OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Apparently the end is near - 22 episodes in a final season of BSG will start in November and into 2008.
Battlestar gets grounded by SciFi While I am sad, I agree that the show has been headed towards a close. Now with the events of the finale (last 5 minutes) of the end of Season 3, I think they are probably making the right decision. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
That is too bad, but with the way last season ended it may be a good thing.
The revealing of the final five was just dumb. Well, not the revealing itself, but who they were. Too many plot holes there for it to be those five. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I missed most of this past season due to having to lose my satellite service. So I've missed the majority of season 3. I'll have to wait for the boxed set to come out and see what I've missed. I just hope, though, that when they do have a finale, they have a finale. I don't want to be left hanging in the wind wondering if the Colonial fleet ever found earth. It would be nice if they incorporated some of what I heard of Richard Hatch's plot into the finale. I guess I'll have to wait and see like everyone else. Can't wait to see what happens, even if I have to wait an extra year or whenever the boxed set is released.

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I cringe in pain as I struggle to think of what show Sci-Fi will come up with to try and replace it.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I think the "final five" is another ruse. But, we'll see.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
The show could have gone on for several more years if only they would have made better choices in stories and story arcs. It really is a GD shame that this show had to be driving so hard, so poorly, and ultimately crashed due to poor ratings.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I dont think it went down, i enjoyed the season 3 as much as i enjoyed 1 or 2. I was just hoping for some more space battles and especially more vessels.
Additionally, what kind of plot holes are you referring to, Ragnarok ? |

Anything more than five seasons and the show would've started to get stale.

....Maybe they'll bring back Space above and beyond......

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Who were the 5? I stopped paying for cable about january and this, some of the FX shows and south park are all I really miss...
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Rumor has it that the Sci-Fi channel might be investigating a possible remake of the old 80's Buck Rogers series. I ask you, do we really need a remake of another crappy old TV show?
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Look at all the great Sci-Fi shows that have come along in the last few years only to be killed off before their time. Firefly (IMHO one of the best), Threshold (Inventive and enjoyable), the 4400, Surface, The Deep, etc. With the end of Stargate and BSG the only two shows left that are worth watching are LOST and Stargate Atlantis. I hate Hero's and Doctor Who, but if you like them then you have them to watch as well.. *shudder and gage*

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
hmm well I enjoyed BSG but it sort of lost me awhile back. It's not that I'm not interested but a friend gives me the episodes and after the last lot I simply don't feel like bothering him for the rest. It's not them it's me, to use a cliche. I am just not into the way they frame the show. An entire episode about a boxing match? yeah I know it's meant to be representative of something and a vehicle for character interaction but I just plain think boxing is for idiots, sorry. Keep in mind I studied Martial arts for years. Boxing is not a martial art, it's 2 people slowly giving each other brain damage/parkinsons disease (yes, I don't understand why Cassius Clay is so popular). I'll be interested to see how things work out.
Now for my opinion on the other shows mentioned, and again I apologise if people disagree, no problem, it doesn't bother me people like things I find inexplicable. Firefly: I have seen one episode I sort of liked, and that's because it had a giant Alliance battleship, but the twin problems of space travel mixed with cowboy stuff is silly. Both by themselves are ok, not that I am really interested in cowboy stuff seeing as I'm not american, but gunslingers in brown trenchcoats in space http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif. The second problem is the intro. Clearly they got their astronomical terms mixed up which sort of lost me just as I was learning what it was. I don't know the others except perhaps 4400 which if I remember the guy from the future is about to warn them of something when some idiot shoots him. I love Heroes, and have been a Dr Who fan my entire life, although I must admit I find the behaviour of the latest Doctors somewhat grating. The first new one wasn't so bad, but the latest one "Marvellous!" oh, shut the $@%@ up. |

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
And let's be honest, Stargate hasn't been the same show for about 4 seasons. It isn't what it originally was. I watch Atlantis, but it is pretty much a "how can we make fun of McKay this week?" kind of thing, which I enjoy, but hardly memorable.
Never got into Lost. Heroes is fun. Watched 2 whole episodes of Firefly and decided it wouldn't make it (and I was right not to invest my time). Space: Above and Beyond was a fun show. Tried to watch 4400, couldn't get into it. |

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
nice site. Maybe I should try writing for it. It's bitter in ways I couldn't bring myself to be http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Lost is a prime example of something I learnt. No matter how much you love a show never forget in a year or two you may want nothing to do with it. There is always the possibility circumstances may change. I always watched Lost in it's first year. Come the second year I sat down to watch it again. My enthusiasm lasted 5 minutes. They introduced some woman I hated on sight. Later on she shoots and kills one of the main characters. I switched off and avoided it ever since. I hear now, what, she got killed? I don't care. Now I see ads about some new woman who's been there all along but of course on a deserted island after a few weeks/months no one has seen her before, and I don't mean the others I mean someone who was apparently on the plane. But of course now she is important to the plot she is retconned into the series. Please http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Disclaimer: it occurrs to me my bitterness is perhaps through some feeling of betrayal I may feel. Sort of, I guess, how you have a girlfriend or wife you love but after the breakup/divorce you despise her. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Let me get this strait now, you don't like cowboys in space, but you do like a phone booth time traveler?
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I have seen the entire Space Above and Beyond series and I have to say that it really left me feeling stupid for having wasted my time watching it. Not because it was a bad series, but because it was so horribly underfunded and poorly written.
Firefly, either you got it or you didn't. No shame in not liking one of the best Sci-Fi shows to ever hit the air waves. Besides it was good enough to piss off George Lucas, who in turn had some involvement in getting it canceled. To much like Han Solo I guess. |

