Sub wanted for 1v1 duel
 
Hi,

I've been playing in a 4-player game recently as Pythium, and me and my ally Arco have beaten the other players and conquered the entire map. I really want to carry on playing to the death against Arco, but unfortunately the Arco player no longer has the time (having understood the plan was to stop playing once there was just the two of us left he's joined some other games).

So, I'm looking for a sub for Arco. It should be a fun game to take over. It is turn 55 and we have high level research, but the map is only small (50 provinces), so it shouldn't be too much hard work to run Arco's empire. It's probably quite a rare chance to play late game without having a ridiculously large empire to coordinate.

We're pretty much equal. Arco has more provinces, and our incomes and gem incomes are similar. I'm slightly ahead on research, but Arco's army seems to be bigger (on the graphs it is similar, but most of mine are black hawks!). I have also seen a couple of powerful-looking thugs in Arco's armies.

I think it will be an exciting game, hope someone will take over!

I've never played Arco in Dom3 (maybe in Dom2, but I don't remember), so I'd like to see what they can do in the endgame. I could take over if you want and if the turn timer is not too strict - it could be that I can do three turns a day, it could be that I'll take more than 24 hours for one.

I am the former arco player. Arco has a good position, though not a superior one. Arco does have some very good thugs!

You also have a f9 pretender that can blow stuff up, and uses flaming arrows to good effect.

Unfortunately, I am hosting the Epic Heroes game now, am still going strong in Alpaca, and also have a hand in Velusion's game. Had I known of the intent to slug it out, i would have passed on the big game.

But I do not have time for 4 games atm. Good luck.

Cool that'd be good. The game is being played on the llamaserver so I'll ask llamabeast to send you that latest turn file. It's PBEM so do you want to PM me the email address you'll using and I'll pass it on? Else you could just PM llamabeast. The timer is set at 24 hr at the moment but I'm happy to extend it to 48. The map is attached to the original post which is "4 player MA PBEM game - started" (I'd link it but I can't work out how to do it, if you search for all my posts it'll show up).

Look forward to playing with you, it should be a good game

Okay, I think I have everything, it's cool.

Looks interesting, the game could really swing either way. I'm a little bit intimidated by your research and ongoing gem advantage, despite you having less provinces than I do. There are still three AI forts left, too.

So are we immediately at war now? Or do I get a three-turn preparation phase without any malign action against each other as if we now end an alliance pact? *puppy eyes*

I happen to have a question. A couple of provinces here say that a level 2 blood mages searched for sites. Where is he? Was it some kind of mercenary?

This game seems to suffer from the 1.06 worthy heroes mod. I got a couple of heroes with two heads, another one with two body slots. (so I can equip two armors at once, whoohoo!) I suggest that we update to the 1.07 version to fix those things? Oh, and please turn off the timer until we're ready in that case.

I might be wrong (and I'd be very interested to hear if I am), but I don't think you can upgrade a mod mid-game.

Well, I suppose I could overwrite the file heroes1_6.dm with the new version. Seems a bit crude though, and I'm not sure it would fix the units already in the game. And it might cause difficulties with other games using 1.6. Hmm, maybe I should ask about this on the main forum.

Well I will look into it when I get the chance, but do you reckon you can cope with the funny slots for the moment? Just both of you promise not to use them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

That is exactly what Edi suggests. Do you have 3.06 clients using the WH 1.6 mod? If not, then you should upgrade. If you do, then you should ask in the mod thread if those could run into trouble.

It's not that I want to exploit this, but rather that those slots are wrongly assigned other slots (usually misc, I believe) that one is losing this way, too.

Okay, well I've overwritten 1.6 with 1.7 and changed the version numbers then. Will you guys need to do the same thing?

Hmm, just to minimise confusion I will put my 'fixed' version of 1.6 here. Please unzip this and stick this in your mods folders.

I have another game about to transfer onto the llamaserver which is using heroes v1.6. I suppose I will get them to do the same thing.

No wait, now I understand why I got a "second" body slot. I already have overwritten the 1.6 version of the mod with the 1.7 version. Then I unequipped one of the two helmets that my hero was wearing, and I gained another body slot. That's cause all the slot are shifted. Then I unequipped the armor and gained a feet slot. Then I unequipped the boots and finally got the third misc slot that I'm supposed to be having. And yes, Xietor equipped the heroes with two helmets.

