth out. Goes for weeks at a time.

Tooth surgery falls under the same category as other orthopedic (joint) repairs - 1/3 do well, 1/3 have a different sort of pain 1/3 have worse pain when all is said and done.

That sounds accurate. My grandfather had knee surgery a couple or three years ago, I think just a half replacement. Today, three years later, he's undergone another couple surgery's to try to fix whatever's wrong, and he basically can not walk at all, due to the massive pain. The surgery didn't help anything at all; it made the problem worse, and has him basically off his feet, forever.

Those odds aren't that great. It sounds like a person would be just as well not having the surgery at all and living with the existing condition.

I've only had 1 wisdom tooth removed. The only reason I got it yanked was due to a very nasty infection that had me in severe pain every day for about a year and a half. I've also had another tooth removed. It's not half bad to be honest. All they gave me was laughing gas and the numbing stuff. Never gave me any pain killers either :-( Though, with the 2nd tooth it really wasn't that bad, after you get the first one and a wisdom at that I think your pain tolerance goes up a few notches. Still have my other 3 coming in, here's to hoping I don't need them out.