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I liked Space above and beyond. Pity it went out with such a SNAFU. But as Narf can tell you I hold little sympathy for aliens, even if they are guarding some sort of nest planet.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Some clarification: BSG is ending after season 4 because the writers/producers of the show knew that the story needed only one or two seasons to finish when season 3 ended, and after working on season 4 a bit more, realized that it is closer to 1 than 2. If they stretched it out longer, it would become pretty crappy. See Stargate after season 7 (when the amount of crap they made up to keep the story going caught up to the writers), or Babylon 5 season 5 (where most of the story that would have been there was stuffed into season 4 because everyone thought it would be the last season).
Heroes is good. I... ahem... borrowed the episodes from... many anonymous friends. I doubt if Kring et. al. can keep it going for more than three or four seasons though. Other than that, I haven't had much to do with TV in a long time. Whatever is there and worth watching I can usually just wait for the DVD, and skip all the ads and waiting a week or more between episodes. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I've said enough without voicing my opinions, good or bad, about B5, however I feel I must explain something I find ironically funny.
At some point Sheridan leads a fleet of aliens to attack Earth (I won't go into my views on THAT). Ivanova is lying injured or something back at B5. Malcolm, or what's his name, the Ranger guy, is in love with Ivanova so he goes back to B5 and uses an alien device to heal her, killing himself in the process. I find this humorously ironic, if that is indeed the right description. Ivanova is healed but the actress decides not to come back for the next season. Ha, I'm sorry I mean hahahaha. They kill off a character I actually quite liked to save one of the main characters and that character isn't even in the show after that. mwuhahaha. It makes me laugh just explaining it. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
To Will,
Basically what they are saying is that they know they have written themselves out of a job. They took the wrong path with the stories they elected to use and that path lead to lower over all ratings, a dwindling fan base, and a fast track to cancellation. While Sci-Fi channel never came out and said it, the buzz has been quite firm about what they intended to do. While we get to enjoy another 22 episodes of what was one of the best sci-fi shows on the air, many of us will be relieved when the story is finally told. I am sure there will be mini-series and such in the future for the show unless they write themselves into a complete corner. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
They never meant for it to be a long drawn out series, but for one with a definite beginning, middle, and end planned out. Granted, seasons two and three had a lot of mediocre exposition in it, and the series probably would have been better if it was a three-part series plus the intro miniseries. I don't think there was anything that could have been done to extend the story any farther, though. Unless you want even more mediocre crap filling in between the character development and main plot points.
Besides, after revealing four of the final five this past season, there ain't much they can do to top that. If that ain't jumping the shark, I don't know what is. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I think it's good they are ending BSg now, because in all reality, the show's story was rushed in many aspects. Season one didn't finish wrapping up until just before Pegasus and Pegasus should've had her own story arc with galactica for season 2 and part of 3. But they rushed it and eventually destroyed pegasus in the name of the cylon set. New Caprica's rise and fall and exodus could've been handled differently and better than a meaningless iraq/vichy france allegory. And the mess that was season 3.. Let's say a lot of work was needed.
I know it wasn't meant to be a drawn out show, but I think they could've spent more time of a longer arc for different themes of the show. However, it ending now is better for the series, because it will be revisited again and again. As for other shows, I personally enjoy Heroes. It's got a wide variety of characters and stories. I also like Kring's plan for the series which is basically that every season will showcase a different cast of characters with a different plot. Naturally, the fan favorites will show up. Characters like sylar, hiro, and such but the show will be different each season. unlike 24 which has played the same song for 6 seasons. Space Above and Beyond. Yawn. Why do we need to fight space Nazis again and again and again. I thought WW2 was over. Firefly was a great show. It and a few others brought scifi TV into it's current incarnation and while few will give it that credit, I think history will smile upon it in 10 years and give it a great restart. I could never get into Lost. plus the show lost all credibility when they started introducing people on the island who were there the whole time. The show went Gillian after that point for me. Now 4400, Lost, Surface, Threshold, Invasion, etc. I couldn't stand any of them for too long. Threshold I refused to watch simply because that pervert Brannon Braga created it (as far as I'm concerned - he killed trek). The rest came off as trying to pull the x-files effect. Doctor Who, I grew up watching it in reruns and thought it was the most retarded thing I ever saw, but it was a fun romp. The new series with chris eccelson (misspelled) was a lot of fun and the doctor after him is okay, but the series is still fun. I look forward to their spinoff Torchwood. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I can catagorically state that Torchwood is awful.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
You guys really should consider Lost. In my opinion its pretty much the best series i have seen, apart from Babylon 5. The "Others" being there the entire time makes sense, if you watch further that is.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
When Lost first came on, I watched it for maybe a season and a half. I lost interest for the same reason that my desire to watch Battlestar Galactica waned: Lack of melody.
Each episode introduced a new sine wave to the overall hum of the plot, a new instrument playing, a new ball tossed into the air. But these many braids did not weave together a beautiful and coherent tapestry; what should have become a grand orchestra became a cacephony of introductions, each coming on stage, and then fading into the din of possibilities for later. So I listened to the flute one minute, then the violin, then the electric guitar, but as each took the stage the rest stopped playing. And the hope that they would present together a beautiful melody was lost to the ravages of time. |