Sorry guys, I've decided I have to switch back to Worthy Heroes 1.6. See the Alpaca post if you're interested. Having clashing versions of the mod led to a startlingly different alternate future (battle reports which were in fact a great victory for one side looked like a crushing defeat).

I'll attach the original heroes1_6.dm. Sorry about this.

lch, I've concluded that I can't really update mods mid-game, because the players will all then need to upgrade too, which will propagate problems to all the other games they're in. Any thoughts on the matter?

Hey Lily, no problem, I hope you're feeling better. I'm fine with taking on hostilities on turn 60. And I am even more intimidated by your gem income now that I went remote site searching with lots of mages this turn and got almost nothing out of it - either you went for Acashic Record all the way, or all the good gem-producing sites are up there in the north, or both. This is going to be interesting, let's see what happens.

llamabeast, everybody in every of your games should update to the fixed version 1.7, unless you are still hosting some games which are using the 3.06 game version (or if you like two-headed heroes). If all of your games are 3.08 then it makes no sense to keep 1.6, everybody should use 1.7 instead.

Well if they were only in games on my server that would be fine. But if they do that, and they are in games on other servers where they are still using 1.06, then that will mess them up. Obviously if every single game changed that would probably be better. But I don't really think I can demand that - pretty much every MP dominions player would have to download my fixed version if there were to be no problems anywhere.

It's no problem for me, but I think the idea is that everybody should upgrade to 3.08 and WH 1.7, since tons of bugs have been fixed there. I host another game which uses the WH mod, too, and I've done the upgrade, I expect that everyone else should do the same. Having to rename the 1.7 mod to the 1.6 mod is of course not making much sense if you want to restrict yourself to a particular version, so I'll use a filename like "worthyheroes.dm" in the future which I can upgrade without troubles. You're the host, you decide - I don't think that I desperately need the third misc slot.

Yeah, sorry lch, I'm afraid you will have to make do with 2-headed heroes for this game.

In future I think perhaps I will make a custom mod for each game (in the same way as you suggest having "worthyheroes.dm", which I can then upgrade with impunity.

It would be better actually if Turin released all versions of his mod with the same name, so that everyone upgraded by default, without us having to release our own modified versions.

Incidentally, do you know if the #version tag in the mod makes any difference to anything? If so how does it work?

Edi claims that you need to keep the version tag as is, if you change anything in the mod, but I can't say the same. In my experience all you need to keep is the filename to update. You can even create and use mods without a version tag, after all.

Urgh. I forgot that we reverted to the non-3.08 compatible version of the worthy heroes mod (I knew I forgot something, even after double- and triplechecking my turn...) and now my two heroes both lost their armor, shoes and one misc item. Since there have been no fights at all, could we redo the turn after I assign the items to those wh 1.6 slots?

Another option would be the following:
- get the game to use a preexec and postexec script
- in the preexec script, overwrite the wh 1.6 mod with the wh 1.7 mod
- in the postexec script, overwrite it with the wh 1.6 mod again

This way you could keep compability with wh 1.6 in your other games and have us use the fixed 1.7 version. Sound good?

EDIT: I think I read somewhere else that llamabeast is away till monday. Do you agree to redo the turn when he gets back, Lily, without us two changing anything to our orders, but him using the workaround I presented above?

I am away but have occasional internet access, so I've rerun the turn as a one-off using 1.7. I'm a bit tipsy, so hopefully I've done it right.

Anyway, the preexec/postexec idea is a good one, and I'll bear it in mind - but for this game I think you'll just have to deal with the dodgy slots, cos I'm not going to have a chance to think about it for a bit. I'm sure it won't make too much difference to this game.

No, I didn't mean it was baleful for you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I just meant that a helmet slot surely can't be much worse than a misc slot for your two(?) heroes.

Anyway, sorry but no, it'll be hosting using the normal 1.6 from now on, so you should switch your gear over. I like your pre/postexec idea, but I just won't have a chance to sort it for a bit.
