Life as a superpower...
[ Just some silliness below...]
So in my current game as a Benevolent Superpower (Mega-Evil *off*, but I'm generally exercising restraint, and am subsidizing client states. Victory conditions set to something like 2 years of peace.), other known non-neutral races are the Ukra-Tal, the Klingons, the Jraenor, the Segretti, and the Phong. The Uktra-Tal and the Phong are my allies -- both Brotherly, both periodically asking for full partnerships (which I'm loathe to accept, because when they see my full holdings the jealousy factor may skyrocket) and both, to my annoyance, nominally at war with each other. The Uktra-Tal in particular have benefited quite a bit from considerable gifts in technology and resources from my peace-loving, kind-hearted, and incredibly heavily-armed people. The Klingons are subjugated; they used to drop by my space every once in a while until I ordered the construction of mines and minelayers and hired a minister to handle such their use... but, for now, they appear to be under control. The Jraenor are allies, but rather angry ones. Aside from their quarrel with the very recently subjugated Klingons, they appear to be quite calm. Oh, and several of their warships are on an extended tour throughout my space, escorted by volunteers from my own navy who can show 'em around. That leaves the xenophobic Segretti, who have repeatedly tried to attack my outlying worlds -- while they still had a fleet; it appears that they may not have a fleet anymore, as my spies now report failure when trying to convince crews to defect, whereas once they were reliable... It's basically an undeclared war exacerbated by their stubborness. But in any event, through no particular fault of my own *cough* a Segretti world that appeared to be well-positioned as a staging base for them had its government overthrown, after numerous attempts and a strange amount of message traffic from my worlds *cough*... But it promptly declared its independence and cheerfully ignored my heavily-armed fleet that was, er, just protecting a formerly Segretti construction base that had for some inexplicable reason joined me, and just might have been ever-so-irritatingly-slowly working on an Invader-class ground-assault battleship. The message traffic continues, and the new faction proves highly unstable, as yet another revolt occurs on that world... and forms ANOTHER faction, which again asserts its independence and continues the obnoxious Segretti tradition of insulting my people. Then due to a most unfortunate accident, an order must have been mistakenly sent which resulted in the colony being annihilated. Must have been some bit flips in the message traffic, I'm afraid. Hopefully the next Segretti colony to be visited will avail itself of my protection. *sigh* http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ------------------ -- The thing that goes bump in the night |
Re: Life as a superpower...
Hehehe...
It seems that your empire is very accident prone. Why don't you nuke the Sergetti for insulting your people like that... |
Re: Life as a superpower...
As a fellow "Super Power," how do you turn off the Mega Evil empire setting?
Not much of an AI guy, but with some basic instructions, I can do most anything. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Oh ya, how do you set it so the AI will use Base Ships? ------------------ "We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats! Atrocities,
I believe you have to edit a line in settings.txt that says something like MEE=True and set it to False. Or just up the points limit from 500 to 800 or so. Note however that with default settings you do not automatically become MEE at 500, in my current game I am at 650 and still have alliances with several AI players. This is because in addition to passing the 500 level your score must also be (I think http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif175 % of the 2nd ranked player...and in my game I am barely in first place. Woohoo! I finally posted something useful in stead of bugging people here with questions ! |

Re: Life as a superpower...
ISTR that the line is "AI Uses Mega-Evil Empire" in settings.txt. And yes, you can tweak both the absolute threshold (number of points required to qualify) and the relative threshold (ratio to second-place player)...
...OTOH, maybe a better approach is to tweak the happiness files? If MEE is still used, *but* the happiness shift is reduced, then you may be able to maintain alliances with br^H^Hforeign aid. Not sure if that will work, 'tho. ------------------ -- The thing that goes bump in the night |
Re: Life as a superpower...
You can edit the AI data files(*empire*_AI_happiness.txt) so that they will not become very angry with you or you can even make it so that they will like you.

Then you could have empires that sucked-up to the MEE. I like. ------------------ Assume you have a 1kg squirrel E=mc^2 E=1kg(3x10^8m/s)^2=9x10^16J which, if I'm not mistaken, is equivilent to roughly a 50 megaton nuclear bomb. Fear the squirrel. |
Re: Life as a superpower...
Thats a thought... make some empires that placate the MEE instead of fight it
Make an interesting addition |
Re: Life as a superpower...
More fun:
The Phong and the Ukra-Tal made peace, no doubt tired of getting a stream of such Messages from my diplomatic corps for several years. Said peace Lasted for approximately 0.2 years until war was declared again between them. Perhaps I need to subsidize the weaker Phong to deter the Ukra-Tal, and to station some warships, complete with Heavily Armed Ambassadors, by their homeworld as observers. *sigh* Or if they had a common enemy, perhaps they would set aside their differences. The Sergetti may be getting worried, because they managed to go for an alliance with the my nominal allies the Jraenor. The Jraenor need to be watched carefully. In the meantime, the Segretti nation appears to be politically unstable as colonies revolt every so often, usually declaring themselves as free states. Two in one system revolted; one elected to join me and was welcomed accordingly, while the other chose independence -- but was promptly blockaded and cruelly attacked by a Segretti warship. Rather than condone the massacre of largely helpless millions, a nearby fleet of mine intervened, destroying the warship and landing Heavily-Armed Ambassadors of Friendship and Fun to help restore order to the hapless colony. After a brief but intense negotiation between the Ambassadors and roving bands of 'militia' -- led by the same misguided folks who apparently believed they could hold off the Segretti alone -- with minimal losses among the Ambassadors or civillians -- the Ambassadors persuaded the locals to join my empire, and are now under my complete protection. My engineers have promptly set about restoring and improving the local infrastructure. In domestic matters, a couple of Grand Projects have begun. First, two teams of mobile shipyards have begun construction of Dyson spheres, and a third team is being assembled. And second, an Armada is being formed. Much of the support ships -- repair, construction, minesweeping and medical -- and lighter combat vessels -- Battlecruisers and below -- have already been constructed and are undergoing the standard thorough training in individual and fleet tactics, while construction has begun on a dozen Janus-class battleships, each of which has the technology to open a gate up to 500 light-years out, or to close a similar gate. This Armada will therefore have extreme mobility, drastically increasing the amount of protection offered to even outlying member worlds against such disparate problems as invaders, rioters, or plagues. It is still unclear when peace will be brought to the quadrant, but a fair bit of the galaxy is, at least, safe for now under my aegis. ------------------ -- The thing that goes bump in the night |
Re: Life as a superpower...
On a historical note, the Pax Romana was the longest period of peace in recorded history, and the Pax Britannica was the second-longest.
Both of those were enforced through ruthless application of overwhelming military might. Peace, through superior firepower. Not only does it work, it is apparently the only thing that works. So your game is not at all that inaccurate http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Life as a superpower...
Would you consider me to be a superpower in my game?
I securely control five systems, only two with habitable planets, in a galaxy of about 150 systems. Every other race has declared war on me, mostly due to rampant intel among the AI (my intel defense is flawless, and has not failed even once) All planets in my systems are colonized and Terraformed. I currently make 200k in profit every turn, with 200k storage available. I have 1000+ mines on each WP in my backyard, and ships stationed on the WPs the enter my home system. I have won (or stalemated) every battle I've fought in the Last few decades. I have 6 $100,000 DNs cruising my system, 6 $25,000 BCs and a huge stack of about 20 $10,000 LCs undergoing retrofits. My DNs can beat odds of 5:1 consistently http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif. I also have 7 Dyson Spheres planned for the next decade.