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I like LOST. I find it interesting in a MYTH kind of way.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Poetic.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
i found space and beyond to be very interesting the first half of the season. "They" wiped out a colony. Well who are they? what do They know? Who even are they? How do we match up? I thought that was half way realistic if we ever meet others in space, reminds me of the 1st time I played SEIV

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
The thing that hurt EOaB was their budget. They had the acting skills, the stories were weak but again that was do to budge constraints.
The series that I would have liked to have seen a full five years of was Crusaders. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Crusaders or Crusade ?
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Crusade was cut down by TNT who wanted to avoid Babylon 5 happening again, instead they wanted a more accessible, easy to understand, show that featured the captain getting the babe every evening.
That defines what happened to Andromeda, ironically. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Hey, AT, what's wrong with a time booth time traveler? I admid I wasn't too interested in the original show when I was a kid (with half hour episdoes and never finding a consistent time to watch it), but when they started showing the complete episdoes, that got my attention and my viewing time. I liked the first new Doctor on this new show, but not being to watch the show now and not being able to buy the dvd sets, I'll pass judgement for now.
I missed the first season of Lost, and was getting into the second season when American Idol happened that year and I couldn't watch the last few episdoes. now I have no interest in the show. I loved Heroes, but d&#n NBC wouldn't reschedule the show against 24, and Jack Bauer won out. I'm planning on buying the dvd set of Heroes when it comes out, hopefully this summer. And I hope that BSG is worth the wait, as I'll have to wait for the dvd set also. |

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
they needed more space warfare. The old series had continuous fighting against the cylons. This one sort of turned into a soap opera. Space battles make the show. Not who dunnit, who is it and so on. IMHO,, they could have had more space battles that would have helped the ratings.. oh well, who ever said the producers were fan smart... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I'll admit I mostly like battlescenes and am not that interested in Drama. I like DS9 for the war and it was quite annoying when the final battle was mostly just old footage edited together. I expected they'd at least make an effort to get some new space fighting. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Apparently, space battles are very costly. Even movie ones.
|
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
I've heard that. Some programs that do well apparently get shut down because the beancounters believe the ratings aren't worth the cost of an epsiode. Wasn't that the problem with Firefly? Despite Joss Whedon being my cousin, sort of (didn't you ever wonder what the W stood for http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif),I only looked at one epsiode, which I liked because it had a giant Alliance battleship in it.

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
Firefly was a great series while it lasted, It seems that the powers that be just can't stand it when a good Sci Fi show becomes popular.. They always ax it..there are a few exceptions to that rule.. but it appears they just don't like good sci fi series. If you do a space sci fi series, common sense tells you it has to have space battles or some type of action just like good old fashion shoot em up westerns. With computer Tech today, it should be a lot easier then it was many years ago.. it also seems that as a sci fi series becomes popular, they go and change writers, producers, directors or whatever and that usually is the downfall... oh well....

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
It started on Fox, I can only surmise the reason why it was canceled was because it wasn't raunchy enough http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
As for the technology in production, from everything I've seen, production costs have gone up because of computers. Yes, it means faster turn around meaning shorter shooting schedules (always good), but you're paying a company to produce CGI artwork at top dollar. This is why most CGI shops in holly fold right after their show/movie they worked on is killed. They over charge. Foundation imagining, for example, died with the cancellation of Enterprise. Square Pictures folded after their disastrous Final Fantasy: The spirits within movie (they spent 200million on the film, and then made the studio only a tenth of that back leading to the near bankruptcy of Squaresoft). on the flip side, ILM is almost all cgi work these days, but they are good at what they do so they stay in business. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season

Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
To quote ron moore about the final season "...I don't care, I have my 4th season pickup!"
I think I'll watch something else and get the DVD. |
Re: OT: Battlestar Galactica Final Season
AICN has a Razor mini-episode.
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34577 Not that I mean to ruin it for anyone but it includes the Centurion between the original series and the new one. I took some screencaps I meant to upload to the BSG wiki but it seems you have to sign up to edit and I can't be bothered. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...razorcent1.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...razorcent2.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...razorcent3.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...Razorcent4.jpg The pictures themselves tell a bit of the story so they're the best I can get that aren't fuzzy, or in the end smashed up. |
